Journalists are reporters, not 'cheerleaders' or 'pet dogs'!

“You can’t even become a ‘minister’ of the owner. We urge some 'deviant reporters' to recover the vigilance and journalistic spirit."

-Kim Keyman, co-representative of the Bareun Press Association

1. It is shocking that reporter A of a broadcasting company exclaimed "Fighting the President" at the end of a question at a briefing meeting (door stepping) on the way to work for the president on August 8th. Some people even responded, "Isn't it fake news?" In 2019, during a press conference for US President Donald Trump's visit to South Korea, he was asked, "Do you trust our country's President Moon Jae-in?"

I would like to ask what the broadcasting company thinks about the deviation of this reporter who lost his basic attitude of 'strict neutrality' and 'unfairness'. A foreign correspondent pointed out on August 8, "It is embarrassing to see some reporters crouching at the feet of the president like cheerleaders."

2. Presidential Office Correspondents The words and actions of some reporters have been on the cutting board many times over the years.

It is known that some reporters cheered when Kim Kun-hee appeared on the plane at the end of June when the president and his wife attended the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) summit.

It is natural for a journalist to have a political party or political party to support. However, it is common knowledge in the media that it is taboo to make statements that reveal this at the interview site. It is worrying that reporters keep breaking this common sense.

3. The media outlets function to increase the efficiency and convenience of coverage, such as joint coverage, and to reduce unnecessary confusion (simultaneous reporting of economic figures, embargo for arresting criminals, etc.).

However, it is a very self-evident fact that reporters are not on the side of the entrance or exit.

Nevertheless, it has become increasingly common for reporters to speak and act as one with the source or cooperate with unreasonable requests from the source.

This behavior appears to be a bad practice of not asking questions, especially during press conferences.

At the time of Kim Gun-hee's '(career manipulation) apology press conference' on December 26 last year, which was even criticized as a 'new wave comedy', the People's Power reporters sent him back without asking a single question. Considering how many questions people must have had, I think that this kind of 'group silence' by reporters who should have asked on behalf of the people is not just a violation of professional spirit or cowardice, but rather a 'sin'. Some media even praised his style, such as fashion and makeup. There was also a report that "a fan club was formed after the conference".

On October 26, 2016, President Park Geun-hye held a press conference to apologize for Choi Soon-sil National Nongdan. Journalists whose job is to ask did not ask. This is in contrast to the fact that 'a certain broadcasting company' made a fuss in an exclusive interview right after he took office, saying, "Aura like 100 fluorescent lamps combined."

The appearance of 'Korean reporters who don't ask questions' is not unfamiliar. On November 12, 2019, while visiting Korea, US President Barack Obama said at a press conference, "This time, I will give Korean reporters a chance to ask questions." However, none of the Korean reporters asked a question. President Obama shouted "Korean Press" many times, but there were no questions in the end, and the right to ask questions went to a Chinese reporter. Among some people, there was a smirk and lamentation, saying, "Korean reporters are stinky?"

4. Going back, on September 30, 1999, when the president (then) of the daily newspaper arrived at the Seoul District Prosecutors' Office to be investigated for tax evasion and embezzlement, many reporters from the newspaper who were lined up shouted, "Chief, cheer up." bought a blank Roughly speaking, it was like seeing off the gangster boss. This was one of the scenes in the dark history of the Korean press, which was nothing like the <Reporter's Death Report>, in which a reporter gave up being a reporter.

Critics of the Korean press also criticized the daily newspaper at this time. Despite the excessive protection of reporters, the newspaper president was convicted in the first trial. At this point, it is not a press, but a theory. He's not a reporter, he's just a minion.

6. Journalists are journalists. What does cheerleader mean? Being a 'pet dog' should also be strongly guarded against. In particular, being a servant or slave of the owner is the worst of the worst.

Since the press is an unchecked power, public trust is even more important. Isn't that trustless?

In this regard, the Korean media, which ranks last among the 38 member countries of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) with a news credibility in the low 20% range, is in an unprecedented crisis. The loss of professional consciousness and insensitivity to ethics among journalists are severe.

Ahn Jae-hong, a pioneering journalist, preached about 'reporter morality' like this. "As a pouisa (布衣士, a scholar wearing hemp robes), a reporter calms the affairs of the nation under the heavens, discusses the policy of longevity, and advances to the cusp of the ideology of the times". He must be true to the spirit of the times, earnestly pursue the truth, and be faithful to his work ethic.”

We ask some stray journalists who seem to have forgotten what a reporter should do for a deep reflection, drastic innovation, and brilliance.
