The Chae Su-jeong Sori Troupe will take the stage at the ‘Korea-Japan Hangawi Festival in Niigata 2026,’ hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Niigata (Consul General Lim Seung-cheol). On September 18, they will present ‘Our Sound Festival,’ a program consisting of Pansori, Daegeum solos, Gayageum Byeongchang, and folk songs, at the Ryutopia Concert Hall of the Niigata City Arts and Culture Center.

The Chae Su-jeong Sori Troupe is a professional performance group led by Master Singer Chae Su-jeong, a recipient of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Pansori *Heungboga* and a professor at the School of Traditional Arts at the Korea National University of Arts. Since its founding in 2021, the troupe has consistently presented regular performances and special projects centered on the original forms of tradition. For this performance, the troupe will present the following six stages. 1. Danga ‘Sacheolga’ (Ham Su-yeon, Jeong Sang-hee | Drummer Kim Min-gyeol) / 2. Daegeum Solo ‘Merry-Go-Round of Life’, ‘Always and Forever’ (Hwang Woo-ju) / 3. ‘Heungbo Breaking the Gourd’ from Pansori *Heungbo-ga* (Ham Su-yeon, Jeong Sang-hee, Shin Yun-ju | Drummer Kim Min-gyeol) / 4. Gayageum Byeongchang Folk Songs ‘Kkottaryeong’, ‘Ongheya’ (Ji Hyun-ah | Drummer Kim Min-gyeol) / 5. ‘Sarangga’ from Pansori *Chunhyang-ga* (Shin Yun-ju, Kim Min-gyeol | Drummer Jeong Sang-hee, Daegeum Hwang Woo-ju) / 6. Namdo Folk Songs, K-Folk Songs, Arirang Medley (All Performers)

1. Danga ‘Sacheolga’ (Ham Su-yeon, Jeong Sang-hee | Drummer Kim Min-gyeol)

The Our Sound Festival performance opens with veteran singers Ham Su-yeon and Jeong Sang-hee performing the Danga ‘Sacheolga’ accompanied by the rhythm of Drummer Kim Min-gyeol. Opening. Danga are short songs sung by singers to warm up their voices and set the mood for the performance before the main Pansori begins. Among these, "Sacheolga" is a widely known piece. It became particularly popular through the scene in Director Im Kwon-taek's film *Seopyeonje* where Yubong and the blind Songhwa sing it while walking along a country path.

2. Daegeum Solo "Merry-Go-Round of Life" and "Always With You" (Hwang Woo-ju)

In the subsequent Daegeum solo performance, Hwang Woo-ju will play "Merry-Go-Round of Life" and "Always With You," two lyrical melodies from Japanese animation. As melodies familiar to Japanese audiences are revived through the deep, long breath of the Daegeum, a traditional Korean wind instrument, attention is focused on what kind of resonance the sensibilities of these different cultures will create.

"Merry-Go-Round of Life" and "Always With You" are two representative songs from the animation music of Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation production company. "The Merry-Go-Round of Life" is the representative theme song of Director Hayao Miyazaki's feature-length animated film *Howl's Moving Castle*, while "Always with Me" is the ending theme song for *Spirited Away*. "The Merry-Go-Round of Life" is a work by composer and conductor Joe Hisaishi. "Always with Me" features lyrics by Wakako Kaku and music composed and sung by singer-songwriter Yumi Kimura.

Based on a 3/4 waltz rhythm, "The Merry-Go-Round of Life" is a song where brightness and shadow intersect amidst deep melancholy. It is varied in various forms throughout the film, driving the image of the characters' transformations and the cyclical nature of life. "Always with Me" carries the message that one discovers the light and vitality within oneself even after passing through loss and separation. When listened to in conjunction with the movie's narrative, it evokes the inner turmoil of Chihiro as she returns to reality after completing her adventure.

Hwang Woo-joo graduated from the National Gugak Middle and High School and is currently majoring in the daegeum at the School of Traditional Arts, Korea National University of Arts. He pursues new possibilities based on the refined breath of tradition. We look forward to seeing how the deep, long breath carried in his daegeum sound will evoke the longing residing within the human heart.

3. ‘Heungbo Breaking the Gourd’ from the Pansori *Heungbo-ga* (Ham Su-yeon, Jeong Sang-hee, Shin Yun-ju | Drummer Kim Min-gyeol)

In this performance, veteran singers Ham Su-yeon and Jeong Sang-hee share the vocal parts with Shin Yun-ju, a member of the Chae Su-jeong Sori Troupe, while Kim Min-gyeol provides the drum accompaniment. The scene depicts the kind-hearted Heungbo breaking open the gourd he harvested after planting the seeds he received as a reward for treating an injured swallow. It is a stage where the exuberance and humor, aligned with the spirit of Hangawi celebrating abundance and sharing, will be conveyed across borders.

4. Gayageum Byeongchang Folk Songs ‘Kkot Taryeong’ and ‘Ongheya’ (Ji Hyun-ah | Drummer Kim Min-gyeol)

The fourth performance is a gayageum byeongchang stage by Ji Hyun-ah. She sings ‘Kkot Taryeong’ and ‘Ongheya’ to the rhythm of drummer Kim Min-gyeol. Gayageum byeongchang, characterized by singing while playing the gayageum, features a deep resonance where the instrument’s delicate timbre and the singer’s voice blend together as one. ‘Kkot Taryeong,’ which sings of the radiance of flowers, and ‘Ongheya,’ which embodies the vigorous joy of labor, unfold the rich sentiments of the Chuseok holiday.

Ji Hyun-ah received the Presidential Award, the Grand Prize in the Master Division, at the 24th Korea Bitgoeul Instrumental Music Festival in 2025. Prior to that, she received the Prime Minister’s Award, the overall top prize, at the 18th National Traditional Music Competition in 2020, and won first place in the gayageum byeongchang division at the 47th Jeonju Daesaseup Nori National Competition in 2021. Byeongchang, a vocal performance involving plucking the gayageum, demands precise breathing and concentration. Ji Hyun-ah’s singing stands out for its precise tone, clear vocalization, and lively use of rhythm.

5. ‘Sarangga’ from Pansori *Chunhyangga* (Shin Yun-ju, Kim Min-gyeol | Gosu Jeong Sang-hee, Daegeum Hwang Woo-ju)

‘Sarangga’ is one of the representative passages of *Chunhyangga*. Shin Yun-ju, a member of the Chae Su-jeong Sori Troupe, sings the role of Chunhyang, while Kim Min-gyeol, a young artist who seamlessly transitions between singing and playing the drum, takes on the role of Mongryong. Veteran singer Jeong Sang-hee holds the drumsticks, and Hwang Woo-ju adds the melody of the daegeum. The scene where Chunhyang and Mongryong confirm their feelings for each other is composed as a split vocal performance by Shin Yun-ju and Kim Min-gyeol.

6. Namdo Folk Songs, K-Folk Songs, and Arirang Medley (All Performers)

The grand finale of the performance is adorned with a medley of Namdo folk songs, K-folk songs, and Arirang sung together by all the performers. Arirang is a song that has preserved the joys and sorrows of the Korean people and the memories of their community, embracing melodies and lyrics that vary by region. It is a song that becomes a longing when sung alone, but a bridge and a path connecting people when sung together. The Arirang sung by all performers together will become a stage of borderless harmony, uniting even the audience in Niigata as one.

Furthermore, a highlight of this performance is the video background artwork provided by artist Lee Tae-yang. The videos projected as the backdrop for each stage feature Lee Tae-yang’s mother-of-pearl lacquerware, capturing traditional Korean landscapes and the atmosphere of Hangawi. These works revive the luminous glow of traditional crafts through a modern visual sensibility. The sounds on stage paint unseen landscapes, while the video art in the background embraces unheard songs. We look forward to seeing how these two arts fill each other's voids and create a resonance between sound and video.

‘Our Sound Festival’ was planned by PD Park Seul-gi, who graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at Seoul National University College of Fine Arts and is active in the World Pansori Association and the Chae Su-jeong Sound Troupe. The abundance of Hangawi does not exist solely in granaries filled with grain. In the moment when people of different languages, histories, cultures, and environments gather to listen to songs and share their hearts, this abundance transcends borders. Heungbo’s benevolent heart, Chunhyang’s love, the cycle of the seasons, and the longing of Arirang will convey our traditions to the Niigata audience not as unfamiliar heritage, but as living emotions. A performance featuring anime music familiar to Japanese audiences played on the Korean daegeum (bamboo flute) is expected to vividly illustrate the moment when the two cultures draw closer to each other's hearts.

Moonlight does not draw borders on the sea. The same is true of sound. A song that begins with a single person's deep breath meets the rhythm and spreads through the voices of many, reaching another heart across the sea. In 2026, marking the 10th anniversary of the festival's launch and the 20th anniversary of the Ulsan-Niigata Friendship and Cooperation Agreement, the sounds of ours resounding in Niigata ahead of Hangawi will become a bountiful path of mutual understanding and connection of hearts. artwww@naver.com
