People Power Party’s Jang Dong-hyuk and Jeong Jeom-sik Criticize Undermining ROK-US Alliance and Judiciary
- "Diplomacy, Security, and Livelihood Face Deepening Challenges... We Will Stand Against the Giant Ruling Party’s Legislative Rampage and Judicial Seizure"
- Urge Withdrawal of Cabinet Reshuffle Nominations Including Kim Seung-won and Yong Hye-in... Demand Shift in State Policy Direction
- Pledge to Focus on Responding to Pending Livelihood Issues, Including Price Stabilization for Chuseok and Normalization of Real Estate Taxation
— Lee Je-hang, Senior Reporter/Poet, Break News
The leadership of the People Power Party has come forward to strongly criticize the Lee Jae-myung administration’s foreign and security policies, as well as its policies regarding the judiciary, taxation, and real estate, while urging a complete shift in the direction of state affairs.
With the opening of the regular session of the National Assembly on September 1, the party leadership, including Party Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk and Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik, collectively pointed out concerns regarding the weakening of the ROK-US alliance, allegations of external pressure during the Supreme Court Justice nomination process, and the issue of a security vacuum resulting from the push to adjust police investigative powers and abolish supplementary investigative authority. The leadership characterized the recently announced cabinet reshuffle as "political appointments intended to shield the public and do not meet public expectations," and demanded the withdrawal of the nominations for Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won and Gender Equality and Family Minister nominee Yong Hye-in.
Furthermore, while warning of strict scrutiny of the 2027 budget bill and the need to stabilize livelihood prices ahead of Chuseok, they urged the ruling party to proceed with common pledges regarding people's livelihoods and cooperate on supplementary legislation.
Remarks and Message by Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk
Expressing Concerns Regarding the ROK-US Alliance and Diplomacy and Security
First, Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk expressed deep concern regarding South Korea's diplomatic and security situation via his social media on September 1, citing U.S. President Trump's remarks in an interview regarding Korea. Leader Jang stated, "In a Fox News interview, U.S. President Trump specifically pointed out that 'Korea refused a request for help, saying they would rather not do it,'" adding that "the road ahead for South Korea's diplomacy and security is truly fraught with difficulties." He went on to point out, “The U.S. is pushing for U.S.-North Korea dialogue while bypassing South Korea, and North Korea is mocking South Korea,” emphasizing, “The ROK-U.S. alliance is, in itself, national defense, the economy, and people’s livelihoods; if it is destroyed, neither national defense nor the economy can possibly remain intact.” He also raised his voice regarding recent diplomatic moves, such as the suspension of ROK-U.S. joint military exercises, stating, “Diplomacy based on the ‘I say I respect you, so you believe I really do’ attitude will never work.”
Stance on Supreme Court Justice Nominations and the Judiciary
Representative Jang also sharply criticized the process of nominating Supreme Court Justices and current issues concerning the judiciary. Representative Jang Dong-hyuk raised an issue, stating, “There is a report that the Blue House initially recommended two judges, Kim Min-ki and Park Soon-young, but when the Supreme Court attempted to nominate Judge Park Soon-young, they suddenly changed their stance and demanded the nomination of Judge Kim Min-ki.”
He pointed out, “Judge Park Soon-young, who was rejected despite the justification that the number of female Supreme Court justices must be increased to ensure diversity, is also a woman,” adding, “There is no precedent for the Blue House specifically singling out a particular judge to request a nomination.” He continued, “If it were truly a fabricated indictment, the court would naturally issue a verdict of not guilty,” and criticized, “Isn’t the reason they are attempting to seize control of the judiciary and pushing for the cancellation of the trial because they know the defendant is guilty?”
Call for Investigation into Financial Policy and Public Officials
In addition, Representative Jang strongly demanded an investigation into the financial issues surrounding the resignation of former Blue House Policy Chief Kim Yong-bum. Representative Jang stated, “Due to single-stock leverage ETFs, the stock market turned into a gambling den, the public’s bank accounts were emptied, and only securities firms made money,” pointing out, “The fact that former Chief Kim’s son and the son of Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin work at the same securities firm is a clear subject for investigation.” At the same time, he stated, “The Board of Audit and Inspection remains completely silent, wary of the ruling administration,” and demanded, “Given that the damage to the public amounts to 54 trillion won, this is not a matter that can be resolved with a resignation; we must proceed with a special prosecutor to hold those responsible accountable.”
Demand for Re-investigation into Police Investigation and Public Security Sectors
Regarding the Jeju Provincial Police Agency’s announcement of investigation results, Representative Jang criticized the conclusion that the incident was merely the personal misconduct of Deputy Police Officer Bu. Representative Jang pointed out, “Despite there being far more circumstances suggesting homicide than grounds to believe it was suicide, no investigation into other possibilities was conducted at all.”
Furthermore, he raised his voice, stating, “There are 25 additional cases of Deputy Police Officer Bu falsely closed that have come to light, and as many as 15 cases where records were deleted after being recorded as death, yet the responsibility of the chain of command was not examined at all.” He insisted, “The case itself must be reinvestigated from scratch, and the investigation must be entrusted to a special prosecutor.” In addition, he reiterated concerns regarding the potential for inadequate public security in relation to the prosecution’s move to abolish supplementary investigation authority.
Criticism of Real Estate Taxation and Housing Policy
Finally, regarding real estate policy, Representative Jang also strongly criticized the government's tax reform plan passed by the Cabinet. Representative Jang Dong-hyuk pointed out, “It amounts to nothing more than slightly lowering the tax burden on non-resident single-home owners, while the reduction of the special deduction for long-term ownership was pushed through as is,” adding, “Dividing single-home owners into residential and non-resident categories is a communist-style idea in itself.”
He further emphasized, “The President threatens that housing prices will plummet due to high interest rates and a surge in auctions, but the market is breaking record highs day after day,” and stressed, “Severe accountability must be demanded for the government’s real estate tax bomb and housing policy failures.”
Remarks and Message by Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik
Proposal for Additional Designation of Tongyeong Region as a Special Disaster Area
First, Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik announced via his social media on September 1 that he had strongly requested support for flood recovery in Tongyeong City and the additional designation of the region as a special disaster area. Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik stated, “I met with Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-joong and the Director General of the Disaster Recovery Support Bureau, and once again strongly requested that the entire area of Tongyeong City be additionally designated as a Special Disaster Zone.”
Floor Leader Jeong said, “Damage such as landslides and flooding occurred one after another due to the recent heavy rainfall, and the worries of residents in island regions and other areas where recovery efforts have not fully reached are deep.” He proposed, “The scope of the designation must be expanded to the entire city so that not a single citizen is excluded from support.”
Criticism of the Confirmation Hearing for the Minister of Justice Nominee
During a meeting of floor leaders at the National Assembly, Floor Leader Jeong mentioned the recently announced cabinet reshuffle and demanded the withdrawal of the nomination of Kim Seung-won as Minister of Justice. Floor Leader Jeong pointed out, “All six ministerial candidates fall short of the public’s expectations, and the number one priority for withdrawal is Representative Kim Seung-won, the nominee for Minister of Justice.”
Floor Leader Jeong criticized the nomination, stating, “Nominee Kim is one of the figures who laughed heartily during the floods in July 2020, a leading advocate for the abolition of supplementary investigative powers, and the vanguard of the movement to cancel indictments.” He added, “Nominating a former co-representative of the Association for the Cancellation of Indictments (Gongchimo), which aims to cancel President Lee Jae-myung’s criminal trials, sends a message that the top priority of state affairs is the cancellation of indictments.” He urged, “Representative Kim Seung-won is not qualified to oversee legal administration, so the President must withdraw the nomination.”
Criticism of Prolonged Vacancy of Police Commissioner and Public Security Discipline
Floor Leader Jeong then raised his voice regarding the prolonged vacancy of the Police Commissioner position and the issue of adjusting investigative powers. He stated, “It makes no sense that the police have remained under an acting leadership system for one year and eight months, while the head of a massive organization has been vacant for over 600 days.” He further expressed suspicion, asking, “I suspect that leaving the leadership vacant is intended to induce internal competition for loyalty.” Furthermore, he pointed out, “The police are causing confusion by changing their stance on the false closure of the Jeju missing person case from a presumed suicide to an unknown cause of death,” adding, “It is out of order to discuss police reform without first appointing the head of the organization.”
Urging Reconsideration of the Abolition of Supplementary Investigation Authority
Finally, Floor Leader Jeong urged the government and the ruling party to make a decision regarding the push to abolish the supplementary investigation authority, which is just one month away. Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik stated, “It is dangerous to abolish the supplementary investigation authority in a situation where there is significant public distrust regarding the police’s investigative capabilities and will,” and demanded, “The government and the ruling party must immediately reconsider the abolition of the supplementary investigation authority and appoint a National Police Commissioner right away to embark on police reform.” He added, “I hope they will consider the lives and safety of the people for at least a fraction of the effort they pour into withdrawing the indictment against the President.”
Remarks on Current Issues by the Leadership at the Floor Strategy Meeting
Policy Committee Chairperson Lim I-ja (Real Estate and Chuseok Livelihood Measures)
Policy Committee Chairperson Lim I-ja urged President Lee Jae-myung to prepare real estate policies and measures regarding prices and high interest rates during the Chuseok holiday. Chairperson Lim stated, “President Lee Jae-myung is once again making a serious misstep regarding real estate measures,” and criticized, “In a reality where Seoul apartment prices have continued to rise for 114 consecutive weeks, the instruction to prepare a mass purchasing system in anticipation of a housing price crash is armchair theorizing that is disconnected from reality.”
She continued, “What the people want is the belief that high-quality housing will be sufficiently supplied,” and demanded, “Since the People Power Party will submit amendments to the Urban Planning Act and the Urban Redevelopment Act to raise the floor area ratio for private redevelopment and reconstruction to up to 1.3 times the legal limit, we ask the Democratic Party to agree as well.”
At the same time, she urged, “With Chuseok approaching, prices of agricultural products such as napa cabbage and spinach are skyrocketing, and the burden of loan interest is intensifying due to the hike in the base interest rate,” adding, “The government must immediately establish a special task force for Chuseok grocery prices, provide liquidity to vulnerable borrowers and small business owners, and prepare mid-to-long-term economic measures to prevent stagflation.”
Furthermore, she added, “The banking sector must not excessively raise loan interest rates to pass the burden on to ordinary citizens, and financial authorities must set an example by severely punishing unfair practices.”
Secretary General Jeong Hee-yong (Criticism of Cabinet Reshuffle and Stance on Regular Session)
Secretary General Jeong Hee-yong addressed the government’s announcement of the cabinet reshuffle and its stance on the regular session. Secretary General Jeong criticized the Lee Jae-myung administration’s reshuffle of six ministries, calling it “a reshuffle that goes against the people’s livelihoods by ignoring public demands, and a reshuffle intended for self-protection.”
He continued by arguing, “The belated resignation of the Blue House Policy Chief, who took responsibility for the turmoil in the stock market, and the nomination of a lawmaker who served two terms as a proportional representative as the candidate for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, fall short of the expectations of young people who desire fair competition.”
He added, “Public distrust is mounting during the 100-day regular session of the National Assembly beginning today due to instability in real estate taxation, attempts to undermine the judiciary, and mismanagement of elections.” He urged, “I call for a halt to the unilateral legislative runaways and a fundamental shift in the direction of state administration to place the people's livelihoods at the center.”
Kim Seung-soo, Senior Deputy Floor Leader (Criticism of the Committee on Popular Culture Exchange and the 'Phenomenon' Event)
Kim Seung-soo, Senior Deputy Floor Leader, raised concerns regarding the Lee Jae-myung administration's governance and the actions of the Committee on Popular Culture Exchange. Kim argued, "Just over a year after the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration, as its capacity to govern has hit rock bottom and approval ratings have plummeted, it is pushing ahead with large-scale government-orchestrated cultural events for regime propaganda."
He continued to criticize, stating, "The Committee on Popular Culture Exchange, launched last year, was born amidst illegal and irregular practices and has squandered its budget without any operational achievements." He further asserted, "The 'Phenomenon' event, scheduled for December 2027, is a politically motivated event intended for public propaganda and agitation to divert attention ahead of the 2028 general election."
He then raised his voice, stating, “Immediately stop this politically motivated event reminiscent of the dictatorial regime’s ‘Gukpung 81’ and abolish the Committee for the Exchange of Popular Culture.” He added, “Co-chair Park Jin-young must also stop tarnishing the reputation of pure artists, and we will thoroughly investigate this during future parliamentary audits and budget reviews.”
Kim Mi-ae, Senior Deputy Floor Leader for Policy (Criticism of Real Estate Policy and the Basic Housing Line)
Kim Mi-ae, Senior Deputy Floor Leader for Policy, raised concerns regarding the government’s direction of housing policy. She demanded, “What is the reason the President ordered a mass purchase system for public housing in the event of a housing price crash, and nominated an individual who promoted Basic Housing as the candidate for Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport?”
She further emphasized, “The Lee Jae-myung administration must clarify whether the final vision for the housing market it is envisioning is a society of citizen homeownership or a society centered on state-owned Basic Housing.” She argued, “We must abolish ideological real estate policies focused solely on taxes and loan regulations, and safeguard the ladder for the middle class that allows them to acquire homes according to their repayment ability.”
Furthermore, she conveyed, “I strongly urge a clarification of the relationship between the ‘Basic Housing’ initiative and the directive for mass purchases, the disclosure of targets for long-term home ownership, and a transition to policies based on market principles.”
Park Hyung-soo, Secretary of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee (Pointing out the unconstitutionality regarding the demand for re-nomination of Supreme Court Justices)
Park Hyung-soo, Secretary of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, criticized the Blue House and the ruling party regarding their demand for the re-nomination of Supreme Court Justice candidates. Secretary Park criticized, “The Blue House and the Democratic Party’s demand to exclude specific candidates and re-nominate them is an unconstitutional act that exercises authority not granted by the Constitution.”
He continued to rebuke the move, stating, “This approach renders the Chief Justice’s right to nominate, guaranteed by the Constitution, meaningless and is a political ploy by the appointing authority to select Justices according to their own whims.” He went on to say, “A president who refuses to submit a motion for approval, thereby preventing the National Assembly from exercising its power to hold confirmation hearings, is the one truly disregarding the National Assembly,” and urged, “The Blue House and the ruling party must stop these unconstitutional acts and immediately submit the motion for the appointment of nominee Son Bong-gi, who has already been nominated, to the National Assembly.”
Choi Hyung-doo, Secretary of the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee (Criticism of the Committee’s Budget Review and Media Policy)
Choi Hyung-doo, Secretary of the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, addressed the disruption of the committee’s Budget Review Subcommittee. Secretary Choi pointed out, “The ruling party abandoned its statutory duty of reviewing the budget settlement, citing the controversy over so-called ‘false and manipulated news,’ and passed the matter on to the Budget and Accounts Committee.”
He continued by emphasizing, “The False and Manipulated News Prevention Act is facing concerns that it infringes upon freedom of expression, and the fundamental solution to false information is to guarantee a forum for free public discourse.” He then called on the committee to “stop its political offensives and return to its fundamental mission of leading national tasks such as Korea’s AI, aerospace, and science and technology.”
Seo Il-jun, Secretary of the Political Affairs Committee (Clarifying Responsibility for Financial Policy and Stance on the Regular Session)
Seo Il-jun, Secretary of the Political Affairs Committee, addressed recent loan regulations and turmoil in the financial market. He pointed out, “While the suffering of the people intensified due to the volatility of high-risk financial products and strict lending thresholds, the economic control tower failed to function properly.”
He continued, “During the regular session starting today, we will thoroughly investigate the problems in the process of introducing single-stock leverage ETFs and pursue a parliamentary inquiry.” He further emphasized, “We will examine the confusion on the ground caused by the total household loan limit system and hold those responsible for flawed policies accountable.”
Lim Jong-deuk, Secretary of the National Defense Committee (Criticism of the Push for Military Academy Consolidation)
Lim Jong-deuk, Secretary of the National Defense Committee, raised concerns regarding the government’s push for the consolidation of military academies. Lim Jong-deuk, Secretary of the National Defense Committee, criticized, “President Lee Jae-myung is unilaterally pushing ahead with the closure and consolidation of military academies, which will cost approximately 3 trillion won, without gathering opinions from the public or those on the ground.”
He further pointed out, “It is inappropriate to present a guideline to the new nominee for Minister of National Defense to push for the consolidation of military academies.” He urged, “Nominee Kang Shin-chul must rectify the unconstitutional consolidation plan from scratch, based on military expertise and conscience, rather than obedience tailored to the tastes of those in power.”
Yoo Young-ha, Secretary of the Intelligence Committee (Review of North Korea-US Dialogue Trends and Security Posture)
Yoo Young-ha, Secretary of the Intelligence Committee, pointed out security risks related to trends in North Korea-US dialogue. Yoo stated, “It is a matter of serious concern that arguments are emerging within the United States arguing that the reality of North Korea’s nuclear possession must be acknowledged and arms control negotiations must be engaged.” He further warned, “During the North Korea-US deal process, the principle of denuclearization could fade, and the trust in extended deterrence, the core of the ROK-US alliance, could be shaken.” At the same time, she emphasized, “The government should not lower its security posture and act as a pacemaker for dialogue, but must uphold the principles of denuclearization and the security of the Republic of Korea as its top priority.”
Kang Sun-young, Secretary of the Gender Equality and Family Committee (Urging the Withdrawal of the Nomination of Yong Hye-in as Minister of Gender Equality and Family)
Kang Sun-young, Secretary of the Gender Equality and Family Committee, raised concerns regarding the nomination of Yong Hye-in as the Minister of Gender Equality and Family. Secretary Kang criticized, “Candidate Yong is an unqualified figure lacking expertise, as the relevant bills she has sponsored are merely rehashes.”
She further pointed out, “The attitude of attempting to simultaneously hold both a proportional representation seat in the National Assembly and a ministerial position is a privilege that does not meet the expectations of the public.” She urged, “It is a clear self-contradiction for a person who supported the abolition of the prosecution’s supplementary investigation authority to serve as the Minister of the ministry responsible for protecting female crime victims, so the nomination must be withdrawn immediately.”
Kang Myung-gu, Secretary of the Public Administration and Security Committee (Urging Investigation into Jeju Missing Persons Case and Appointment of Police Commissioner General)
Kang Myung-gu, Secretary of the Public Administration and Security Committee, pointed out the inadequacy of the investigation into the Jeju missing persons case. Secretary Kang criticized the police, stating, “Suspicions are being raised that the police are trying to tailor the investigation to fit a predetermined conclusion, such as by reversing their statements regarding the cause of death within just a week.”
He continued by demanding, “All possibilities must be kept open to clarify the suspicions so that the bereaved families and the public can accept the findings.” He also urged the government to “promptly appoint a leader capable of resolving the security vacuum and restoring the police’s shattered trust.”
Bae Jun-young, Secretary of the Finance, Economy and Planning Committee (Criticism of Tax, Real Estate Policies, and Fiscal Management)
Bae Jun-young, Secretary of the Finance, Economy and Planning Committee, criticized the government’s tax and fiscal policies. Secretary Bae pointed out, “Appointing those responsible for the failure of the real estate tax system to key positions and pushing for taxation under the pretext of tax normalization makes it impossible for the public to trust the government.”
She continued by pointing out, “There is a lack of coordination between policies, such as funds intended to boost the stock market flowing into real estate purchases.” She urged, “You must face the reality of the stagnant domestic economy despite rising national tax revenues; do not be fixated solely on fiscal figures, but establish a system where the people can prosper together.”
Lee In-sun, Secretary of the Education Committee (Urging a Cessation of the Targeted Investigation into the Chairman of the Northeast Asian History Foundation)
Lee In-sun, Secretary of the Education Committee, criticized the Ministry of Education’s push to dismiss the Chairman of the Northeast Asian History Foundation. Secretary Lee pointed out, “The Ministry’s attempt to force through the dismissal despite the court’s decision to grant an injunction to revoke the suspension of duties constitutes an unreasonable, targeted ouster.”
She further emphasized, “The excessive display of loyalty toward an agency head with little time left in their term must stop immediately.” She urged, “Minister of Education Choi Kyo-jin must bear in mind that he could face liability for abuse of power and immediately withdraw the attempt to dismiss the Chairman.”
Kim Dae-sik, Secretary of the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee (Pointing out reduction of ROK-US joint exercises and security instability)
Kim Dae-sik, Secretary of the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, pointed out the reduction of ROK-US joint military exercises and the diplomatic and security situation. Secretary Kim stated, "Even with the reduction of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, North Korea has hinted at a 'strongest possible' response, and warning signs are ringing in the ROK-US alliance, such as our warships not participating in multinational exercises."
He further emphasized, "We will proceed with a report to the National Assembly and verification regarding the circumstances of consultations with the U.S. and concerns about the weakening of the security posture." He urged, "Since peace is protected only by strength, strengthen your security posture to avoid sending the wrong signals to the U.S. and North Korea."
Jeong Dong-man, Secretary of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee (Notice of verification of Hong Ji-sun, nominee for Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport)
Jeong Dong-man, Secretary of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, raised issues regarding the nomination of Hong Ji-sun as the nominee for Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Secretary Jeong pointed out, "Nominee Hong is a figure who was in charge of housing policy during the tenure of Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung, and is not the right person to correct a misguided policy direction." He went on to emphasize, “We must not cling to existing real estate policies in the face of skyrocketing housing prices and Jeonse and monthly rents in Seoul.” He added, “A shift toward new policies is necessary, such as the abolition of loan regulations and the relaxation of floor area ratios for private redevelopment projects, and we will thoroughly verify this through the confirmation hearing.”
Baek Jong-heon, Secretary of the Health and Welfare Committee (Demands Resolution of Uncertainty Regarding Basic Pension Reform Plan)
Baek Jong-heon, Secretary of the Health and Welfare Committee, pointed out issues in the process of pushing forward with the Basic Pension reform. Secretary Baek stated, "Due to the Ministry of Health and Welfare's sudden cancellation of the briefing, anxiety among the elderly regarding the reduction of eligibility for the Basic Pension has reached its peak."
He further criticized, "The recipient rate could decrease if the standard median income is applied, and the issue of reductions in livelihood benefits has also not been resolved." He emphasized, "The government must clearly disclose the impact on recipients by year and income bracket, and we will scrutinize the matter thoroughly to ensure that the number of recipients is not unilaterally reduced without social discussion."

Lim I-ja, Chairperson of the People Power Party Policy Committee (Joint Policy Committee Meeting of Ruling and Opposition Parties and Promotion of Common Pledges on Public Welfare)
First, Lim I-ja, Chairperson of the People Power Party Policy Committee, stated that at the joint policy committee meeting with the Democratic Party of Korea, they agreed to establish a consultative system to handle pending issues regarding public welfare on the first day of the regular session of the National Assembly.
Chairperson Lim I-ja said, “I believe that even if the ruling and opposition parties are in conflict, we must put our heads together to find solutions in the face of the common denominator of public welfare.” She proposed, “Let’s legislate together the pledges that both parties promised in the last local elections, lay out the policies and bills prepared by each party, select the bills related to public welfare first, and pass them as soon as possible.”
She continued, “Let us deliberate sufficiently on contentious bills and cooperate on supplementary legislation,” emphasizing, “In particular, regarding the Yellow Envelope Act and the bill to abolish supplementary investigative powers, I hope we can discuss supplementary measures together so that the public does not suffer any harm.”
Kim Eun-hye, Chairperson of the People Power Party's Policy Committee, who attended the meeting, expressed her determination to scrutinize the confirmation hearings. Chairperson Kim raised her voice, stating, "There is public sentiment that the confirmation hearing for Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won—the 'main dish' of this cabinet reshuffle and the representative of the withdrawal of indictments—must be conducted rigorously to convey the will of the people, even if it means staying up for two or three nights for the sake of the rule of law."
The policy committee chairpersons of the ruling and opposition parties agreed to hold regular meetings every two weeks. After the meeting concluded, Policy Committee Chairperson Lim I-ja stated, "The next meeting will be a breakfast gathering on the 15th of this month," adding, "We will coordinate and adjust bills related to people's livelihoods among our campaign pledges."
Yoo Sang-beom, Secretary of the People Power Party’s Budget and Accounts Committee (Announcement of Position on the 2027 Government Budget Proposal)
Yoo Sang-beom, Secretary of the People Power Party’s Budget and Accounts Committee, opened his remarks by characterizing the 2027 budget proposal submitted by the Lee Jae-myung administration as a "fiscal runaway, rubber-band budget" and signaling a thorough scrutiny at the parliamentary level.
Yoo Sang-beom criticized the proposal, stating, "If you expand spending by issuing deficit bonds because the economy is bad, or expand spending because of excess tax revenue, when on earth will you repay the bonds to reduce the burden on future generations?" He further argued, "The budget proposal for next year submitted by the government is not the current administration's slogan of 'Irreplaceable Republic of Korea,' but rather an 'Unmanageable Republic of Korea' that merely shifts debt onto future generations without a shift in policy direction."
He continued by pointing out, “Even though next year’s national tax revenue increased by 194.2 trillion won, the national debt actually rose by 106 trillion won, expanding to 1,519.8 trillion won.” He added, “Not only is the record-breaking expenditure of 820.9 trillion won insufficient, but they are also attempting to separately manage a massive surplus of 104.4 trillion won from the Future Response Fund; this is the administration’s personal piggy bank.”
He further stated, “Considering the surplus funds of the Future Response Fund, which can be used without parliamentary oversight, the effective budget for next year amounts to 925.3 trillion won, representing a growth rate of 27.1%.” He demanded, “The 104.4 trillion won must be used as a priority for national debt repayment.” In addition, Secretary Yoo Sang-beom stated, “The Bank of Korea has shifted to austerity by raising the base interest rate to 3.0% to stabilize prices, yet the government is increasing the money supply through expansionary fiscal policy, which constitutes a serious policy mismatch.” He added, “We will thoroughly cut wasteful elements and populist spending, and improve policies that are solely focused on regulation.”
All members of the People Power Party’s Finance and Economy Planning Committee (Press conference regarding the government’s finalized 2026 tax reform plan)
All members of the People Power Party’s Finance and Economy Planning Committee held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center and demanded the withdrawal of the remaining tax increase proposals and the disclosure of re-estimation data regarding the government’s finalized 2026 tax reform plan. All members of the Finance and Economy Committee stated, “As the saying goes, ‘If you make a mistake, do not hesitate to correct it,’ we must not hesitate to rectify it if there is a fault.” They added, “The fact that the government withdrew the restrictions on carrying over ISA contract periods and contribution limits, and restored the caps on Comprehensive Real Estate Tax deductions and tax burdens, just twenty-nine days after announcing the tax reform plan, confirms for itself that the party’s criticism was correct.”
They continued to criticize, saying, “However, at the time of the announcement, they called the plan that was to be reversed in just one month ‘normalization,’ and listed ‘support for national asset formation’ as the identical reason for reducing and withdrawing ISA benefits.” They asked, “How can the public trust a government that created two diametrically opposed plans under the same pretext?”
The committee members pointed out, “Only the numbers have been reversed; the core of the tax increase remains unchanged, including the plan to raise the Fair Market Value Ratio, the reduction of deductions for single-home owners jointly owned by non-resident couples, and the restructuring of the long-term capital gains tax deduction for single-home owners.” They further criticized, “Despite partially reversing the Comprehensive Real Estate Tax, they are passing the buck to the National Assembly for review without disclosing data on recalculated revenue effects or tax burden incidence.”
In addition, noting that “approval accounted for only 3.1% of public opinions received during the legislative notice period,” they urged for “the immediate disclosure of re-estimated revenue effects reflecting the amendments, submission of results regarding the handling of public opinions, withdrawal of the plan to raise the Fair Market Value Ratio, and submission of accountability for unconfirmed provisions.”
Jeong Hee-yong, Chairman of the People Power Party’s Special Committee on Organizational Strengthening (Open recruitment for organizational chairpersons in 36 troubled party chapters nationwide)
Jeong Hee-yong, Chairman of the People Power Party’s Special Committee on Organizational Strengthening, announced that an open recruitment process for organizational chairpersons for parliamentary constituencies will be conducted targeting 36 troubled party chapters nationwide. Jeong Hee-yong, Chairman of the Special Committee on Party Reorganization, explained the purpose of the open recruitment, stating, “We have decided to introduce a party member voting system in this recruitment process to broadly reflect the will of party members in the selection of organizational committee chairpersons,” and added, “We intend to select a figure with regional representation and organizational competitiveness based on the support of local party members.”
Chairman Jeong continued, “Applications will be accepted for three days from September 7 to September 9 through the People Power Party’s online application system,” explaining, “We plan to complete the selection process for organizational committee chairpersons swiftly to minimize operational gaps in troubled party chapters and normalize local organizations early.” He further added, “The public announcement will run for five days from September 2 to September 6.”
In addition, Chairman Jeong clarified the policy regarding certain exceptional regions. Chairman Jeong stated, “We have decided to postpone discussions regarding the three regions—Busan Saha-gu Eul, Daegu Dalseo-gu Byeong, and Ulsan Ulju-gun—where district committee chairmen received disciplinary suspension of party membership rights, considering that the period for filing a re-examination has not yet expired.” He added, “We will focus on reorganizing a total of 36 electoral districts subject to open recruitment, including 5 in Seoul, 10 in Gyeonggi, 7 in Jeonnam Gwangju, and 5 in Jeonbuk.”
Park Chung-kwon, Senior Spokesperson for the People Power Party (Commentary on the Lee Jae-myung Administration’s Withdrawal of Tax Reform Plan)
Park Chung-kwon, Senior Spokesperson for the People Power Party, criticized the Lee Jae-myung administration’s partial withdrawal of the tax reform bill, characterizing it as a "fickle change of heart" and "bureaucratic mismanagement." Senior Spokesperson Park Chung-kwon stated, “The Lee Jae-myung administration’s predatory tax hike spree ultimately ended in a full-scale surrender after just 29 days.” He pointed out, “The government’s withdrawal of the plan to reduce the basic deduction for the Comprehensive Real Estate Tax (Jongbu Tax) for non-resident single-home owners and to raise the tax burden ceiling, restoring them to current levels, is a result of officially admitting its own immaturity in tax design and its inadequacy to reality.”
Park continued, “Despite the existence of genuine buyers who cannot reside in their homes due to reasons such as job relocation or caregiving—given the nature of the housing market where moving and lease agreements are intertwined—the government placed them on the list of punitive tax targets using the simplistic criterion of ‘non-resident.’” He criticized, “By impulsively pushing through policies that stifle ordinary investors, such as restrictions on ISA subscriptions, the government has put the people’s property rights and freedom of residence to the test.”
He went on to point out, “The fact that the government, which had championed the ‘principle of actual residence,’ reversed its policies one after another upon facing internal party backlash and a shift in public sentiment demonstrates that the national tax system is being swayed by partisan interests.”
In addition, Chief Spokesperson Park Chung-kwon expressed his determination, stating, “The People Power Party will rectify every single remaining distorted clause during the regular session’s tax law review process,” and added, “We will achieve trustworthy tax normalization so that the people’s property rights and right to residence do not become hostages to political experiments.”
People Power Party Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul (Commentary Criticizing Yong Hye-in, Nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family)
People Power Party Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul launched a scathing attack on Representative Yong Hye-in, who was nominated as a ministerial candidate, for refusing to resign from her parliamentary seat, labeling it as vested-interest politics.
Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul criticized, “Nominee Yong Hye-in showed a willingness to seize both the ministerial position and the parliamentary seat, claiming that ‘if she resigns, the Basic Income Party faces the difficulty of becoming an extra-parliamentary party.’” He added, “The proportional representation seat Nominee Yong secured is a position she merely transferred her party affiliation to after entering the National Assembly through a Democratic Party-led satellite party; her behavior of claiming this as the exclusive property of the Basic Income Party is a ‘thief’s mentality.’”
Spokesperson Cho continued, “If she is afraid of becoming an extra-parliamentary party, she should simply re-enter the Assembly through merit and the people’s choice.” He urged, “Do not brazenly advocate for vested-interest politics that only inflicts a sense of relative deprivation on other parties while numerous minority parties are striving for fair competition.”
He then asked rhetorically, “Is this the principle behind the selection of the Minister of Gender Equality and Family nominee, which the Lee Jae-myung administration claims is to realize the values of fairness and the vulnerable?” In addition, Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul warned, “Putting the name ‘youth’ at the forefront does not make it youth politics,” adding, “If the controversy over appointments being made for personal advancement and vested interests continues, there will be no more support from the youth under the Lee Jae-myung administration.”
Ham In-kyung, Spokesperson for the People Power Party (Commentary Criticizing the Controversy Over Nominee Yong Hye-in’s Dual Positions and Party Subsidies)
Finally, Ham In-kyung, Spokesperson for the People Power Party, strongly criticized the stance of Yong Hye-in, the nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, regarding her intention to retain her parliamentary seat, calling it a sense of entitlement.
Spokesperson Ham pointed out, “Nominee Yong entered the National Assembly through a proportional representation coalition party led by the Democratic Party in both the 21st and 22nd terms,” adding, “It is only natural for a party to become an extra-parliamentary party without a lawmaker, yet she asks the public to understand this responsibility by citing it as the ‘difficulties of a minority party.’”
Spokesperson Ham continued, “If Nominee Yong maintains her parliamentary seat, the Basic Income Party will remain a parliamentary party and continue to receive party subsidies, while Nominee Yong’s spouse currently serves as a key party official within the Basic Income Party.” She further criticized, “At this point, it is only natural for the public to question whether she is trying to protect the minority party or her family’s political base; this is the reason why Representative Ahn Cheol-soo criticized it as the ‘Family Income Party.’”
She argued, “The attitude of holding onto the ministerial position, retaining the parliamentary seat, and refusing to relinquish even the party’s financial foundation is not a generational shift, but merely another form of privilege.” Furthermore, Spokesperson Ham In-kyung urged self-reflection, stating, “Look back at equality before speaking of gender equality,” and asking, “How can one speak of fairness and equality as the Minister of Gender Equality and Family when one takes personal privileges for granted and refuses to give up what belongs to one’s own family?” hang5247@hanmail.net
