Korean drama <Squid Game> is an all-time hit, the reason

I think that the game that risked your life is not a game of strength alone, but a battle of the heads.

- Poet Kim Deok-kwon

These days, the Korean drama <Squid Game> is an unprecedented hit. So I went to Netflix. Yesterday, on the 10th of October, the news reported that while trying to enter the theater to watch <Squid Game> in Paris, France, the crowd had a big fight to get in first. What is it that makes people all over the world so passionate about Korean culture?

As soon as <Squid Game> was released on Netflix, it immediately overwhelmed the US market, which can be said to be the originator of genres. As of October 1st, Netflix was ranked first in 82 countries out of 83 countries where it was serviced. It encompasses not only Asia, where the Korean Wave has been strong since the beginning, but also Europe, the Middle East, and South America.

In a word, <Squid Game> is a ‘survival game for those who are driven by debt’. It's a story about being invited to a game that risked your life, and struggle and resourcefulness unfold to become the last winner for a prize of 45.6 billion won. By combining the situation of modern people in extreme competition with the play of childhood memories, it was born as a brutal and shocking game of death.

Jo Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo), the ‘pride of Ssangmun-dong, the greatest talent of this time’, forms a double wall with the main character Seong Ki-hoon (Lee Jeong-jae) in the popular drama Squid Game. Sang-woo Cho, a gifted student who entered Seoul National University Business School, enters the Yeouido securities district and seeks to make a fortune.

A woman who runs a fish shop in the market and is the object of the envy of her friends is eventually drawn into a game where she risk her life for money. Although his life is ruined, he is proud of himself as a senior student at Seoul National University's Business School. However, he thinks that it is not his fault that he has met this situation, but because of the contradictions of capitalism.

And he believes that careful calculations and strategies are important to survive in a life-threatening game. In the first game, ‘Mugunghwa Flower is Blooming’, 255 of the 456 participants lost their lives. I was deceived by the huge prize money, but I thought that the game that risked my life wasn't just about strength, it was a head fight.

After losing the marbles game, he deceives Ali, an innocent Pakistani worker who believed in him and followed him to the end, and he survives. When he realizes that the person he trusted has deceived him, the expression of this foreigner's bewildered expression and the scene of being shot will never be erased.

It was a scene that raised the fundamental question, ‘Are humans mutually trustworthy?’ The words in the game of crossing the glass bridge well express the human attribute of ancestors. Jo Sang-woo, who said that I came this far because I tried my best, and Sung Ki-hoon, who said that we were able to win because there were losers, collide, and finally, the main characters fight in a squid game to determine the final winner.

When the two were young and lived in Ssangmun-dong, they were brothers and sisters and they were like family. However, in order to survive, he attacks the protagonist who saved him several times. I rationalize that it's not because I hate you, it's just to survive. But why did the director who directed this drama choose Jo Sang-woo as a graduate of Seoul National University?

Maybe it's because we want to ask the meaning of human resources needed in our society? In the era of unlimited competition in neoliberalism, also called Capitalism 3.0, most people with good brains, smart and specs won the competition. They justify the winner-take-all and rationalize that I deserve more because I'm smarter and smarter.

In our society, it seems that there are too many selfish people enjoying a rich life, losing consideration and compassion for those who struggle in difficult circumstances. I am reminded of the words of Talent Teacher Lee Soon-jae one day. Lee Soon-jae is a graduate of Seoul National University.

“Not long ago, I happened to go to a meeting at Seoul National University, and they told me to say one word as an elder. So he said something frankly, and the atmosphere got colder.” “What did you say?” “Looking at the news these days, both those who are being arrested and those who are being arrested are from Seoul Law University. It's like this because we gathered talented people from all over the country and gave them some education. I hate to say that I graduated from Seoul National University because I was embarrassed.”

In order to enter Seoul National University, you have to be naturally smart, you have to work hard, and you have to follow your luck. However, all of this is not his own fault. There is the merit of the parents and the virtue of the environment. Seoul National University is a national university. So there are several benefits. In fact, isn't all this the burden of the people?

So, this drama asks through Jo Sang-woo whether a smart student is a good person in the world we live in. The <Daejang-dong Incident>, which is causing a lot of scandal in the political and social circles right now, would be better to call it <Daejang-dong Game>.

Most of the people surrounding Daejang-dong are members of the Seoul National University graduates, Supreme Court justices, and lawyers from the prosecution. I feel sad because I think they are the special prosecutor and conservative media reporters. Isn't Seoul National University's urgent priority to nurture talented people who make this society warmer, not people who cling to their pursuit of wealth and power?
