The Meaning of the 100th Anniversary of Liberation... “Peace and Unification on the Korean Peninsula, Our Hope and Goal”

- Columnist Hwang Heung-ryong

I reflect on the meaning of liberation and independence on August 15, 1945. What did liberation mean to us at that time? In 19 years, it will be the 100th anniversary of liberation. What will the 100th anniversary of liberation mean to us in 2045? How should we welcome this centennial?

At the time of liberation in 1945, the tasks were likely to establish a government for the newly liberated nation, clear away the remnants of Japanese imperialism, and push for social reforms to eliminate feudal legacies. Although the division and occupation of the 38th parallel began simultaneously with liberation, it was accepted as a temporary and provisional measure and was not considered a division.

However, in less than a few months, it was realized that the 38th parallel was solidifying not as a temporary line of occupation, but as a line of division. Consequently, the task of establishing a unified government for North and South Korea, moving beyond the division of the two Koreas, was added.

Ultimately, as the division could not be overcome and separate governments were established in North and South Korea, the task of overcoming division and unification was added to the agenda, replacing the establishment of a unified government. Furthermore, as Syngman Rhee’s dictatorship and long-term rule began in South Korea and led to military dictatorship, democracy was also added.

Therefore, the meaning of liberation has evolved from the establishment of a government, the liquidation of pro-Japanese remnants, and feudal reform to the establishment of a unified government, the liquidation of pro-Japanese remnants, and feudal reform, and has continued for a long time to the overcoming of division and unification, the liquidation of pro-Japanese remnants, social reform, and democracy.

In the early stages, the urgent task was to liquidate the remnants of pro-Japanese collaboration and reform the feudal system based on the establishment of a government; subsequently, the restoration of democracy emerged as the most important task. Currently, while democratization has progressed significantly and economic development has been achieved, various social problems are coming to the forefront, leading to an emphasis on socio-economic reform. Moreover, this is a time when peace is more urgently needed than unification.

Therefore, the 100th anniversary of liberation in 2045 presents us with the task of overcoming division based on peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the task of resolving social issues such as regional decline, the climate crisis, and socioeconomic polarization. The spirit of the 100th anniversary of liberation should be to transform the Korean Peninsula into a peaceful state free from war and confrontation, and to build a happy nation filled with social justice, welfare, solidarity, and cooperation.

To achieve this, politics must undergo a proper transformation, civil society must be further revitalized, and all forms of vested interests in society must be dismantled. Looking at the state of our politics over the past few years, it has been confirmed once again that, regardless of party affiliation, we still fall far short of the required standards.
