Geonbae Park, a genius of language who has flowed through the river of history

- Lee Il-young, columnist

Sanskrit is an ancient Indian language belonging to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It is a language distinct from the Vedic language, which has much in common with the Zoroastrian Avesta language, which records the vast Veda temples of Brahminism classified in the ancient Sanskrit vid.

Deciphering Sanskrit, which was spread to many countries through Buddhist scriptures as a literary language used in religion and literature of the literate class, was a major basis for understanding the reality of Eastern culture with a long history and the flow of civilization. A lot of research has been done on this for a long time. A look at this reveals a surprising fact. It is a fact that Korean scholars exist as the most recognized scholars in India, the homeland of Sanskrit.

go back a long time On September 25, 1956, on the third page of the Dong-A Ilbo, the following article with the title (Dispatch of five Korean representatives from the World Buddhist Convention) was reported. (From the Jogye Headquarters of Korean Buddhism, Hyobong (李曉峰). Ha Dongsan (河東山). Cheongdam Monk (靑潭), monk Ilbung (一鵬), and Park Geonbae (朴建培) were to be dispatched) (See the original article in Donga Ilbo on September 25, 1956)

Then, on November 13, 1956, the Chosun Ilbo article reported (To attend the 4th Buddhist Conference in Nepal, three representatives from Korea, Ha Dong-san, Lee Cheong-dam, Lee Hyo-bong, and Park Geon-bae (interpreter) departed on a northwest flight on the afternoon of the 12th. The Buddhist conference, which will be held for a week from the 15th, is held every three years with three or four hundred representatives from 60 countries participating. This is the first time in 1300 years since the high priest Hyecho of the Silla Dynasty visited) (Refer to the original article in the Chosun Ilbo on November 13, 1956)

This is the content of the participation of three representative Korean monks and a Sanskrit scholar Park Geon-bae (朴建培) as an interpreter at the World Buddhist Congress held in Kathmandu, Nepal on November 15, 1956.

Here are some things to look out for. At that time, there was no direct route in Nepal, so monk representatives returned home through New Delhi Airport after attending the Nepal Buddhist Convention through New Delhi Airport. The problem was that at that time, Sebun returned to Korea as scheduled, but Sanskrit scholar Park Geon-bae did not return and remained in India.

On January 20, 1964, 7 years passed, the Kyunghyang Shinmun published a history that is held every three years. language. The 26th International Conference of Orientalists studying archeology was held in New Delhi, India, and reported as follows.

(The 26th International Conference of Oriental Scholars was attended by scholars from 49 countries for a week from January 4 in New Delhi, India. From Korea, historian Dr. Hong-Yeol Yoo, linguist Dr. Lee Sung-nyeong from Seoul National University, Dr. Koh Byeong-ik, from Oriental History, and Archeology Jeong-Hak Kim from Korea University The museum director, etc.)

The article that followed was surprising. (In this conference, there was a Korean professor Kun-bae Park from Pune University, India, who attended as a representative of Indian scholars as a Korean. He was a Korean who moved to India 7 years ago and is currently a professor at Pune University in India. Also, Professor Park Geon-bae said that he received a promise from the Indian government to publish three volumes of Sanskrit research literature. The only Korean scholar who majored in Sanskrit is currently Dongguk University Professor Ki-young Lee) (Original article from the Kyunghyang Shinmun, January 20, 1964) Reference)

The next day, on January 21, 1964, an even more surprising article was reported in the Chosun Ilbo. In the article written by Seoul National University linguist Dr. Soongnyeong Lee, who visited the conference, Kun-bae Park (Sanskrit), who participated as the representative scholar of India along with Hong-yeol Yoo (history), Sung-nyeong Lee (language), Byeong-ik Ko (history), and Jeong-hak Kim (archeology) as the representative of Korea, was the representative of Korea. Including 5 Korean representatives. (See the original Chosun Ilbo article on January 21, 1964)

In the history of the International Conference of Oriental Scholars, Park Geon-bae is still the only scholar who has served as the representative of both countries at the same conference. Who is Scholar Park Geon-bae? How did he become a scholar representing India, the world's second most populous country, in 7 years of his stay? Furthermore, did you become a scholar representing both India and Korea at the international scholars conference where world-class scholars gather?

Everyone who remembers the genius scholar Park Geon-bae of the times has passed away, and from what I have learned, there will be very few in Korea, including poet Ko Eun. Let's take a look next. artwww@naver.com
