"Learn Traditions by Experiencing Mountain God Rituals and Sitting Gut," Daejeon Youth Intangible Cultural Play School Opens
Held at Daejeon Intangible Cultural Heritage Training Center from September to October, targeting youth in 4th grade and above
A learning space is unfolding where youth can experience the region's unique intangible cultural heritage—previously confined to textbooks—through their five senses.
The Daejeon Intangible Cultural Heritage Training Center, operated by the Daejeon Cultural Foundation, will launch the "Intangible Cultural Play School," an educational program for youth, from this coming September to October. Selected through the National Heritage Administration's "Training Center Revitalization Project" competition, this program is designed to help future generations easily understand the region's historical significance.
The program is divided into two courses: "Gods Live in Our Neighborhood," which deals with Daejeon's village beliefs, and "Musical Drama Pansori," a performance-style program. In particular, "Gods Live in Our Neighborhood," held on September 17 and 18, covers representative village rituals such as the Mountain God Rituals of Musudong and Yuchondong, the Tapje of Sandi Village in Jangdong, and the Sitting Gut. Along with expert lectures, hands-on activities such as building guardian towers and making guardian amulets await the youth.
This initiative to reinterpret traditional culture—which often remains merely a preserved artifact—through field-based experiences is expected to contribute to establishing a regional identity. Participation is open to youth groups of elementary school students in the 4th grade and above within the district, and registration opens on a first-come, first-served basis starting August 19. Each session is limited to 90 participants, and tuition is completely free.
Detailed information can be found on the Daejeon Cultural Foundation website or by calling the Daejeon Intangible Cultural Heritage Training Center at 042-632-8387. There is anticipation that this field education, which explores the region's historical roots, will serve as an opportunity to instill cultural pride in the youth.
