Island Biennale Organizing Committee Launches ‘Memories of the Island’ Public Art Project Contest

Ahead of the inaugural ‘2027 Island Biennale’—set to open on April 3, 2027—the Island Biennale Organizing Committee is hosting a contest for the public art project ‘Memories of the Island,’ in which residents of South Chungcheong Province will directly participate in the creation process.

The contest will run for 22 days, from September 14 to October 5.

The initiative aims to transform the memories, landscapes, and daily stories of Boryeong and West Sea islands—cherished by the province's residents—into public art, thereby collaboratively creating a symbolic space for the Biennale.

Participation is open to residents of South Chungcheong Province across four categories: young children, youth (elementary, middle, and high school), adults, and people with disabilities. Participants may submit drawings, handwritten messages, or photographs capturing their memories of the province's islands in any format they choose.

The Organizing Committee plans to select approximately 1,000 entries, reproduce them as illustrated tiles, and permanently install them on the outdoor walls of the Biennale Plaza at the ‘Island Culture & Art Platform’—the main Biennale venue scheduled for completion this December. Selected works will be engraved with the participant's name or a preferred alias.

Applications can be submitted by individuals or groups via mail or online. Final results will be announced in December, and all selected participants will receive two admission tickets to the 2027 Island Biennale.

Meanwhile, the 1st Island Biennale—the nation’s first event dedicated to the theme of islands—will take place over a two-month period starting April 3, 2027, across the areas of Wonsando and Godaedo islands in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province. Around 70 artists from 24 countries are set to participate in the event and showcase a diverse range of works.
