Jungmi Painter... Magical Metaphorical Animals

[Art Criticism] Animals such as sheep, horses, deer, etc. that appear in the work make us happy

-Kim Jong-geun, art fanatic

Animals appearing in works of art, regardless of time and age, show us interesting points. Transcending time, space, and history, humans have always cared for or revered animals in their hearts. And sometimes humans leave them as murals or objects to have magical thoughts, escape from fear, or as objects for their aspirations. Prehistoric cave paintings of Lascoe, France, or the murals of Altamira, Spain, of the countless figures of bison and animals drawn or engraved are representative evidence of this.

Even in the Greek and Roman times, there were animals that symbolized the gods, and in the medieval Renaissance, horses and sheep were embodied as a sacred symbol. In Korea, folk tales dealing with symbols and abundant animals, including the zodiac sign, are understood in the same context.

As described above, the characteristic of the work of millet is that it has an animal motif as a whole, so it shares the same flow with the origin and form of existence of the work of art.

However, the animals in Jungmi's work are not limited to simple descriptions or expressions of animals, but also contain their own unique meaning. The essential intention of such a semantic polished work is clearly revealed in the expressions and forms of horses, deer, and sheep. In its intentions, it is a case in which animals are treated as another object of empathy for humans. In particular, in the cute, adorable or decorative composition of animals, the expressions of the animals secretly indicate that they are gestures that wish for happiness.

It is majestic in horses and deer, and in the elegant expression of deer, it shows a cross section as the pinnacle of decorative beauty.

Also, the heroic crown and wings are icons that are frequently encountered in Jeongmi's works. Of course, there is also the decorative purpose of making the soul mate animal noble and splendid, but the artist pays more attention to imagining this hope as possible in reality rather than just decoration. Another work is also closely related to the image of an animal with a crown and wings on a blue horse. As such, the symbolic forms and decorations in Jeongmi's work create different patterns even when the same material is used. In terms of the type, Cheongyang is not an animal that exists only in the imagination, but an animal that lives in the Himalayas and other places. They have a “symbolic meaning of giving strong vitality and strength”.

The artist exposes the intense desire for hope and happiness in life through the shape of an animal, which is exquisitely combined with a visual painting form that draws in animals as empathy. Cats, birds, and deer appear frequently as subjects along with the blue horses and cheongyangs he worked on, and these works reveal such characteristics and attributes well. The author confessed to himself, “With the meaning of <soul mate>, I hope that everyone will communicate happily and happily by unraveling the various episodes that arise in the process of forming a relationship in a warm and pleasant way.”

In particular, the artist freely expresses these expressions with bright colors and various decorative techniques such as glass powder, gold leaf, and silver leaf. As the artist confessed that the finished painting was inspired by Carol King's song of the same name, 'You've got a friend', as the artist confessed, brightly colored leaves and flowers bloom, and the surrounding birds sing to each other. It reminds me of the beautiful lyrics, “You have a friend who will run to you whenever you feel lonely and stressed.”

This dual visual form, sometimes seen as a word or sometimes as a deer, leaves room for imagination in various forms depending on the viewer's imagination. In fact, the artist imprints the meaning and message as important through the process of inserting the word “direct message delivery” here. The artist fantastically created canvases that evoke beautiful and happy emotions with these various expressions, forms, and techniques. However, the animals are not confined solely to such a form, and in particular, they do not follow the shape of the animal as it is, but transform it to construct a magical screen.

There are also works that look like a modern version of tomb murals. It is a reinterpretation of the artist's unique sensibility and colors with the artist's imagination on the Cheonmado of Cheonmachong during the Shilla period. In fact, these works are decorated with white heavenly horses and clouds, as well as glittering patterns, adding a mysterious and fantastic impression. In the 20th century, in the paintings of Salvadro Dali, a painter of surrealism, animals are vividly depicted in imagination and surrealism. A tiger stalking a woman, an elephant connected by a large leg, a flaming giraffe, etc. come back as signs or symbols like allegory. As in the Rococo style, animals are sometimes used more decoratively than meaningfully.

Animals such as sheep, horses, and deer that appear frequently in Jeongmi's works also make us happy with Rococo decorations.

Thus, Jeongmi achieves decorative success in painting while interlocking with the metaphorical meaning of the subject in the form of animals expressed in beautiful and bright colors. This is another artistic completion that is revived in a splendid flat surface as a symbolic object of Jeongmi. critickim@naver.com
