Gongju National University and Chungnam National University Merger Briefing Sparks Shouting and Protests; Gongju Citizens Vow "Vehement Opposition to Absorption Merger"
Opposition from the local community in Gongju is intensifying over the push for the merger between Gongju National University and Chungnam National University. Voices expressing concern over the lack of procedural legitimacy and the potential outflow of key local assets have erupted, revealing a stark contrast in sentiment between the two sides.
A chill ran through the "Dialogue with Citizens on the Merger of Gongju National University and Chungnam National University," held on the 8th at the main auditorium of the Gongju Art Center Goma, from the very beginning.
While the university side presented the background and research results regarding the merger—aimed at addressing the declining school-age population and the concentration of population in the capital area—shouts of "Stop the media stunts" and "Absolutely oppose the merger" erupted from the audience, causing the briefing to descend into disarray.
Citizens, alumni, and faculty members attending the event pointed out that the proposed merger plan is, in effect, nothing more than an "absorption merger" that tarnishes the reputation of Gongju National University. As it became known that the merger application currently under discussion includes a plan to name the university "Chungnam National University" and designate Daejeon as its legal representative location, criticism poured in, arguing that the substance and identity of Gongju National University, with its 78-year history, would disappear.
Procedural issues also came under fire, including the "blind push" proceeding without specific information such as academic records, diplomas, and affiliate status, as well as the attempt to reapply last year's voting criteria.
Local political circles also lent weight to citizens' concerns, advocating for caution. Gongju Mayor Choi Won-cheol cited the past instances of population and functional outflow experienced by Gongju during the launch of Sejong City, emphasizing that sufficient consensus and communication acceptable to the local community must precede the process.
Gongju City Council Chairman Lee Beom-su also stated, "We cannot tolerate a merger that results in disadvantages to Gongju City's educational assets and regional development."
In response, Gongju National University President Lim Gyeong-ho clarified, "There will be no campus reduction or closure; rather, this is a survival choice aimed at strengthening functions and establishing Gongju as a base," while apologizing for the lack of communication. Chungnam National University President Kim Jeong-gyeom also presented plans for utilizing the Okryong-dong campus and fostering the College of Education; however, he avoided giving immediate answers to key demands, such as the "relocation of the legal headquarters to Gongju" or the "relocation of Chungnam National University’s teacher training departments to Gongju," leaving them as matters for consultation among the university members.
The backlash from the local community is not an unconditional rejection, but rather focuses on "re-discussion from scratch" and "transparent information disclosure."
With a vote by members and additional briefing sessions approaching, attention is focused on whether the university can overcome the strong distrust expressed by residents during the recent briefing and find a new point of agreement.
