In a fleeting moment, the boundary between life and death lies.

My mind became calm during the midday meditation session at Gwancheoksa Temple. Passing by Tapjeong Lake, I stopped by the Cultural Center to see a painting exhibition by Jo Sang-ryeol.

The artist introduces "Red Mountain" and "Scent of Time" as a series of images visualizing the concept of the mountain as nature that heals life. This was achieved after he realized, through the perspective of a moment of experiencing death, that the existence of death on the other side of life is the essence of life.

By understanding life, one can infer death. "Can I return to myself?" The image of oneself that comes to mind after having traveled too far; Odysseus had to endure the waves and the passage of time burdened by guilt over the civilization he had destroyed.

He chose a finite life of returning to his home rather than an eternal one, and while he finds the roots of a life lived with the people he loves, that sea may have been a journey to discover his inner self.

What is important in human life is not how long one lives, but what one lives for; living a finite life properly is more important than living forever.

Ultimately, the process of returning to oneself, like the sun hanging over a mountaintop, is likely the path to the ultimate meaning of life and death.
