Former President Kim Dae-jung, the void you left behind—politics still asks for the way!
- Kim Jung-ki, Political Columnist
Today (August 18) marks the 17th anniversary of President Kim Dae-jung's passing. Although 17 years have passed, strangely enough, when we think of the President, time seems to stand still for us. The image of us facing him in his office, the way he deeply contemplated state affairs, and the way he sometimes made decisive decisions after long silences are still vivid. It is said that even when a person leaves, the legacy they leave behind does not easily vanish. President Kim Dae-jung was exactly that kind of person.
The President left us democracy. He rebuilt the Republic of Korea amidst the turbulent waves of the foreign exchange crisis, and looking ahead to the information age, he paved the way for Korea to become an IT powerhouse. He foresaw the future of the cultural content industry early on, and even amidst the tension and confrontation between the North and South, he never gave up on the path of peace and reconciliation until the very end.
Former President Kim Dae-jung, the void you left behind—politics still asks for the way! However, the President's greatest achievements cannot be explained solely by numbers like economic growth rates or policy outcomes. The President personally demonstrated to us what politics should truly be. He proved through his life that politics must be about saving lives and giving hope to the people.
There were clear principles in the President's politics. However, he did not merely assert principles. He read reality, listened to others, and knew how to compromise if necessary for the national interest and the people. Therefore, the President's politics was not built solely on toughness. It was the power to listen, persuade, wait, and make a decision when the time was right—that was the political prowess of President Kim Dae-jung that I witnessed up close.
The President always considered people to be of the utmost importance. He possessed the discernment to recognize good people and place them in the right positions, and he listened to the very end to those whose views differed from his own. Furthermore, once he made a decision for the nation, he never wavered easily.
Whenever I see our politics today divided by conflict and unable to listen to one another, I miss the President even more. I wonder what the President would say if he were to see our politics today. I imagine he would tell us to listen to the people first. He would likely tell us to persuade others rather than making them enemies. He would likely say that politicians should fear history more than the next election. And above all, he would likely tell us to join hands for the sake of the people. The President endured countless hardships throughout his life. However, he did not let those hardships leave behind resentment. He transformed them into the power of forgiveness, reconciliation, and inclusion. That is the greatest strength of Kim Dae-jung’s politics that I remember. Therefore, I believe that today, we must not stop at merely missing the President.
We must reflect once again on why he fought for democracy for so long, why he practiced forgiveness and reconciliation, and why he worried about the future of the people and the country until his very last moment. Since the President left us, the Republic of Korea has undergone many changes.
However, there are still many challenges to overcome. In politics, strife takes precedence over the people, and conflict has deepened more than reconciliation. We have reached a reality where everyone considers the other side's words wrong and believes only their own side is right. Whenever this happens, the void left by the President is felt even more deeply. "Politics must exist for the people." This all-too-ordinary statement has, paradoxically, become the most urgent lesson for South Korean politics today. It has been 17 years since the President left us. While time has distanced the President's figure from our side, it has never taken away the spirit of democracy, peace, forgiveness, reconciliation, and national unity that he left behind.
On the contrary, as time passes, his intentions are becoming even clearer. And we must carry on the President's will, who wished to protect democracy and build a better South Korea. This is because it was the path he walked throughout his life. President Kim Dae-jung. You have left our side, but your politics still live on. The path of democracy, the path of peace, and the path of reconciliation, forgiveness, and inclusion that you walked have not yet ended. Whenever South Korean politics loses its way today, we think of you. And we ask again: What is politics for the people? What kind of person should a leader be for the country? Can we forgive each other and live well together? Perhaps the answer the President left behind was very simple.
Love the people. Defend democracy and further develop it. And do not abandon hope until the very end. Mr. President. Although 17 years have passed, you have not yet left me. On the path we walked together, I hear your voice again today. Holding that voice in my heart, I think of a better tomorrow for the Republic of Korea. Mr. President, I miss you so much. And I am still learning from you. I will live my life deeply engraving in my heart the spirit of people-centered governance you left behind: "The people are heaven."
