Snake-faced and Snake-faced physiognomy is a style centered on "concealment and stagnation," embodying the principle of "Tao Guang Yang Hui" (韜光養晦).

[Noh Byung-han’s Physiognomy & Column] Birds flying in the sky are called "Birds" (禽), and land animals running on the ground are called "Beasts" (獸). Physiognomy is the study of physiognomy that discusses appearance by drawing parallels to the forms of these birds, beasts, and animals. While the *Ma-ui Sangseo* (Book of the Horse Doctor) cites 34 types of birds and beasts used in physiognomy, the actual number can generally be said to reach 66. Here, I would like to examine snake-faced and Snake-faced physiognomy.
Snake-faced and Snake-faced physiognomy The actual appearance, form, physique, and characteristics of the snake are characterized by a long head and a flat forehead; its eyes are red and round, yet thin and small with blue pupils and small eyebrows; its nose is long, its mouth is wide, its lips are thin, and its tongue is long; thus, its nature and disposition are fierce and venomous, as if it were venomous. Its body is long, and as it moves forward, its waist is soft and supple; it is a figure that shakes its head, lifting its face and head.

The snake appearance is likened to *Tao Guang Yang Hui* (韜光養晦), which means concealing one's talents or brilliance, quietly cultivating one's abilities in the darkness, and waiting for the right time.
If the court is entrusted with the law, it renders ruthless judgments, treating the harm inflicted upon the lives of many as an offering. Among snakes, there are those that live in herds and those that cultivate the Way; their types are not merely one or two, but diverse. However, the auspicious places and places of blessing that snakes like and welcome throughout their lives are caves, rocks, mountains, and forests, while the inauspicious and inauspicious places that snakes dislike and avoid, as well as places of misfortune and fire, are wild waters, wells, and fires. Hyeongamsanrim refers to a deep mountain range composed of caves, rocks, mountains, and forests; it signifies a natural space for seclusion away from the secular world, as well as a rugged forest rarely visited by humans. Furthermore, Yasujeonghwa refers to a place where water and fire—the most basic elements for human survival—are found in nature. By contrasting field water (*yasu*) with well water (*jeongsu*), it represents the harmony between nature and human life, signifying a place where the opposing energies of Yin and Yang—water and fire—coexist.
Among the physiognomy of birds and beasts, the snake face (*sasang*) does not merely signify a cold and damp appearance. The snake is a creature that lowers its body, remains silent, waits for an opportunity, and changes direction in an instant. Therefore, based on the characteristics of physiognomy, the snake face is also referred to as the "secretive face," "lying face," "strategic face," "cool-headed face," "opportunity-grabbing face," and "adaptable face."
The snake face is a type of person who appears quiet and gentle on the outside, but is quick-witted on the inside, prioritizes judgment over emotion, and overwhelms others with their gaze and atmosphere rather than words. Therefore, the auspicious aspect of the Snake-like appearance is one of wisdom and self-control, while the inauspicious aspect is one of strong suspicion and insidiousness.
If the Tiger-like appearance is like a breakthrough, the Snake-like appearance can be likened to infiltration. If the Lion-like appearance is domination, the Snake-like appearance can be likened to control. If the Eagle-like appearance is an observation from high altitudes, the Snake-like appearance is an observation looking for opportunity from low ground.
The types of the Snake-faced and Snake-faced individuals can be broadly divided into four categories: first, the "Strategic Type" (Strategic Appearance), which is strong in analysis and planning; second, the "Wealth Type" (Wealth Appearance), which is adept at reading the flow of money and accumulating wealth; third, the "Power Type" (Power Appearance), which reads the internal power structure of an organization and acts accordingly; and fourth, the "Artistic Type" (Art Appearance), which captivates the public with a sense of mystery and delicate sensibility. ▲ Snake-faced physiognomy is the 'Tao Guang Yang Hui' (韜光養晦) physiognomy © AI-generated image
Snake-faced physiognomy belongs to the type of physiognomy involving strategy, power, and wealth, centered on secretive lurking and strategy. For instance, it is the physiognomy of ‘deep planning and foresight’ because one possesses meticulous long-term strategies; the physiognomy of ‘planning the game from behind the scenes’ because one has the stratagem to design the game from the rear; the physiognomy of ‘subduing others by acting late’ because one’s nature is to lie in wait and subdue at the decisive moment; and the physiognomy of ‘cultivating sharpness and waiting for the right time’ because one is the type who builds strength while waiting for an opportunity. In short, the characteristic of the snake face is that of a ‘strategist who hides their abilities and waits for the right moment,’ so it can be described as the physiognomy of ‘concealing one's light and biding one's time.’
Let us liken the appearance of a snake to physiognomy and examine the characteristics of each body part. The snake is an animal with a long, narrow face, a flat head, distinct eyes, the ability to sense signs with its tongue, and to read the terrain with its entire body. In a snake-like appearance, judgment is revealed in the forehead and between the eyebrows, vigilance in the eyes, calculating ability in the nose, the ability to keep secrets in the mouth, and persistence in the jaw. Rather than clear and gentle eyes, the eyes of a snake-like face are those that observe and see through others; the mouth does not open easily; the cheekbones appear to conceal their strength inward rather than spreading excessively; and there is a strong tendency to speak little or to select only what is necessary.
Let us examine the physiognomic characteristics of the form, physiognomy, and body shape of a snake-like face. A snake-like face is characterized by a sharp and elongated overall face, and a deep gaze that lingers for a long time. The lines of the face flow thinly and elongatedly rather than being round, and the intensity of the gaze is more important than the size of the eyes. Since the essence of the Snake Physiognomy lies in "inner density" rather than "outer size," this appearance is frequently seen in people who observe quietly and accurately read the weaknesses of others, rather than those who laugh loudly or move exaggeratedly.
When viewed in terms of physical appearance, the Snake Physiognomy gives a strong impression of being flexible and elongated rather than excessively thick. People with the Snake Physiognomy often have long necklines or sharp shoulders, walk quietly, and convey emotions through their eyes and the corners of their mouths rather than large movements when speaking. Rather than the heroic type who explodes with excitement in front of the public, the Snake Physiognomy is closer to the "strategist, advisor, or negotiator" type who penetrates the inner workings of power.
The lines of the face flow thinly and elongatedly rather than being round and round, and the radiance of the eyes is more important than the size of the eyes. nbh1010@naver.com
