Poet Kim Ki-joon + Writer Choi Sung-soon Publish Poetry Collection ‘Standing Tall in Blue Silence’... “Fusion of Marine Science and Poetry”

- Literary Critic Lee Chung-jae

Poet Kim Ki-joon, who is also a professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Yonsei University Severance Hospital, and writer Choi Sung-soon have become a part of a team touring the world's oceans. The resulting work has been published as a poetry collection (*Standing Tall in Blue Silence*) by Jihye Publishing, garnering significant attention.

Poet Kim Ki-joon and writer Choi Sung-soon personally go scuba diving in oceans all over the world, including the Galapagos Islands, whenever they have the time. This poetry collection can be considered the fruit of those endeavors. It holds special significance and value in that they have captured the imagery and characteristics of these new worlds—which are inaccessible to the average reader—in the form of poetry and published it as a single volume. Poet Kim Ki-joon and writer Choi Seong-soon have previously introduced the book *Where Did the Whale Shark Go in That Sea?*, a work that fuses marine science and poetry. However, the significance of this newly published poetry collection lies in the prominent expansion of its literary merit and visual imagery.

Poet Kim Ki-joon is a "poet-doctor" who has embodied the humanism he felt for his patients as a doctor (*Kind and Beautiful*, *Wake Me Up*) as a literary characteristic, and has gradually presented the value of life to readers through the relationship between people and objects (*Courtesy Toward People and Objects*).

Readers can catch two birds with one stone and receive profound inspiration, not only because this collection represents an attempt at poetic creation that is beyond the reach of ordinary poets, but also because it represents a fusion of marine ecosystems and poetry—a product of the direct experiences of two individuals: a writer who captures the vibrant reality of the marine ecosystem in photographs and a poet with exquisite command of language. In the sense that they directly explored underwater ecosystems around the world while simultaneously weaving poetic inspiration to imbue meaning into individual poems, the work of these two artists is undoubtedly an intellectual endeavor that no one else can imitate. United as one, the two authors share these wondrous phenomena with readers, conveying the importance of environmental protection and a philosophy of life that seeks to heal the pain of ecosystem destruction—which we have forgotten—and the severe crisis facing the universe due to the advancements of civilization. In this sense, this poetry collection is not merely a digital camera anthology combining photographs and poetry; it is perfectly fitting to read it as an urgent warning message sent to the people of the world through the fusion of the significance of the underwater ecosystem and poetic literature. autom12@naver.com
