Published ‘CENTRAL ASIA’, an author Hanshin Lee, a professional traveler from the former Soviet Union

[New book introduction] The man crazy about the old Soviet Union and Central Asia Published a new book again!

-Writer Kim Soo-jong

Writer Hanshin Lee, who has traveled the former Soviet Union (USSR) for over 25 years, is now publishing <CENTRAL ASIA> (Eiji Publishing Company), a book that tells the story of Central Asia newly discovered through a train journey of 120,000 km in Central Asia. published.

This <CENTRAL ASIA> is the 7th travelogue of writer Hanshin Lee, who is well-known as a professional traveler in the former Soviet Union (USSR). In the meantime, starting with Xinjiang Uyghur, an ancient silk road, he has traveled to Kazakhstan, a country of grasslands, which aims to stand shoulder to shoulder with developed countries by 2030.

Kyrgyzstan, a country of lakes aiming for a welfare state like Switzerland, Tajikistan in the Pamir Highlands taking a new leap after a long civil war, Uzbekistan, the center of the Silk Road, and Turkmenistan, a desert country dreaming of a second Kuwait based on gas from the Caspian Sea traveled to

It is a record containing the life of the artist, who has traveled mainly by train for the past 10 years. Xinjiang Uyghurs, China, the first place to visit Uyghurstan is an autonomous region of China that has traditionally been inhabited by Uyghurs. It has the largest area among provincial administrative regions in China and the most populous among autonomous regions.

It borders Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and India. In particular, it is also related to the Kashmir conflict with the Tibet Autonomous Region. The range of Xinjiang is in the northern part of Zungaria, Kashgar and Khotan, and in the southern part of Altishar, where Uyghurs live. The southern part, such as the Tarim Basin, has traditionally been inhabited by Uyghurs since ancient times.

Zungaria, such as the Dungar Basin and the Turpan Basin, is the territory of Mongolian nomadic peoples. It has enormous tourism resources such as ancient and medieval Silk Road ruins, an underground waterway called Karez, a point where Eastern and Western cultures coexist, delicious food, and an oasis orchard. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to communicate in English.

Foreign visitors are strictly controlled by public security and must only use designated hotels, and communication with local Uyghurs, especially young English-speaking people, has been blocked. It is a very interesting area well worth a visit if you can tolerate these inconveniences.

Ili Kazakh Autonomous Region is famous for Kazakh nomadic culture and sledding, and the regions belonging to Central Asian cultural spheres such as Kashgar in the west and Khotan in the south are nomadic regions where Islam is dominant. It is also famous as a gourmet tour area. Dried fruits are famous as a specialty, and Uyghur cuisine is also a delicacy.

China is ushering in the pro-Chinese era by tying the Xinjiang Uyghur region and Kazakhstan Khorgos region, which are trying to become independent from China with the goal of becoming an independent country called Uyghurstan. In Central Asia, the world powers are playing a power game by waging an energy war over various mineral resources, oil, and natural gas.

Kazakhstan is a country that spans Central Asia and Eastern Europe. It has land borders with Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China, and although it is a landlocked country, it is also close to Azerbaijan and Iran through the port of the world's largest lake, the Caspian Sea.

In terms of culture, the poet Jambul Javaev and the playwright Muktar Auezov can be cited. The tradition of reciting epic folk songs and lyric poems still exists in Kazakhstan. For this reason, there are many art and theater schools in Kazakhstan, and the National Art Gallery in Almaty.

Although the industry is small, it is also a country where movies are made. Since the 2010s, there are directors who make neo-realistic guerrilla films like Adilkan Erzanov, and directors invited to film festivals like Darezan Omirbaev and Sergei Dvorchey.

Among them, Dvorchey was the first Kazakhstan to compete in the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. Samal Yesla Mova, for her lead role, was the first Kazakhstan to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. If we have K-POP, here is Q-POP. It is emerging as a new powerhouse in Central Asia.

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country located in the eastern mountainous region. It is called the Switzerland of Central Asia due to its natural environment with high mountains and no deserts. The largest lake, Issyk-Kul, was famous enough to be visited by Communist Party officials as a resort during the Soviet era.

Issyk-Kul Lake is the second largest mountain lake in the world after Lake Titicaca. Under the scorching sun, the snow-capped mountain peaks visible beyond the horizon form a strange harmony, providing a wonderful scenery that cannot be seen in ordinary seas or lakes.

It contains a milder salt than the sea, so it is good for swimming and is known as an excellent medicinal water for treating skin diseases. As the only country in Central Asia to join the WTO, the country's ambition is to become a hub that lays the foundation for Central Asia's logistics.

Tajikistan has the highest fertility rate among Central Asian countries. As always, among the five Central Asian countries, the proportion in terms of national power is the smallest. Most of the country is a mountainous country covered with perennial snow on the Pamir Plateau, and political instability due to a long civil war has become a factor hindering economic development.

Uzbekistan is a dual landlocked country. Like the brilliant history of being a transit point on the Silk Road and the center of many empires, there are the most relics in Central Asia. In terms of tourism resources, the major cities of the Silk Road, such as Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, are also quite well-known.

The biggest problem that the tourism industry failed to develop was the visa issue. In order to obtain a tourist visa, an invitation letter is required, but obtaining an invitation letter was not easy. In addition, since Uzbekistan is a landlocked country, in order to enter the country by land, it is necessary to enter through another Central Asian country.

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan also required visas, and issuing visas was as difficult as Uzbekistan. The second problem is that although Samarkand is the center of tourism and transportation in Uzbekistan, it was not easy to schedule a trip because the international flight route is from Tashkent, the capital.

Since Tashkent is too far from the northeastern tip of Uzbekistan, it takes a lot of time to travel to Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. The third problem is language. It is a country where English is not spoken well. It is a country with an area twice the size of the Korean Peninsula, cheap labor, and abundant natural resources.

Turkmenistan is a country located in Central Asia. It borders the Caspian Sea and borders Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Afghanistan. This country is notorious for being extremely difficult to obtain a visa because it is a closed country as close as North Korea.

To some extent, since no country has concluded a visa-free agreement itself, people from any country in the world must obtain a visa to enter this country unconditionally. However, gas, water, local phone bills, and electricity are free, and gasoline is the cheapest country in the world, so it has its own merits.

Although there is a disadvantage that it is inconvenient to enter and exit a dictatorship country. It used to be a hermit country that was almost cut off from the outside world due to the personal worship of the president and an intense lockdown policy, but now it is slowly showing up in the international community after walking through the curtains.

Central Asia serves as a forward base for Russia to advance into Asia, and on the contrary, it is a road from Asia to Europe. But Central Asia is far from us. In such Central Asia, Hanshin Lee traveled for nearly 10 years with just a backpack.

Author Hanshin Lee, author of <CENTRAL ASIA>, is the owner of Sundaeguk Restaurant in Ahyeon-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, and has served as a USSR TRAVELLER AND AUTHOR, USSR professional traveler, CIS regional expert, Pamir Highlands expedition leader, and Silk Road expedition leader. EBS World Theme Tour 〈Walking the Pamirs. Tajikistan" appeared.

Works include <The Last Omphalos of Central Asia>, <Searching for the Hidden Treasure Caucasus>, <The Baltic States and Colored in Belarus>, <The Trans-Siberian Railway and the Baikal Amur Railway>, <The Pamir Highway, the Road to Hell>, <Ukraine, Crimea, Belarus, Moldova Kishinev>.
