Yi Sun-sin spared his life for overcoming the national crisis during the war!

A true watchdog attitude

- Dr. Seungseok Roh

The contents of the sayings left by Yi Sun-sin during the Imjin War can be seen in the 『Nanjung Ilgi』 and his collection of works, 『Lichungmugongjeonseo』. Since most of these contents were written by Yi Sun-sin during the war, it contains his desperate will to resist the war and his unwavering desire to overcome the national crisis. Some of these were written by themselves, but others were quoted from old texts that could be instructive or added corrections.

In particular, the words written in the blank space in the 《Nanjung Diary》 are so important that they always use it as a boundary for Yi Sun-sin while he is living in the camp. Nevertheless, it was very regrettable that the source of the phrases was not clearly revealed after the first complete translation of the Nanjung Ilgi was published in 1955. Only recently, although belatedly, there was a case in which the author revealed the exact origin of the word.

As a representative example, among the separate records written after September 15 of the year of Gyesa, there is the following text.

① “Even if you die ten thousand times in battle, you do not look back on your plan to live once, so I feel very resentful. [出萬不顧一生之計憤憤不已]”

If you search for this phrase in the Korean Classical Translation Institute DB, you can find it in Yoo Seong-ryong's 《Seoaejip》 and <Jeongchungnokbal(精忠錄跋)>. Therefore, the author of this text is naturally seen as Yoo Seong-ryong. However, it has been confirmed that the phrase “death of death and death without death” was already used as an idiomatic term in classical Chinese literature for 2,000 years ago. According to Sima Qian's 《Sagi (史記)》 and 〈Jang Jinyeoyeoljeon (張耳陳餘列傳)〉, “The general will go to war with his eyes wide open and shout, For the sake of this, we have removed the cruel enemy.” (“Shinwan Translation of Nanjungilgi Gyojubon” (Yeohae)) Yoo Seong-ryong quoted this phrase and added “Bunbunbuli” afterward.

These nine characters were frequently used by Chinese writers and scholars to signify a determination to make a decisive decision in war. It is also confirmed in the 《Jang Danjing》 of Zhao Yu (趙蕤) and the 《Lee Taebaekjip》 of Li Bai (李白) during the Tang Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty scholar Liu Chang (劉敞)'s Gongshijip (公是集), it was used to mean "soldiers with weapons do not look back when they are outraged when they defeat a strong enemy." Also during the Qing dynasty, archaeologist Go Yeommu (顧炎武), an archaeologist, in the Iljirok (日知錄), said, “The county spirit flyer of the Qi dynasty guards the impromptu and encourages people ” was written in the sense.

Below the above text, there is also the following text, which also recently revealed the exact source.

② I will give my allegiance and strength to make the country comfortable and stabilize my resignation, and die, but I will follow them alive

This passage was written by Yi Sun-sin in the "Nanjung Ilgi" by summarizing the passages in the first year of Hee-pyung (熹平) in "Tonggamjeolyo" and "After Hanki". Chae Jeong-sun (蔡正孫), a mook-jae of the Song Dynasty, said, “When he becomes the head of the country and the world is in peril, he should make the state comfortable and stabilize his resignation. It is right to die with all one's might, but it is right to follow the men and women. (…爲己任 盡忠竭力 death life以之可也)” he said. Even in the first year of Sogong, in the first year of Sogong, there is a content that says, “If it is truly beneficial to resignation, you will die, but the men will follow.” “Sasaengji” means “leaving life out of your mind and following it” (由).

The above two texts emphasized that Yi Sun-sin should fight the war with the attitude of guard life (見危授命) capable of fighting decisively at the expense of his own life in the war with the Japanese army. These are the representative sayings of Yi Sun-sin, “If we must die, we must live”, “If we fight with the strength to fight, we can still do it”, “If we die and die, we will die.” make sense The contents of Yi Sun-sin's words, which contain the spirit of a man who sacrificed his life for the country, are giving important lessons in dealing with crises today. In order to understand this accurately, it was also important to disclose the source cited by Yi Sun-sin.
