Korean Religions Suffering Persecution Under the Lee Jae-myung Administration... ‘The Inside Story of the Unification Church, Shincheonji, and JMS’

- Moon Il-suk, Publisher of this Newspaper

Three new Korean religions and Protestant-leaning denominations—the Unification Church (Family Federation for World Peace and Unification), Shincheonji (The Temple of the Tabernacle of Testimony of Jesus Christ), and JMS (The Gospel Mission)—are suffering ‘persecution’ under the Lee Jae-myung administration. The leaders of these denominations—President Han Hak-ja (83), General Chairman Lee Man-hee (95), and President Jeong Myeong-seok (81)—are all elderly, yet they are currently under arrest and imprisonment. Why is this the case? First, let us examine the brief history of these denominations.

▲ Unification Church (Official Name: Family Federation for World Peace and Unification) = This religious group is a new religion founded in Korea in 1954 by Sun Myung Moon. It is well known for its large-scale mass weddings and global missionary and business networks. It officially launched in 1954 when its founder, Sun Myung Moon, established a church in Seoul under the name "World Christian Unification Spiritual Association." In 1966, *The Divine Principle*, a scripture containing the core doctrines and ideology of the Unification Church, was published. Starting in the 1970s, in accordance with doctrines emphasizing the sanctity of the family, the group began to actively conduct large-scale international mass weddings (blessing ceremonies). In 1997, in line with the changing times and doctrinal shifts, the name was changed to the "Family Federation for World Peace and Unification."

Following the death of the Unification Church's founder, President Sun Myung Moon, in 2012, his wife, President Hak Ja Han, took the center of the succession. During this process, internal conflicts arose, including lawsuits with her sons over church authority and assets. President Han Hak-ja proclaimed the "Holy Assembly of Heavenly Parents" in 2020. She has established and operated the "Holy Assembly of Heavenly Parents" system as a higher-level concept encompassing the Family Federation and its affiliated organizations.

From its inception, the Unification Church has adopted overseas missionary work as its core strategy. It laid the groundwork for global missions by sending its first missionaries to Japan in 1958 and to the United States in 1959. In particular, its success in Japan and the U.S. became the foundation for its immense capital in the future. During the 1960s and 70s, amidst the Counterculture movement sweeping through Western society at the time, the church attracted young Westerners by leveraging Eastern doctrines and rigorous community training methods. Currently, according to the denomination's announcement, missionaries and infrastructure have expanded into approximately 190 countries worldwide. Beyond Protestant-style missionary work, it has employed a strategy that runs parallel with various external organizations and business networks, including the media (USA: The Washington Times; Korea: Segye Ilbo), education (Sun Moon University and other Sun Moon Foundations), corporations (Tongil Group, Yongpyong Resort, etc.), and peace movements.

▲ Shincheonji (Official Name: Shincheonji Church of Jesus Testimony Tabernacle) = This denomination is a new religion in Korea founded by Lee Man-hee in 1984. It has simultaneously attracted significant social controversy and attention both domestically and internationally due to its unique interpretation of the Book of Revelation and secret missionary methods.

In 1984, Chairman Lee Man-hee officially founded the 'Shincheonji Church of Jesus Testimony Tabernacle' with figures from the Tabernacle Church, establishing its headquarters in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. In 1990, the Zion Christian Mission Center was opened. It established a free Bible education institution that became the core foundation of Shincheonji's growth. It implemented a system where individuals were required to complete a course of approximately six months to be registered as official members. In 1995, the group established an organizational structure modeled after the 12 tribes of Israel found in the Bible, managing national and global regions by dividing them into 12 districts (such as John, Peter, and James of Busan). Since the 2000s, it has rapidly expanded its influence, primarily among the youth, through so-called "harvesting" methods that infiltrate established churches, as well as so-called "deceptive evangelism" disguised as surveys and psychological counseling. In 2020, following a cluster infection centered around a church in Daegu, the group's secretive operational methods and omissions from proselytizing lists were exposed, leading to fierce social criticism and legal investigations within the country.

Shincheonji began overseas missionary work in 1993; however, as domestic evangelism became difficult, particularly following the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, the group turned its attention to overseas markets to expand its influence. According to announcements from the Religious Research Institute and internal denominational sources, the number of overseas members is estimated to be over 60,000. Approximately 70% of its members are located in Asian countries. It is said that the majority of overseas believers are concentrated in Asia, with the proportion in mainland China and Mongolia being particularly overwhelming. Five branches have established a presence in the United States (including major cities such as Los Angeles and New York), and recently, the group has expanded its influence into Europe, including Germany, France, and the Netherlands, prompting local governments and religious communities to issue alerts. Recently, the group has been promoting aggressive proselytizing—specifically inducing existing legacy churches to switch to Shincheonji banners—as its core achievement.

▲ Christian Gospel Mission (also known as JMS) = This denomination is a new religion in South Korea founded by Jeong Myeong-seok in 1978. It is more widely known to the public by the name "JMS," derived from the founder's initials. After being influenced by the Unification Church's anti-communist lecturers from 1978 to the early 1980s, founder Jeong Myeong-seok began full-scale activities in 1978 by establishing "Aecheon Church" in Namgajwa-dong, Seoul. Leading with Jeong Myeong-seok’s unique biblical interpretation known as the "30 Doctrines," the group significantly expanded its influence during the 1980s and 1990s by intensively proselytizing to the youth demographic in university districts, including those at prestigious universities such as Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University.

To refresh its public image and reorganize its structure, it established its current official name, the "Christian Gospel Mission (CGM)," after passing through organizations such as the World Youth and University Students MS Federation and the International Christian Union. It designates the "Wolmyeongdong Nature Sanctuary," located in Geumsan-gun, South Chungcheong Province, as its internal holy site.

From the late 1990s to the mid-2000s, JMS systematically strengthened its overseas missions (International Mission Bureau). The organization claims to have expanded into approximately 70 countries worldwide. Japan is the country where it has most successfully established itself among its overseas mission fields. It has established dozens of churches and branches throughout Japan and has even acquired religious corporate status. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the church expanded its influence by actively engaging in online evangelism via social media, targeting anxious Japanese university students. It has also deeply infiltrated regions such as Taiwan and Hong Kong, primarily among students at prestigious local universities. Systematic international missionary organization: The denomination has established an "International Mission Bureau" and deployed members capable of foreign language interpretation.

Since the Lee Jae-myung administration took office, these three groups—new religions originating in Korea—have all been suffering persecution. Internally, the denominations claim this is religious persecution.

Unification Church President Han Hak-ja was arrested on September 22, 2025 (following the issuance of an arrest warrant and detention at the Seoul Detention Center). The charges include violations of the Political Funds Act, the Anti-Corruption Act, embezzlement, and instigation of the destruction of evidence. She was arrested during the special prosecutor's investigation into the so-called "allegations of collusion between religion and politics and manipulation of state affairs." He is accused of embezzling religious funds by delivering 100 million won in illegal political funds to a ruling party lawmaker through an aide and handing over luxury necklaces and bags for the purpose of soliciting favors.

Shincheonji Chairman Lee Man-hee was arrested on June 24, 2026. Violation of the Political Parties Act and the Public Official Election Act (charges of coercing party membership and interfering in elections). Details: He was arrested by the Joint Investigation Headquarters of the Police and Prosecutors as suspicions of collusion between religion and politics emerged, alleging that he systematically forced over 50,000 Shincheonji followers to join the People Power Party using the disguised name of the so-called 'Pilates Project.'

JMS (Christian Gospel Mission) President Jeong Myeong-seok was released in 2018 after serving time for sex crimes; the charges included quasi-rape, quasi-sexual assault, forced indecent assault, and quasi-forced indecent assault. He was released in 2018 after serving his full sentence. Subsequently, he was re-arrested on charges of habitually sexually assaulting and molesting foreign nationals (Hong Kong and Australian citizens) and domestic female followers at the Wolmyeong-dong Training Center in Geumsan, South Chungcheong Province, by using his religious status as the Messiah to render them psychologically helpless. The date of his arrest was October 4, 2022. Trials regarding this case proceeded, and a 17-year sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court; he is currently incarcerated.

The reason for the arrest of the leaders (cult leaders) of these three new religious denominations is the confirmation of criminal offenses resulting from violations of current laws.

The three denominations—the Unification Church (Family Federation for World Peace and Unification), Shincheonji (Shincheonji Church of Jesus Testimony Tabernacle), and JMS (Christian Gospel Mission)—are Korean-made new religions (the term "new religion" is a neologism coined by the Japanese during the Japanese colonial period). These three denominations share several common characteristics. These characteristics include being a new religion of Korean origin, possessing a unique (emergent) doctrinal system based on Protestantism, focusing on overseas missions, having followers in countries around the world, and being conservative denominations that oppose communism. As new religions of Korea, these denominations have, in some respects, played the role of Korean religions that contribute to the national interest. These denominations possess universities, daily newspapers, large-scale outdoor healing sites, and massive international organizations. They also have tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of members. In their own ways, they are contributing to the development of the nation and society. We should pay attention to the emergent nature of these denominations, which created something out of nothing, and note that they are expanding globally and succeeding.

Coincidentally, all three of these denominations are conservative. They have pursued anti-communism. In this regard, it is pointed out that they are becoming scapegoats, trapped within the political frame of the progressive administration's destruction of the conservatives. Investigating authorities are presenting evidence that the leaders of these denominations aided the conservative party in every way possible. Under the current constitution, the government is temporary and finite, lasting for five years. However, religion is almost always eternal.

The founding dates of these denominations are the Unification Church in 1954, Shincheonji in 1984, and JMS in 1978. Even simple man-made objects are treated as cultural heritage after the "period of one human generation," or about 30 years, has passed. Judging by their founding years, these new religions have already become localized. So why are they being suppressed to such an extreme degree? Who exactly is writing this massive scenario of the suffering and the annihilation of conservatism faced by the three major conservative Korean religions? Is it a national intelligence agency? A political party's policy maker? Or is it just a coincidence? There is concern about the backlash from this political suppression—social unrest.

If there is an invisible hand employing such policies, I advise it to quickly withdraw its hand from being an obstacle that weakens the momentum of expansion in the field of Korean-made, emergent K-religion extending overseas.

Since all three denominations are Protestant Christian organizations, their members are currently praying: “Lee Jae-myung administration, do you not fear Heaven? May God’s judgment surely come someday!” They are appealing for an end to religious persecution and for a grand reconciliation—specifically, the release of the detainees.
