Beware of 'Romance Scams' Preying on Loneliness; Watch Out for 'Sweet Loan Offers' with Low Interest Rates...

-Break News Incheon  Park Sang-do Reporter

As social media and messaging apps have become part of daily life, the way we meet people and form relationships has changed significantly.

It is no longer unfamiliar to exchange daily greetings and grow close by sharing worries with someone we have never met face-to-face.

However, while social media serves as an ordinary meeting space for some, it can also become a pathway for criminals to access the hearts of their victims.

This is precisely what is known as a 'Romance Scam'.

A Romance Scam differs from simple fraud, where money is obtained through lies.

Criminals seek to win a person's heart before money.

It starts with ordinary greetings.

“How was your day?”, “Have you had your meal?”, “Talking with you puts my mind at ease.”

While daily contact and interest may seem insignificant, they can hold special meaning for those who spend a lot of time alone.

When encountering related victim cases in the field, it is notable that middle-aged individuals in their 50s and 60s are often the victims.

For those who have spent long periods alone due to various reasons—such as living apart from family, the death of a spouse, or divorce—having someone ask about their well-being and listen to their stories every day can be a greater comfort than one might expect.

In particular, among those living alone and receiving livelihood support due to financial difficulties, one can encounter cases where individuals fall victim after relying on someone they met online amidst loneliness and emotional isolation.

It is all too easy to ask them, “Why did you trust someone you haven’t even seen?”

This is because what criminals target is precisely that lonely heart.

Anyone would be suspicious if money were demanded from the very beginning. That is why romance scam criminals do not rush.

They spend days, weeks, or sometimes even longer communicating to understand the victim's daily life, family relationships, and financial situation.

Once they determine they have grown close enough, they confess their love or talk about a future together.

Then, at some point, money comes into the picture.

They share excuses such as a sudden problem with their overseas business, goods shipped to Korea being held up at customs, or urgent need for medical expenses.

Recently, one must also be wary of methods involving soliciting virtual assets or overseas investments.

They initially have the victim invest a small amount, make it appear as if profits have been generated, and then induce them to invest a larger sum.

When the victim tries to withdraw the money later, they demand additional deposits under the pretext of taxes, fees, or security deposits.

The problem is that at this stage, the criminal is no longer seen by the victim as a "stranger met online."

They come to regard the perpetrator as a lover or friend who checks on them every day and shares their lonely moments.

Therefore, even if family or acquaintances suspect fraud, the victim may end up defending the other party instead. “This person isn’t like that.”, “They treated me really well.”, “They said they would come to Korea if I helped them just this once.”

Criminals exploit this very trust.

In particular, if a financially struggling victim ends up cutting back on living expenses or borrowing money from friends to send to the perpetrator, the damage does not end with mere financial loss.

Their daily life itself can become difficult, and once they realize they have been deceived, they are left with another form of pain: a sense of betrayal and loss.

Therefore, preventing romance scams is not enough with just saying, “Don’t send money to strangers.”

Families and neighbors paying a little more attention to middle-aged and elderly people living alone can also be an important preventive measure.

If a family member you haven’t been in touch with for a while suddenly talks about a partner overseas, or if someone you met on social media tries to send money claiming to have introduced you to an investment, you need to take an interest and verify the details.

If someone you met online asks for money, it is crucial not to send it immediately, regardless of the reason.

If someone you have never met in person requests money for customs fees, medical expenses, airfare, or business funds, or recommends virtual assets or overseas investments, you should be suspicious first.

You should not blindly trust the photos, IDs, or impressive job descriptions sent by the other party.

This is because there is a possibility that they have stolen another person's photo or identity.

If you have already sent money, you should not try to resolve the situation alone out of embarrassment.

You must immediately stop any further transfers, preserve relevant records such as conversation logs with the other party, account numbers, and transfer history, and promptly seek assistance from the police or financial institutions.

Another thing we must guard against when discussing romance scams is the tendency to blame the victim.

Everyone can feel lonely.

Just because one gets older does not mean they no longer need someone's attention and love.

Criminals meticulously exploit these ordinary emotions.

Therefore, preventing romance scams requires the concern of family and neighbors just as much as the victim's vigilance.

A single warm word that arrives one day can be a great comfort to someone who has lived a lonely life for a long time. However, if they repeatedly demand money or investment at the end of that relationship, you should pause.

You do not need to send money to prove your love.

No matter how affectionately someone you met online promises a future together, when they ask for a transfer or investment, do not make the decision alone; instead, talk to your family or those around you first.

The best way to prevent crimes that prey on loneliness may ultimately be the attention of those around you, ensuring that you no longer leave that person to make decisions on their own.

Beware of ‘Sweet Loan Offers’ for Low Interest Rates...

For someone struggling with burdensome interest rates and monthly loan repayments, a message saying, “We can switch your loan to a rate much lower than your existing one,” can sound tempting.

Criminals target precisely that mindset.

Voice phishing impersonating financial institutions is a method where perpetrators impersonate bank or financial company employees to deceive victims into believing that low-interest loans or refinancing are available.

“You have been selected as a recipient of a government-supported low-interest loan.”

“You can switch your existing high-interest loan to a low-interest product.”

They initially present favorable terms. However, as the process proceeds, problems arise one by one.

“The system cannot approve the application due to an existing loan.”

“You must repay your existing loan first.”

“You must pay a penalty for violating the loan agreement.”

Ultimately, they demand money from the victim.

In some cases, they even require the victim to withdraw cash and deliver it directly to a specific employee rather than via bank transfer.

The more financially distressed a person is, the more dangerous such offers can be.

This is because the expectation of immediately reducing the monthly interest payments can lead them to accept demands they would normally have been suspicious of.

Criminals exploit the victim's desperation.

For someone in need of a loan, the most important thing may be “securing the money quickly.”

Therefore, criminals rob the victim of the time to make a decision by claiming, “This product is only available until today,” or “If you do not process it now, the approval will be cancelled.”

The more anxious you become upon hearing about a loan with favorable terms, the more you should verify the details.

Do not blindly trust loan offers received via text or phone; it is safer to verify the existence of the actual product and representative through the financial institution's official main number or a branch office.

In particular, if you are asked to send money upfront or hand over cash to an employee to receive a loan, you should strongly suspect the possibility of voice phishing.

Loans are a financial means to resolve difficult situations, not a process where you are robbed of your money first.

If someone demands money upfront while claiming to offer a "low-interest loan," you must stop.

Voice phishing exploits the desperation of financially struggling individuals as a tool for crime.

The more favorable the terms, the more realistic the way to protect your assets is to develop the habit of not rushing and verifying the details again through the financial institution.
