Gyeonggi Province Joins You for Your First Reading Experience with Picture Books and Word Play

Personalized Reading Coaching for Your Child Through ‘Reading ON Gyeonggi’

For children whose fingertips are still clumsy at turning pages, reading should be an enjoyable game before it is a subject to be learned. With this philosophy in mind, Gyeonggi Province is launching the ‘2026 Gyeonggi Children’s Reading Coaching - Reading ON Gyeonggi’ project.

This program is designed for children aged 7 to third grade—a period when their speech and writing skills are rapidly developing. Gyeonggi Province explains that reading habits formed during this time serve as the foundation for future academic learning and self-directed growth. Therefore, this program places emphasis not merely on making children ‘read’ books, but on helping them become familiar with books at their own level.

The program varies in approach depending on age. Seven-year-olds open picture books and engage in word play to exchange first greetings with stories. First graders learn basic reading activities together, tailored to the stage of adapting to school life. Second-graders learn how to find and connect necessary information within books, while third-graders learn how to organize that information and express it in their own words. In essence, the program follows the perspective of children growing up step by step.

Another noteworthy aspect is that the program takes place at 31 public libraries in Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Library. This reflects the province's commitment to reducing regional disparities, ensuring that a child's cultural experiences do not differ based on their neighborhood.

The program will be held at the Gyeonggi Library for four days on August 29 and 30, and September 5 and 6. Approximately 20 participants will be recruited for each of the four age-group teams. Detailed schedules and application methods can be found on the Gyeonggi Library website (library.kr). Yoon Myung-hee, Director of the Gyeonggi Provincial Library, stated, “Children’s reading coaching is not simply a program to make children read books, but a project that helps them encounter books and experience the joy of reading in a way that suits their age and level,” adding, “We will support the improvement of children’s literacy and the formation of healthy reading habits together with public libraries in the province.”
