‘Responsible Management’ in the Corona 19 Pandemic... Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Eui-sun ranked first in treasury stock purchase
-Reporter Moon Hong-cheol

As the stock market fluctuated due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), it was found that CEOs of large corporations bought treasury stock one after another.

About one in five CEOs of large corporations bought treasury stocks, and from last year to July this year, the amount of treasury stock purchases by CEOs of top 500 companies by market capitalization amounted to 151.4 billion won.

The CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, Chung Eui-sun, who has been the most active in repurchasing treasury stocks since Corona 19, has purchased more than 880,000 shares. Chairman Chung bought 80 billion won worth of stocks in two companies, Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Mobis, after Corona 19.

According to the CEO Score on the 4th, as a result of a survey on CEO share buyback status from January last year to July 30 this year targeting 500 companies with market capitalization as of July 1st, the number of people who bought treasury stock out of a total of 852 former and current CEOs was 144. They bought a total of 4,737,160 shares for 151.4 billion won, and recorded a valuation profit of 171.9 billion won.

The management's share buyback can be interpreted as a will of 'responsible management'. This is because it is viewed as an expression of confidence in performance as well as a judgment that the stock price is undervalued relative to the future value of the company.

Among the CEOs who repurchased treasury stock during the survey period, 44 members of the owner family accounted for 30.6% of the total. The number of stocks purchased by the owner family was 3,271,041 shares, or 69.1% of the total, and the purchase amount was 134.2 billion won, or 88.6% of the total. Considering the fact that the number of stocks purchased by professional managers was 1,46,119 shares and the purchase amount was 17.2 billion won, the size of the treasury stock purchase by the owner family was significantly larger.

By individual, Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Eui-sun's share buyback was the most active. Chairman Chung purchased a total of 885,092 shares for 81.7 billion won, including 581,333 shares of Hyundai Motor (40.6 billion won) and 303,759 shares of Hyundai Mobis (41.1 billion won). The number of shares accounted for 18.7% of the total number of treasury stock purchases by the CEOs surveyed, and 53.9% of the purchase amount.

Kim Nam-koo, chairman of Korea Financial Group, bought 263,000 shares for a total of 8.6 billion won, making it the second largest treasury stock purchase after Chairman Chung. In addition, Dongkuk Steel Vice Chairman Jang Se-wook, Intron Bio CEO Yoon Seong-joon, and HLB Chairman Jin Yang-gon each bought 100,000 treasury shares. Ecopro Chairman Lee Dong-chae bought 90,000 shares, Korea Asset Trust Vice Chairman Kim Gyu-cheol and MCnex CEO Min Dong-wook bought 90,000 shares each. ) △ Woori General Finance President Kim Jong-deuk (85,000 shares) and △ Samsung Engineering President Choi Seong-an (80,000 shares) were included in the top 20.

Among the top 20 people based on the number of stocks purchased, 6 professional managers were △APTC CEO Woohyung Choi △BNK Financial Group Chairman Jiwan Kim △BNK Financial Group Chairman Jaegyu Lee Jaegyu Vice Chairman Taeyoung Construction △Korea Asset Trust Kim Kyu-tak △Kim Jong-deuk President Woori Securities Co., Ltd. and Samsung Engineering President Choi Seong-an. Their stock purchase amounted to 5 billion won, or only 4.6% of the owner's purchase (110.2 billion won).

By industry, CEOs of the financial industry were actively involved in buying their own shares. Financial CEOs bought a total of 97,690 treasury stocks during this period, accounting for more than 20% of the total. Korea Financial Group (263,000 shares) and BNK Financial Group (115,000 shares), △Korea Asset Trust (90,000 shares) △ Woori Securities (85,000 shares) △Shinyoung Securities (8281 shares) △Hanwha General Insurance (62284 shares) △ Hanwha Investment & Securities (60,800 shares) △ Hanwha Life Insurance (60,000 shares) bought more than 50,000 treasury shares.

The number of treasury shares purchased from food and beverage (2057 shares) and distribution (7,140 shares) was less than 10,000.

On the other hand, as stock prices, which had fallen due to the spread of COVID-19 last year, turned upward, some CEOs recorded tens of billions of won in valuation gains from treasury stock buybacks. Chairman Chung Eui-sun's equity valuation gains were the largest at 126 billion won, followed by Kim Nam-koo, chairman of Korea Financial Group, with 16.6 billion won.
