[Comprehensive] ‘Decision to break up’, synergy of enchanting acting by Tang Wei X Park Hae-il..New investigative melodrama

The film that won the Best Director award at the 75th Cannes International Film Festival will be released on the 29th.

Break News Reporter Park Dong-je = The director's award-winning film <Decision to break up> at the 75th Cannes International Film Festival announced the birth of a new rhetorical melodrama that has never been seen before, and proved to be a hot topic that should not be missed in theaters this summer. [Director: Park Chan-wook | Starring: Tang Wei, Park Hae-il | Producer: Moho Film | Provided/distributed by CJ ENM]

<The Decision to Break Up>, which was first released through the preview, is an irreplaceable direction that only director Park Chan-wook can provide, fascinating acting synergy that crosses the boundaries of Tang Wei and Park Hae-il, fresh and mysterious characters, and a new and new combination of investigation and melodrama. It densely filled the running time of 138 minutes through a unique story and a unique mise-en-scène that gets immersed the more you watch it.

On the 21st, a press/distribution preview was held at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall. Director Park Chan-wook, actors Tang Wei, Park Hae-il, and others attended the press conference after the premiere, drawing attention.

<Decision to Break Up> is a film about a detective named Hae-jun (Park Hae-il), who investigates a murder case in a mountain, meets Seo-rae (Tang Wei), the wife of the deceased, and begins with suspicion and interest.

Director Park Chan-wook's 4th film to compete in the Cannes Film Festival, <Decision to Break Up>, is the first Korean film directed by Park Chan-wook in six years after <The Handmaiden>, and is raising the expectations of many people even before its release. In particular, director Park Chan-wook won the Best Director Award at the 75th Cannes International Film Festival for his film Deciding to Break Up.

In this <Decision to Break Up>, Tang Wei takes on the role of Seo-rae, the wife of the deceased, who is not easily shaken by the sudden death of her husband, and Park Hae-il takes on the role of 'Hae-jun', a detective who is suspicious and interested in Seo-rae at the same time.

On this day, director Park Chan-wook said about the 15-year-old viewing rating of <Decision to Break Up>, "Who is there who decides the rating and directs it? I wanted to do a melodrama that people who have lived through life could do, but when people around me say this, they want exposure and an unconventional part. Hearing those words, he decided to go the other way. It's a story about adults, but I thought that I had to be different from the past if I wanted to talk about subtle and hidden feelings, so I think the current <Decision to break up> was not completed."

Director Park Chan-wook continued, "I don't know what the next project will be (related to the ratings), but unlike <Decision to Break Up>, we are preparing several works with strong violence and exposure. Regarding the audience rating, what kind of work is being prepared, I think it will be different each time.”

Regarding the passionate but invisible emotional acting in <Resolving to Break Up>, Tang Wei said, "I think the way people express themselves matures as they grow up. I think he goes through the process on how to express his feelings. Seorae is a person who has experienced hardships and difficulties in life. She was in a situation where she could not express everything, so she tried to take her feelings inside. Strangely, I was surprised that the director's direction matched it well. I can't speak Korean at all, so I memorized all the lines, but I tried to express it as much as possible through facial expressions. A lot of people on set helped, and I think a good movie was made because of Park Hae-il's consideration."

In this regard, Park Hae-il said, "When I heard the director's words that I wanted to tell the story of adults through <Decision to Break Up>, I felt that I had to go that way. If you watch the movie, you can see various emotional variations, but I think the police officer, Hae-jun, did his best to give a variation of emotions in his attitude toward the deceased's wife Seo-rae."

When asked when Seo-rae thought he felt love for Hae-jun in <Resolving to Break Up>, Tang Wei said, "Isn't the feeling of love different for each age group? But as I get older, I think it's a certain moment, and the timing may be different. So I think it's different every time I see it, and I wonder if that moment will be different for each audience. I think the correct answer is what the audience feels about that moment and that space. The love that the director wanted to show through <Resolving to Break Up> is all over the place, so I think it would be fun to find it.”

About director Park Chan-wook, whom he worked with through <Resolve to Break Up>, Park Hae-il said, "Since the early 2000s, I have had short encounters with director Park Chan-wook in work and privately. As he made <Decision to Break Up>, the director gave him great support while watching me do what he did when he created vague and subtle emotions. I think I gained a lot of strength each time. And I think he learned and felt a lot while working with Tang Wei.”

Director Park Chan-wook said, "Aren't films of this kind and genre common? I think the game of stalking between a detective and a beautiful suspect has been shown a lot. That's why I think there are customs of the genre, and there are parts that the audience expects. But through <Decision to Break Up>, I wanted to entertain the audience with a different part from the expectations of the audience who had conventional thoughts, and I wanted to give a variation of emotion at the ambiguous line between rhetoric and melodrama.”

Meanwhile, the movie <Decision to break up> (director Chan-wook Park) starring Tang Wei X Park Hae-il is scheduled to be released on the 29th.
