South Korean manufacturing employment red light .. About 180,000 decrease in 5 years

The red light has been turned on in the Korean manufacturing industry. As a result of analyzing the trends of domestic employment in manufacturing and local employment of overseas subsidiaries for the past five years (2015-2019), domestic employment has decreased by about 180,000 compared to five years ago. This is the combined number of domestic employees of Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor, the largest companies in Korea in 2020.

Conversely, overseas employment has risen sharply (29.4%, 426,000 ↑), which is interpreted as an intensification of job outflow. In addition, compared to five years ago, Korea's share in global manufacturing production has also decreased, indicating that the ranking has been delayed in the overall global ranking.

The Federation of Korean Industries (KFA) presents major characteristics of changes in the manufacturing landscape (employment and production, etc.) in the last five years (2015-2019) of the world's six largest manufacturing countries, including China, the United States, Japan, Germany, Korea, and India, and tasks for revitalizing the domestic manufacturing industry. analyzed and published.

According to ILO statistics, the number of manufacturing employment in the United States, Japan, Germany and Korea in 2019 compared to 2015 was 3.3% (340,000), 3.3% (250,000), and 3.1% (340,000) in Japan, Germany, and the United States, respectively. 490,000), while in Korea, it decreased by 3.9% (180,000).

Manufacturing employment in Korea has been on the decline every year from 2016 to 2020. The restructuring of the shipbuilding industry and the restructuring of the automobile industry due to a sharp decline in ship orders had the greatest impact. real. According to the statistics of employment insurance subscribers of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, 74,000 people were employed in other transportation equipment, including the shipbuilding industry, and 14,000 in the automobile sector in January 2020 compared to January 2016.

The increase in manufacturing employment in the United States, Japan, and Germany is analyzed as a result of the three countries continuing to strengthen their manufacturing base and reshoring their own companies to create jobs in their home countries after the 2008 global financial crisis.

In particular, in the case of the United States, after the Obama administration enacted the 'Manufacturing Enhancement Act' in 2010, the current Biden administration's 'building supply chain resilience, revitalization of the US manufacturing industry, and broad-based growth promotion' policies have been implemented to strengthen manufacturing competitiveness. is developing

Looking at China statistics, the number of manufacturing workers in China continued to decline during the same period due to a combination of factors such as the global economic slowdown, the US-China trade dispute, the supply sector reform policy that continued until the end of 2018, and the continuous increase in wages in the manufacturing sector.

According to the overseas investment analysis report in China, the United States, Japan, and Korea, the number of local employment in Japan and the United States, which increased in 2019 compared to 2015, was 4.9% (216,000 people) and 0.2%, respectively, of overseas investment corporations in the United States. % (10,000), while the number of local employees of overseas investment corporations in Korea increased by 29.4% (426,000). During the same period, the number of local employees of overseas investment corporations in all industries in China also increased by 85.0% (1041,000 people).

Korea's share of global manufacturing production has also recently decreased. Looking at the World Manufacturing Production statistics from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the world manufacturing production's nominal output grew from $11.72 trillion in 2011 to $13.96 trillion in 2019, an average annual growth rate of 2.2%.

Among these, the share of world manufacturing production in China and India, which are positioned as the world's factories, rose by 2.1%p and 0.4%p, respectively, from 2015 as of 2019. On the other hand, the US, Germany and Korea fell 0.6%p, 0.3%p, and 0.2%p, respectively, while Japan did not change.

The reason that Korea’s share of the world’s total manufacturing production, which increased to 3.3% in 2018, fell 0.3%p in 2019 compared to the previous year, was the decrease in exports (10.4% decrease from the previous year) due to the US-China trade war in 2019 (10.4% decrease from the previous year) and contraction of new facility investment by companies. It is interpreted that there were influences such as relocation of factories abroad, and restructuring of the automobile and shipbuilding industries. As a result, Korea was overthrown by India and was pushed down one place from 5th to 6th.

Kim Bong-man, head of the FKI International Headquarters, said, “Amid the deteriorating investment conditions in the domestic manufacturing industry, the ratio of overseas investment to domestic investment (total fixed capital formation in the manufacturing industry under the Bank of Korea National Account) is increasing. He pointed out, “The government should improve the environment for key technology development and domestic investment in manufacturing so that the expansion of overseas investment by Korean manufacturing companies does not reduce domestic investment and employment.”
