남녘의 진주라 그런지 봄이 성큼 와 있었다. 인터뷰를 하고 있는 경상대 캠퍼스의 벤취 근처에 유채꽃이 만발하여 있었다. 봄의 전령사인 유채꽃은 아름답기 그지없었다. 인터뷰는 이어졌다.

-박용규: “아버님(전익선)은 생전에 목사님께 ‘목사님의 증조가 되는 전봉준장군에 대해 어떻게 하여 달라’는 말씀을 남기셨는지요? 예로 들면, ‘때가 되면 너는 전봉준 장군의 증손이라’는 것을 세상에 밝히라고 하지는 않으셨는지요?”
‣전장수: “아버지는 “너는 역적의 후손이니, 말을 잘못하면 죽을 수 있다. 그러니 세상에 밝히지 말라. 너는 선생도 군인도 공무원도 될 수 없다.”라고 말씀하였습니다. 이런 말을 듣고 저는 어린 시절이 암담하였고, 그래서 좌절하였습니다. 우리 집은 모두 힘들게 살았습니다. 전봉준 장군 집안이 아닌, 다른 집안에서 태어났으면 했습니다. 나는 사는 게 힘들었습니다.”
-박용규: “목사님께서는 저를 만났을 때, 같이 사진도 찍고, 이후 제가 언론에 쓸 글을 통해 “내가 전봉준 장군의 증손이다.”라고 밝히실 용의가 있으신지요?”
‣전장수: “네. 사진을 찍을 수 있습니다. 이제는 제가 전봉준 장군의 증손이라고 세상에 공개합니다. 제 나이 12살(1969)이 될 때, 아버지가 저를 데리고 전옥례(94세, 전익선의 고모. 전봉준의 장녀.)씨를 만나러 갔습니다. 전옥례 대고모 할머니는 저에게 “꼭꼭 숨어 잘 커라.”라고 말씀하였습니다. 전옥례 대고모 할머니는 다음 해(1970)에 돌아가셨습니다.”
전봉준의 후예가 ‘역적의 후손’이라는 말은 가당치 않은 말이다. 역적의 후손이라는 말을 듣고 좌절하였다는 전 목사의 말씀을 듣고, 필자는 마음이 아팠다. “전봉준 장군 집안이 아닌, 다른 집안에서 태어났으면 했다.”라는 말씀은 가슴이 쓰린 얘기였다. 전 목사가 전봉준의 직계 후손이라고 이제라도 밝힌 것은 참으로 다행이었다.
전 목사는 제적등본 1통을 가져왔었다. 필자는 전 목사에게 추가 질의를 계속하였다.

-박용규: “제적등본을 볼 수 있는지요?”
‣전장수: “볼 수 있습니다.”
-박용규: “목사님이 전봉준 장군, 조부님, 아버님에 대해 써놓으신 글이 있는지요?”
‣전장수: “내용이 많은 글이 있습니다.”
-박용규: “조부님 사진, 아버님 사진이 있는지요?”
‣전장수: “조부님 사진은 없습니다. 아버님 사진은 동학농민혁명기념재단에 주었습니다. 아버님 사진 한두 장은 있습니다.”
-박용규: “동학농민혁명기념재단에 유족 신청을 할 때, 자료도 제출하였는지요?”
‣전장수: “자료도 제출하였습니다.”
-박용규: “목사님이 태어나서 지금까지 살아온 내력을 말씀하여 주셨으면 합니다.”
‣전장수: “어릴 때는 저를 전우석으로 불렀습니다. 저는 4대 독자입니다. 아버지는 호적에는 이름이 전익선으로 되어 있으나, ‘전상원’이라는 이름도 썼습니다. 부친 전익선은 “족보의 전동일씨 출생년도가 틀리다. 전동길씨가 양자로 갔다.”라고 말씀하였습니다. 저는 1958년 서울 태생으로 30여 년간 삶을 동대문구 숭인동에서 처음에는 판자집에서 천막치고 살다가 블록집에서 기거하였습니다. 창신초등학교를 졸업(당시는 국민 학교)하였고, 대광중학교를 졸업하였습니다. 이후 1년간 ‘대한제본소’에 다녔고, 중동고를 졸업하였습니다. 졸업 뒤 직장을 다녔습니다. 고려대 농업경제학과에 1979년에 입학하였으며, 이후 졸업하였습니다. 고려대 대학원 농업경제학과에서 생산경제학을 전공하였습니다.(1987년 입학, 1989년 졸업. 지도교수 : 김영식(지금은 작고함)) 이후 한국농촌경제연구원에 합격하였고, 근무하였습니다. 이후 다시 박사과정에 입학하였고, 수료하였습니다. 박사논문은 제출하지 않았습니다. 이후 총신대 신학대학원에서 신학을 공부하였고, 졸업하였습니다. 목사 고시를 보았고, 2004년부터 2021년 현재까지 목사로서 활동하고 있습니다. 박사과정 수료 뒤 10년 이내에 박사논문을 제출하면 고려대에서 구제해 주어서, 박사학위논문인 ｢농가소득 불평등과 양극화 분석｣을 제출하였고, 2008년에 박사학위를 취득하였습니다. 호평을 받은 논문이어서, 박사학위논문을 요약해서 학회에 발표하였습니다. ｢농가소득 양극화 현상의 권역별 분석｣이라는 논문으로 학술지(<농업경영정책연구>35, 2008)에 게재되었습니다.”
-박용규 : “제적등본에 나오는 전의천이 전봉준의 아들 전용현이라고 생각하는지요?”
‣전장수 : “저는 전봉준 장군의 증손이라는 것을 확신합니다. 핏줄이니, 다른 조상은 없습니다. 아버지(전익선)로부터 전의천은 전봉준 장군의 아들 전용현이고, 족보의 전동길이라고 들었습니다. 이 말씀을 아버지로부터 수십년 동안 귀에 못이 박히도록 들었습니다.
제가 14살인 중학교 1학년 때, 아버지가 나를 정읍의 무덤에 데리고 가서 ‘너의 증조부 전봉준 장군의 무덤’이라고 알려주었습니다. 아버지와 같이 가서, 한 번 보았습니다.”
감동적인 발언이었다. 전 박사는 자신이 ‘전봉준 장군의 증손이다. 할아버지 전의천은 전봉준 장군의 아들 전용현이다.’라고 밝혔다. 필자는 이제야 전봉준 장군의 증손이라고 밝혀야만 하는 현실이 답답하였다. 우리 역사의 지체를 목격하였다. 전봉준의 증손자라고 밝힌 분이 ‘경제학 박사’라는 사실도 처음 알았다.
