Corona 19 re-proliferation economic uncertainty ↑... corporate investment'red light'
-Reporter Moon Hong-cheol

As economic uncertainty, such as the re-proliferation of Corona 19, increased, a red light was lit on corporate investment.

The Korea Economic Research Institute commissioned Mono Research, a polling agency, to survey '2021 investment plans' (100 respondents) targeting 500 companies with sales, and as a result, most of the respondents have not yet established an investment plan for this year or last year. They answered that they would reduce investment compared to. Satisfaction with the domestic investment environment was also low, indicating that companies' efforts to improve the investment environment were urgently needed.

It is estimated that 58.0% of the top 500 companies with sales do not have an investment plan this year or will reduce their investment this year. Specifically, it is △ 28.0% of investment plan undecided △ 20.0% of no investment plan △ 10.0% of investment reduction from last year.

21.0% of companies responded that they would invest at the same level as last year, and 21.0% of companies responded that they would increase their investment from last year.

Han Kyung-yeon predicted that the majority of the top 500 companies cut their investments last year, but it is highly probable that this trend will occur again this year. However, it is expected that the total investment amount will increase or decrease depending on the amount of distraction to some large companies such as Samsung Electronics.

Companies cited △49.3% of economic uncertainty such as corona re-proliferation, △21.5% of major projects ending △15.2% of lack of investment capacity due to deteriorating management. 14.0% of respondents said they would not increase investment for institutional reasons, such as corporate-related legislation or reduced investment incentives.

Companies that responded that they plan to increase investment compared to last year suggested △47.6% to enter new businesses and △19.0% to improve old facilities.

Satisfaction with the domestic investment environment was only 45.5 out of 100, indicating that companies generally evaluate the domestic investment environment negatively.

The proportion of companies that evaluated the domestic investment environment negatively was 28.0%, which was about 2.5 times more than the proportion of companies that evaluated positively, 11.0%.

As policies that the government or the National Assembly should pursue to revitalize investment, they cited △deregulation 47.0% △financial support 43.0% △tax support 41.0%.

Major regulations that hinder investment were △local government licensing and deliberation regulations 23.6% △environmental regulations 18.0% △employment and labor regulations 18.0% △operation restrictions 16.2%.

On the other hand, 69.0% of respondents operate factories abroad, and the regions where overseas factories are located were in the order of △Southeast Asia (29.6%) △China (23.2%) △North America (20.0%).

75.4% of companies operating overseas factories answered that they will maintain or expand the amount of overseas investment this year at the level of last year. This is 1.8 times higher than 42.0% of respondents that the scale of domestic investment will be maintained or expanded to last year's level.

For overseas investment reasons, targeting the local market was the most at 67.1%, followed by △low labor costs 17.7% △low regulatory burden 6.3%.

"Even though exports and industrial production are showing signs of recovery recently, companies are still unable to aggressively expand their domestic investment." Institutional support for vitalization is more important than ever.”
