Welcome Democratic Party Leader Kim Min-suk’s policy to protect citizens who pay high real estate taxes!

Moon Il-suk, Publisher of the Newspaper (This Publication)

I welcome the intervention of Democratic Party Leader Kim Min-suk in the government’s real estate policy. In the August 23rd issue of Break News, under the headline “Democratic Party Leader Kim Min-seok: ‘Reasons for Non-Resident Single-Home Owners Should Be Broadly Recognized... Blind Spots Must Be Eliminated,” the publication stated, “On the 23rd, Democratic Party Leader Kim Min-seok attended the 10th High-Level Party-Government Consultative Meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Seoul Residence and emphasized a ‘healthy tension’ for rational policy coordination alongside close cooperation between the party and the government.” The report continued, “While Leader Kim expressed principled agreement with the government and the Presidential Office’s stance on expanding real estate supply and the direction of tax reform, he conveyed several supplementary opinions regarding real estate taxation, which is of high public interest.”

According to this article, Democratic Party Leader Kim Min-seok expressed his aspirations during his opening remarks, stating, “While the direction of the success of the Lee Jae-myung administration remains the same through the unity of the party, government, and Blue House, I will play a changed role suited to my position,” and added, “I will faithfully fulfill my role differently from the government, with a sense of comradely responsibility and legislative responsibility.”

The key remarks of Democratic Party Leader Kim Min-seok are reported below and It is the same.

“Regarding non-resident single-home owners, it was pointed out that ‘various unavoidable real-world reasons for non-residentship must be broadly recognized, and blind spots must be eliminated.’ In particular, regarding the Comprehensive Real Estate Tax (CRE Tax), citing the natural increase resulting from rising official property values, it was suggested that ‘in-depth deliberation is necessary’ regarding the adjustment of the basic CRE Tax deduction for non-resident single-home owners (from 1.2 billion won to 900 million won) and the expansion of the tax burden ceiling (to 200%). Regarding the plan to convert the special deduction for long-term ownership under capital gains tax into an income deduction for long-term residency, it was added that ‘while there is a positive aspect to the direction of a market policy centered on actual residence, we must carefully examine whether the chain reaction of institutional reform will have a negative ripple effect on the Jeonse and monthly rent markets.’” Kim Min-seok, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, reportedly encouraged the government's efforts regarding the expansion of supply—the core of housing stability—by stating, "We must mobilize every means and method available." He also promised, "As the ruling party, we will fulfill our legislative responsibilities to accelerate supply expansion, including shortening licensing procedures and abolishing various regulations."

Korea has entered the ranks of the world's top 10 economic powers. This miracle is referred to as "compressed growth." During this process, there exists a force that has made the nation prosperous and powerful. In other words, it is the so-called wealthy group. In the real estate policies implemented by the government so far, this could be the wealthy residents of the Gangnam area in Seoul. While pushing forward with real estate tax policies, the government has, in a sense, demonized the wealthy. It is true that the wealthy are the group that has paid a significant amount of real estate-related taxes over the years. Regardless of the type of tax, a healthy society is one where citizens who pay a lot of taxes are respected. Regarding the government's welfare policies... Consequently, this is because they are a force being sacrificed for the sake of those who live off the benefits of the various welfare and preferential funds for the elderly that the government has been providing. Providing welfare benefits to the marginalized poor may be an easy way to win votes during elections. However, a healthy society is one where those who pay a lot of taxes are respected, not criticized.

There is ample social justification for respecting those who pay high taxes. The reason for this social respect lies in the fact that they make the most decisive material contributions to the maintenance and development of the community. Taxes are the core funding for building social infrastructure such as roads, ports, and public transportation. They sustain national systems that protect the lives and safety of citizens, including the police, fire departments, and the military. Furthermore, they contribute to the redistribution of resources, including the protection of vulnerable groups and the promotion of welfare. Taxes paid by high-income earners directly serve as the financial resources for welfare systems intended for the low-income class. They also bear the costs of reducing social conflict, such as expanding health insurance benefits and supporting basic livelihood support. Paying substantial taxes fairly and without resorting to illegal tax evasion can be considered a model of law-abiding spirit. Voluntary and conscientious tax payment serves as a positive stimulus to other members of society. It forms the foundation for government-led research into core future technologies and support for promising industries. It also contributes to raising the overall level of human resources in society by strengthening the public education system. While paying taxes is a duty, granting social recognition and prestige to those who bear greater responsibilities and burdens serves as a powerful incentive to encourage the healthy growth of the community. As mentioned above, taxes are the fundamental financial resource that sustains the household. Therefore, we must respect citizens who pay high taxes. In the case of Korea, the situation was one where citizens who paid high real estate taxes were ruthlessly branded as speculators by certain political forces.

These are benefits derived from taxes paid by the wealthy. Therefore, it is the government's duty to create a social climate where those who pay a lot of taxes are respected. Currently, European societies have begun to suffer from the depletion of social welfare funds provided by governments. The internal political atmosphere, where the government threatens wealthy real estate owners with taxes and attempts to extract their money, has immediately turned into political apathy, causing political instability. The decline in President Lee Jae-myung's approval rating can be cited as a prime example of this.

Amidst this, Kim Min-seok, the new party leader elected at the Democratic Party of Korea's August 17 National Convention, [targets] the wealthy, particularly real estate owners who have paid a lot of taxes I welcome policy initiatives that create an atmosphere of respect for property owners, rather than treating them with contempt or coldness. This is healthy capitalism. I hope that the principled remarks of Kim Min-seok, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea—which advocates for fresh policies to heal the bitter pain of the cold treatment real estate owners have suffered—will not degenerate into mere populist rhetoric but will be well reflected in government policy. moonilsuk@naver.com
