“Your account is involved in a crime.” You must be suspicious of that call first.

“This is the ○○ Police Station. It has been confirmed that an account in your name has been used for a crime.”

Anyone would be momentarily flustered if they received a call like this while going about their ordinary daily life.

This is especially true for someone who has never had to visit a police station or the prosecutor's office in their life.

This is precisely the moment that voice phishing criminal organizations target.

Voice phishing involving impersonation of investigative agencies is a representative tactic where criminals impersonate police officers or prosecutors to instill anxiety in victims that they are involved in a crime, and then steal their money.

In some cases, the criminals know the victim's name or some personal information.

From the victim's perspective, it is difficult to easily suspect someone who provides accurate personal information.

“A dummy account has been created in your name.”

“Did you sell your account to a criminal?”

“We need to verify whether you are a victim or an accomplice.”

Initially, they do not mention money.

Instead, they ask various questions as if they were conducting an actual investigation.

Once the victim becomes sufficiently anxious, they demand a transfer, claiming, “We need to verify if the money in the account is proceeds of crime,” or “You need to move the funds to a safe account.”

In some cases, they instruct the victim to withdraw cash and store it in a specific location or hand it over to officials such as Financial Supervisory Service employees.

Criminals are also adept at preventing victims from asking for help from those around them.

“This is an ongoing investigation, so you must not tell your family.”

“If you hang up the phone, it will be treated as non-cooperation with the investigation.”

Upon hearing such words, the victim cannot put the phone down and continues to follow the criminal's instructions.

There is something you must remember here.

Legitimate investigative agencies do not demand that money be sent to a specific account or instruct you to withdraw cash and hand it over to an employee, claiming they are resolving a case over the phone.

Just because the other party knows your name and personal information does not guarantee that they are an actual police officer or prosecutor.

If you receive a call impersonating an investigative agency, it is best not to try to persuade the caller or determine the veracity of the information over the phone.

First, you must hang up the phone.

Furthermore, you should verify the facts by contacting the official main number of the relevant agency, which you have confirmed yourself, rather than using the phone number provided by the caller.

In particular, if you have installed an application from an unknown source, you should not assume that your mobile phone is safe.

If possible, it is necessary to use another secure phone to verify the information with the police or a financial institution.

Voice phishing criminals are not impersonating the police.

They steal both the "trust" and "fear" that citizens hold regarding the police and the prosecution, using this for their crimes.

If you receive a call saying, "You are involved in a crime," remember one thing before you panic.

A real investigative agency would not demand that you send money to prove your innocence.

The small act of hanging up and checking again can protect your life savings.
