Disclosure of list of victims in Itaewon and suspension of priests

The taller the steeple of the church and the more splendid the temple building, the further away religion is from the truth of this society.

-Lee Jong-chul, senior researcher at the Institute of Humanities at Yonsei University

After the Itaewon disaster, the country is again extremely divided. It feels like the bad experience after the Sewol ferry disaster is repeating itself. One side is crying out for the truth, while the other side is trying to cover it up and forget it anyway. I have seen such incidents many times during the Sewol Ferry accident in the past, but I don't think it's an empty story to say that history repeats itself.

Two issues have recently come to the fore in relation to the Itaewon disaster. One is the issue of disclosing the list of victims, and the other is the issue surrounding the words of religious figures who wished that the plane on which President Yoon Seok-yeol was riding crashed. If we remember the long conflicts we experienced in the process of healing the Sewol ferry disaster, it is highly likely that these problems will continue to repeat in the future. The disclosure of the list of victims was made public through the online newspaper Dandelion. Regarding the disclosure of this list, the so-called progressive Hankyoreh and Kyunghyang Shinmun are also in the position that it is impossible without the consent of the victim's family. The reason the opposing side put forward is the privacy of the victims and their families. Considering the position of the victim's family a little more, it can be hard to remember the sorrow of losing a loved one. But can these reasons be absolute?

From the moment the disaster occurred, attempts have been made constantly to dilute the incident, distort its essence, and evade responsibility. So far, no high-ranking public official has ever seen a person resigned with responsibility. The Prime Minister made foreign reporters stunned by laughing and joking at a foreign press conference. I will take responsibility" and directed a comedy. There is not a single public official who says he is responsible and has written his resignation. It has not changed at all since the Sewol ferry disaster in the past. This incident occurred because the state did not play its role even though it could have been sufficiently predicted and prevented. Who could have predicted that hundreds of young people could be killed and injured in the middle of a big city, even though there were no wars or terrorism? In that sense, anyone can know that this disaster occurred when the state did not fulfill its responsibility to protect the lives and property of its people. As it emerged during the investigation, it is being revealed that the people in charge did not actively respond despite the frequent warnings and requests for rescue at the scene. Therefore, to see the victim of this case as a party to a simple accidental death is tantamount to distorting the essence of the case. This kind of distortion is also confirmed in the fact that no portraits or names of the victims are displayed in the space where the victims are commemorated, and banners that read "Memorial for the dead" are hung. After all, these are just attempts by the government to neuter and anonymize cases in order to somehow escape their responsibilities. Opposing the disclosure of the list can only be seen as an extension of that attitude.

Internet newspaper <Dandelion> risked such burden to reveal the list. So, right now, there are accusations that the privacy of the victims' families has been violated and that they have inflicted secondary damage. Is the release of the names the same as sprinkling salt on the wounds of the victim's family? However, whether or not privacy is an issue here should be carefully judged from a broader perspective. Protecting individuals from the eyes of society unconditionally is not the only skill. The Itaewon disaster is a public incident that occurred when the state failed to play its role in a thoroughly public space. Therefore, the process of identifying the cause of this problem and asking for responsibility must be conducted publicly and openly. Privacy protection can be absolute if it is a private thought and private problem, but privacy protection cannot be absolutely prioritized if it is a public thought and public problem. The same can be true for families of victims who have lost their loved ones. Nevertheless, it is impossible to know even the list of victims and leave it to the government, which is responsible. Would a small internet newspaper have stepped up, and the priests of the Catholic Priests' Association for the Realization of Justice would have called out the names of the victims and comforted their souls? The public process of identifying the cause and asking for responsibility can be said to be the natural right of the deceased. Of course, it would not be appropriate to talk about such a right to the dead, but if you think about the true meaning of the word, you should do it. In that sense, I believe that disclosing the list of victims is a legitimate and honorable thing. Nevertheless, Jeong Jin-seok, representative of <People's Power>, misleads the list as a political conspiracy theory, saying that the disclosure of the list was to protect Lee Jae-myung, the representative of the <Democratic Party>, and Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon said that it was taking the secondary coordinates of the victims and that they could hold legal responsibility. threatening in some way. Such a social problem comes with a very self-evident answer when considering the motive for why such an action is taken and the interests of what kind of reflective benefit arises from it.

Next, Catholics, Anglicans, and some Catholic priests said that they wished that President Yoon's plane would crash. Are their words really loud enough to be criticized? Is the denomination to which they belong justified enough to hold them accountable? Of course, due to the nature of religious people who must respect the value of life above all else, remarks about death can be interpreted as departing from the essence of religion and religious people. However, this universal problem must be taken into account in more specific situations and contexts. Even if they are condemned by the spirit and conscience of Orthodoxy, it is because the general purpose and the concrete situation can conflict. This is because emphasizing universality without specificity can lead to hypocrisy. Religious people seeing injustice and mobs, being angry and fighting against them cannot be condemned as promoting violence and glorifying death. Jesus was justified in his anger and accusations against the hypocritical scribes and Pharisees in the temple, calling them "you offspring of vipers." Rather, the problem could be not being able to get angry when you should be angry, but Jesus showed it with his whole body. Von Hoeffer, a German priest under Hitler, was active in the group that planned the assassination of Hitler and disappeared in the dew of the execution ground. In the light of universal standards, one might criticize how the clergy could act to take life. However, the devil Hitler caused World War II and drove countless lives to the battlefield and took the lives of millions of Jews from the gas chambers. It can be said that the act of talking about the dignity of life itself is deceptive and hypocritical. Bonhoeffer said that when a madman drives a car at full speed, he should take the steering wheel rather than attend the funeral of the person who died as a result. Likewise, Anglican and Catholic priests were angry with President Yoon with that mindset, and even talked about the plane crash, albeit somewhat extreme. The denomination itself is rather hypocritical for being honest while talking about the dignity of the priest as if he had reached the conclusion without understanding the context. If it is not the official opinion of the denomination, can't we just dismiss it as a priest's personal problem? It is never of the nature to ask for public responsibility. A Pastor like So-and-so does all sorts of depravity at the Gwanghwamun intersection, but no denomination takes issue with it. Why are there so many double standards? No matter how many churches there are in Korea and how many people believe in Christianity, they do not contribute much to the purification of this society because religious people do not play their roles and voices.

Even if he admits that point, it is possible to complain that President Yoon's actions can be put on the same level as Hitler and other villains. Quite a few people have already been concerned about and criticizing President Yoon's presidency. He became the prosecutor general through a high-speed promotion from an ordinary prosecutor, and became president with the greedy support of the conservative groups of the land while going through the motherland crisis. In order to become the owner of a local supermarket, a lot of experience and wisdom are needed, much less how the president of a country can play the role of president without any administrative or political experience. It's not like it's not, public opinion support for the president who has been in power for less than 6 months is running at the lowest, and there is nothing good to see, but only major incidents have occurred several times in the meantime. Given the current trend, it is difficult to rule out the possibility of destroying the country that has been dragged in with difficulty. If you come to power, of course, you will manage the divided public sentiment, revive the people's livelihood and economy that have been ruined through the two years of Corona, think about how to navigate the course of the Republic of Korea in the midst of a fierce battle for supremacy between the United States and China, and on the Korean Peninsula, where North Korea risks are high. Even Samcheok dongja can understand how to make efforts to solve inter-Korean relations well. However, as soon as he came to power, he said that he would relocate the presidential office, which has been used by past presidents, to Yongsan, and he got the wrong button right from the start. There is nothing to do with a government like Taesan from the beginning of its administration, and it is absurd to hear that there are rumors that a strange guru's words like Cheon Gong worked behind it. Already, even in the media of the conservative camp, the sound of criticism is coming out, talking about the 'butterfly effect' before the office of the president. In such a state, countless young people suffered misery, and as pointed out above, how can you not be angry if you are a conscientious religious person at the way this government distorts the nature of the incident, anonymizes it, and responds irresponsibly? I think the plane crash rhyme is also an extension of that line. It is truly hypocritical to talk about religion while ignoring the specific context and situation. In Korea, the hypocrisy of religious people is sky-high. It is the behavior of the majority of religions in this land to be bright about all kinds of interests and to promote public instinct and greed, while talking about the truth and love in words. As church steeples become taller and temple buildings become more splendid, religion only increases the distance from the truth in this society.

Therefore, for these several reasons, I demand that the list of victims be made public, and I urge the Anglican Church and the Catholic Church to reflect on their suspension, citing responsibility for their remarks. jogel4u@outlook.com
