Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City Launches Full-Scale Medical and Industrial Leap Forward for Mokpo and Southwest Region… ‘Southwest Region Development Strategy TF’ Activated
TF Formed with Administrative Vice Mayor as Head… Comprehensive Measures for ‘Southwest Region Great Leap Forward Initiative’ to be Announced This Month; Follow-up to President Lee Jae-myung’s Cabinet Meeting Directive… Focusing on Central Government Cooperation and Strategic Public Investment
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City has set out in earnest to lay the foundation for a ‘Southwest Region Great Leap Forward’ aimed at dramatically improving medical conditions in the Southwest region, centered on Mokpo City, and securing future growth engines.
The Integrated Special City announced that it has activated the ‘Southwest Region Development Strategy TF,’ headed by the Administrative Vice Mayor, and plans to release the ‘Southwest Region Great Leap Forward Initiative’ this month. This comprehensive plan encompasses medical services, universities, and regional development, incorporating public suggestions and expert opinions. This measure is a follow-up to the order made at the Cabinet meeting presided over by the President on the 1st to review central government support plans for the Southwest region. At the time, President Lee Jae-myung mentioned the deep sense of loss felt by residents in the Southwest region due to the failure to select a candidate university for the establishment of a new national medical school, and urged relevant ministries to “actively review support measures at the central government level in consultation with the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City.”
Accordingly, the Integrated Special City plans to create a new turning point for regional development by concentrating strategic public investment, including medical innovation, and institutional support on the Southwest region.
The newly launched ‘Southwest Region Development Strategy Task Force’ is headed by the Vice Mayor for Administration, with the Director of Policy Planning serving as the overall deputy head to oversee the formulation of comprehensive development measures. The task force’s working organization is composed of four dedicated teams: ▲establishment of a medical system, ▲regional development, ▲improvement of living conditions including social infrastructure (SOC), and ▲university support. In addition to consulting with experts in each field, the task force plans to actively reflect the voices from the field in policy by operating a consultative body involving local and political circles. Channels will also be opened to gather practical ideas from residents and the public. A "Public Proposal Platform" will be established on the government's "Communication Innovation 24" platform and the Integrated Special City website to accept proposals regarding medical infrastructure in the Southwest region, university competitiveness, and regional development strategies.
The Integrated Special City plans to finalize and announce the "Southwest Region Great Leap Forward Initiative" this month by synthesizing collected public proposals, expert consultations, and local opinions. Furthermore, the city plans to actively recommend projects requiring national-level support to the central government and enhance policy implementation through close consultation with relevant ministries.
An official from the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City emphasized, "We will prepare a substantial comprehensive plan containing bold investments and support measures necessary for medical innovation, living conditions, universities, and industry as a whole, so that the Southwest region can spread its wings for a new leap forward."
