Published ‘Kishinev, Moldova, Moldova, Belarus, Crimea, Ukraine’ by Lee Han-shin

If you read several books by Hanshin Lee, a professional traveler in the former Soviet Union, and take good care of them, you can easily travel to Central Asia as well as Eastern Europe and Russia.

-Writer Kim Soo-jong

Writer Hanshin Lee, who has mainly traveled to the former Soviet Union for the past 30 years, has recently published a book by collecting the materials he wrote while traveling to 'Kishinev, Moldova, Moldova, Ukraine, Crimea, Belarus,' in Eastern Europe.

In fact, even for those who studied geography hard in school, Eastern Europe is a place where it is difficult to know where it is located just by hearing its name. Perhaps only Ukrainians have heard the name. If you think about it first, it is because it is a place with a lot of rumors that the virgins there are beautiful.

As Russian jokes say, “Russian beauty is a special product of Russia”, there are many beauties in Russia and Eastern Europe. So young men seem to like Eastern Europe and Russia. Russian women are so popular that there is an American proverb that says, “Out of paradise in the world, the salary is the United States, the house is England, the food is China, and the wife is a Russian woman.”

However, in the opinion of the general public, Russia and Eastern Europe are cheap and the women are nice, but it is also true that they cannot easily access them due to the insecurity of security. However, if you read several books by Hanshin Lee and take good care of them, it will be a good reference book for traveling to Eastern Europe and Russia as well as Central Asia.

Here, as the Russian proverb says, “When alcohol disappears, friends disappear”, reading Hanshin Lee's book while drinking alcohol, and meeting him, anyone will be able to easily challenge not only Russia but also Eastern Europe.

First, Hanshin Lee visited Ukraine (Україна), a fairly large country in Eastern Europe. It borders the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the north and northwest, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary to the west, Romania and Moldova to the southwest.

Kiev, the city of art, is the capital and largest city. It is connected to the plains of Eastern Europe and has a relatively mild climate. Although the official language is Ukrainian, in reality many people use Russian on a daily basis, with half of the population speaking Russian.

So, although it is said that they gained independence from Russia, their lifestyle and customs are mostly similar to those of Russia and they can speak the language, so it is a convenient place to travel if you can speak Russian. The main cities are Kiev, Donetsk, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odessa and Zaporiza.

As Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, its administrative power is less than that of Crimea, but it is interesting that the international community generally maintains that Crimea is part of Ukraine. In fact, the countries of the former Soviet Union are very difficult to travel.

Even after independence, most of them speak Russian, and obtaining a visa is difficult and the visa cost is not too high. Travel infrastructure is also lacking. In addition, the natural environment such as the Pamir plateau and sandy desert is very rough. However, Lee Han-shin, who was born with a strong travel DNA, also walked around Eastern Europe this time.

Chapter 1 of the book arrived in Moscow on the Trans-Siberian train from Vladivostok, after arriving in Moscow by boat from Sokcho, Gangwon-do in 2009, passing through Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, the three Baltic countries, to Kaliningrad, Belarus, and Kiev, Ukraine. It is a record of 91 days of traveling by train to Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Chapter 2 enters Qingdao, China by boat from Incheon, Korea in 2011, goes through Beijing, and takes a train from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, China, which is the route between the Silk Road and Central Asia, to Almaty, Kazakhstan, and again from Almaty to Tashkent, Uzbekistan by train. I was with my wife.

Then, from Tashkent, they arrived in Moscow, Russia, and took the train again, passing through Latvia and Lithuania, the three Baltic countries, to Kaliningrad, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldavia and Moldova, the eastern regions of Romania.

At the time of the trip, Crimea, Ukraine, and in 2021, when this article was written, crossed the Kerch Strait connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov from Crimea, Russia to the Turkey Traverse by speedboat in Sochi, where the 2014 Winter Olympics were held. This is a record of 78 days of traveling from Yerevan in Armenia and Georgia in the three Caucasus countries to Almaty, Kazakhstan, after entering Bzon.

Chapter 3 arrived at the port of Vladivostok by boat from the East Sea of Gangwon-do in 2012, took the Trans-Siberian train to Moscow, and then to St. Petersburg. And the three Baltic countries, Estonia and Latvia.

It is a record of 61 days of passing through Lithuania to Kaliningrad, passing Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Crimea, then Ukraine, Belarus, and the Baltic countries, and then traveling around the Eurasian continent along the Baikal Amur railroad once and entering the East Sea from Vladivostok.

Donetsk, Luansk, Slovansk, and Kharkov, the Donbas regions of eastern Ukraine, declared independence from Ukraine and are still fighting with government forces in a state of quasi-war. Crimea, Ukraine.

Right now, Crimea in Russia and the eastern part of Ukraine are divided into Donetsk Independent Republic and Kharkov Independent Republic.

The Crimean Peninsula (Крим), which the artist visited, is a peninsula located on the northern coast of the Black Sea. Although there is a continuous territorial dispute with Russia, Ukraine is known for being a good place to live and friendly people because it is rich in products and a good place to live in Eastern Europe.

And the neighboring Republic of Belarus (Рэспу́бліка Белару́сь) is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. The capital is Minsk, and the ethnic composition of the ethnic group is Belarusians belonging to the East Slavs, and there are also Ukrainians and Russians. This country is very similar to Russia, and Russian is also spoken.

The Republica Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe located between Romania and Ukraine. The official language is Romanian, the capital is Chisinev (Chisinau), and the ethnicity is Moldovan, who are of Latin descent. Chişinău (Chişinău) is the capital of Moldova and has a population of about 1 million.

Because Moldova is close to North Korea, there are not many Koreans, and it is a place where cheap but high-quality wines are produced. Here, Russian and Latin-speaking Romanian beauties are also popular in Europe.

It is said that the number of Korean visitors is increasing recently, as it is reasonably priced and stable, and security is also good. In addition, the number of Korean students studying engineering, music, or art is gradually increasing. There are a few pastors who visit or reside for pastoral ministry.

Hanshin Lee, the best former Soviet travel writer in Korea who is the author of 'Kishinev, Moldova, Ukraine, Crimea, Belarus,' (Easy Publishing) is the owner of Sundaegukjip in Ahyeon-dong, Seoul. He worked as an expedition leader and a Silk Road expedition leader. In the meantime, he has been walking in the EBS world themed tour ‘Pamirs. He appeared as the main character in Tajikistan.

The books he has written over the past few years are 'The Last Omphalos of Central Asia' (2007), 'In Search of the Hidden Treasure Caucasus' (2008), 'The Baltic States and Colored in Belarus' (2010), 'The Trans-Siberian Railway and Baikal' Amur Railway' (2014), 'Pamir Highway Hell Road Heaven's Road' (2014), and 'Ukraine, Crimea, Belarus, Moldova Kishinev' (2021). daipapa@hanmail.net
