A public opinion poll has revealed that President Lee Jae-myung's approval rating for his performance in state affairs has dropped to 36.2%. His disapproval rating stood at 61.1%, widening the gap between positive and negative to 24.9 percentage points. Even in the Honam region, his core support base, disapproval stood at 48.9%, slightly ahead of approval at 48.6% within the margin of error, signaling a rough road ahead for his administration.

These results were announced on the 1st, based on a regular poll conducted by the polling agency Research View from the 29th to the 31st of last month, targeting 1,000 men and women aged 18 and older nationwide. This is a concerning development, as the majority of respondents who gave a negative rating stated that he is "doing a very poor job," at 52.2%.

By age group, approval ratings were highest among those in their 50s, at 43.1%. Following this, approval ratings fell below 50% across all age groups, in the order of 40s (39.8%), 60s (38.6%), 70s and older (33.9%), 18-20s (31.7%), and 30s (27.3%). Notably, even among the core support base of those in their 40s and 50s, positive ratings were found to be more than 10 percentage points lower than negative ratings.

By region, approval ratings remained below the 30% range in all areas except Honam (48.6%). Specifically, the figures were Seoul 37.1%, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam 37.0%, Gyeonggi and Incheon 35.4%, Chungcheong 33.5%, Daegu and Gyeongbuk 29.7%, and Gangwon and Jeju 29.0%. Conversely, disapproval ratings were in the 60% range in all regions except Honam.

Amid fierce backlash over the nominations of Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won and Gender Equality and Family Minister nominee Yong Hye-in, analysis suggests that pushing through these appointments could lead to a further decline in support. It is also observed that if issues such as the withdrawal of indictments related to President Lee’s trial arise in the future, the situation is highly likely to spiral out of control.

In terms of party support, the Democratic Party of Korea was surveyed at 39.9%, and the People Power Party at 32.4%. Following these were the Cho Kuk Innovation Party at 4.5%, the New Reform Party at 3.2%, the Progressive Party at 1.4%, the Basic Income Party at 1.2%, the New Future Democratic Party at 1.1%, the Justice Party at 0.7%, and the Social Democratic Party at 0.6%. Other parties accounted for 1.1%, those with no preferred party 12.9%, and those unsure 1.2%.

In the district elections of the April 2028 general election, the parties voters least wanted to vote for were the Democratic Party of Korea (44.6%), the People Power Party (40.1%), the Cho Kuk Innovation Party (7.0%), the New Reform Party (3.2%), and the Progressive Party (1.1%). With a veto rate of 84.7% for the two major parties, this provides an indication of the extent of the voter base's dichotomous polarization and conflict regarding Korean politics.

This poll was conducted via an automated response system (ARS) using 100% wireless telephone RDD. The response rate was 2.5%, and the margin of error is ±3.1%p at a 95% confidence level. For more details, please refer to the website of the National Election Survey Deliberation Committee.
