K-water paves the way for a sustainable industrial future by expanding its mutual growth ecosystem.

K-water (Korea Water Resources Corporation, CEO Yoon Seok-dae) announced on September 7 that it is recruiting participants for its program to strengthen the ESG competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Applications from partner SMEs will be accepted online from September 7 to 18.

Amidst the turbulent industrial landscape characterized by the restructuring of global supply chains and stricter ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) regulations, K-water has stepped forward to provide tailored support aimed at boosting the self-reliance of its partner SMEs. This initiative focuses on helping SMEs—which often struggle to establish their own ESG infrastructure—achieve fundamental operational improvements and fostering an ecosystem for sustainable, shared growth.

This "5th K-water SME ESG Support Program" targets SMEs within K-water’s supply chain that have held contracts with the corporation between January 1, 2025, and the date of the public notice. Applications will be accepted via the "K-Water Industry Support Portal" for 12 days, concluding at 6:00 PM on September 18. Approximately 20 companies will be selected based on a comprehensive review of their capabilities and the specific types of support required.

A notable feature of this year’s open call is the significant diversification of support categories. The program comprises four categories: two general tracks—▲ESG Basic (re-issuance) and ▲ESG Standard—and two specialized tracks—▲ISO Certification (Environment, ISO 14001) and ▲ISO Certification (Occupational Health & Safety, ISO 45001). Tailored support is provided to meet the specific preferences and readiness levels of each company. Notably, the addition of support for obtaining ISO international standard certifications aims to go beyond simple diagnostics and foster the establishment of global-standard management systems from multiple angles. Furthermore, in collaboration with the implementing agency, the Korea Productivity Center (KPC), the initiative establishes a close follow-up management system to ensure that the ESG capabilities developed by participating companies are sustained long after the program concludes.

Companies that successfully complete the evaluation and receive the "Certificate of Excellence in ESG for SMEs" are granted a robust package of incentives. Benefits include preferential loan interest rates through major financial institutions—such as KB Kookmin, Shinhan, IBK Industrial Bank of Korea, Hana, and BNK Kyongnam Bank—as well as priority access to KOTRA’s overseas export support programs and the Korea Institute of Energy Research’s environmental and energy technology support initiatives. Additionally, the program offers multi-layered support that directly aids business operations, such as preferential treatment in K-water’s registered technology evaluations and favorable interest rates on mutual growth cooperation deposits.

K-water’s efforts toward mutual growth are already yielding tangible results. Since launching the program in 2022 with a mutual growth fund, the corporation has provided intensive support to strengthen the ESG competitiveness of 82 SMEs, achieving the remarkable outcome of 80 of them obtaining the Certificate of Excellence. Building on this track record, the corporation solidified its standing as a leader in ESG by winning the "2025 Korea Shared Growth Award"—hosted by the Korea Commission for Corporate Partnership—and achieving the highest "Excellent" grade in the 2025 public institution shared-growth evaluation for the first time since its inception.

Han Seong-yong, Head of the Green Infrastructure Division at K-water (Korea Water Resources Corporation), opened his remarks by explaining the purpose of this initiative and emphasizing the importance of strengthening the ESG foundations of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

"This project is a core program designed to provide support that enables companies to secure and strengthen ESG capabilities tailored to their specific needs," said Han, urging SMEs to participate actively and transform their operational structures. He added, "Leveraging our years of experience and expertise, we will continue to support SMEs in enhancing their ESG management capabilities and establishing a foundation for sustainable growth." He stressed that the initiative must go beyond one-off assistance, requiring a combination of hands-on, field-oriented consulting and meticulous follow-up management. Furthermore, he remarked, "In the rapidly changing global market, the ESG competitiveness of our partner companies translates directly into our own competitiveness and forms the backbone of the national water industry," calling for an all-out effort to build a sustainable ecosystem for shared growth.

This fifth support initiative is expected to serve as a pivotal turning point, enabling SMEs to voluntarily gain ESG momentum and lower barriers to entering global supply chains. By moving beyond mere charitable aid to offer a comprehensive support package covering finance, exports, and certification, the initiative is poised not only to boost the sustainability of the entire water industry but also to establish itself as a prime example of mutually beneficial cooperation between public institutions and SMEs.   hang5247@hanmail.net
