Why Have the People's Assets Collapsed While the Stock Market Rised?

- Columnist Jung Sung-tae

South Korean society is currently crossing the midst of a miserable catastrophe where the people's precious assets evaporate in an instant. It is an era where a financial hell exists, accompanied by the screams of countless individual investors who must endure daily while crouching behind the glamour of the KOSPI index. Historians recording this will likely single out 2026 and define it as "a strange and tragic year in which numbers deceived humanity."

The "KOSPI 5,000 Era," a campaign promise made by candidate Lee Jae-myung during the presidential election, has gone beyond mere achievement; it has displayed extreme volatility, breaking through the 9,000 mark at one point, plummeting to the 5,000 level, and then rebounding. Looking solely at the superficial index, it appears to be a great success, as it has risen significantly higher than the 3,000 level seen around the time the administration took office. However, beneath the surface lies the deep tears of blood shed by the youth and the elderly trapped in the shackles of "debt-fueled investment."

The government's message of revitalizing the stock market coincided with a strong rally driven by semiconductors, creating a series of spectacular scenes. However, the destination turned into a fireworks tragedy that soared in an instant only to vanish. Far from fostering a healthy work ethic, it has become difficult to avoid criticism that the policy environment created a situation where the public could be driven by a desire for instant riches.

A particularly problematic aspect is that the stock market was closely linked to the President's political achievements from the very beginning of his term. The rosy slogan of reaching KOSPI 5,000 was regarded not merely as an economic policy, but as a core driving force of state administration. To this end, the market atmosphere was boosted by emphasizing the protection of minority shareholders, and the stock market, bolstered by the strong performance of semiconductor companies, overheated rapidly.

In other words, critics point out that more weight was placed on embellishing the visible rise in the stock index as a political achievement than on substantial economic growth. The suspicion is that instead of taking the straightforward approach of strengthening fundamentals through normal market corrections, there was an obsession solely with the outcome of an "upward trend." This very point should serve as the starting point for viewing the current financial reality of South Korea.

Another problem lies in the fact that high-risk leverage products appeared belatedly during the process of the stock market overheating. With individual investors' risk appetite already at an extreme level, the influx of 2x leverage products on single stocks further amplified the risk of losses during a sharp market downturn. It was truly a case of adding insult to injury.

Although the government claimed to have established safeguards for high-risk products, they were insufficient to handle the market's explosive volatility. There is a strong sense that a policy environment was created that could amplify the risk of "debt-fueled investment" as individual investors' access to high-risk financial products expanded. The market was engulfed in extreme volatility, with circuit breakers and sidecars being triggered in succession.

Amidst a storming rally where the index surpassed 5,000, broke through the 9,000 mark, and headed toward 10,000, the government's messages to boost the stock market coincided with the institutional expansion of high-risk products, giving wings to the expansion of leveraged investments by individual investors. Moreover, this situation closely resembles how the President himself acted as the "leader of a stock trading room," fanning the flames rather than acting as a brake to prevent market overheating.

When the mirage finally lifted, what was revealed was the shattered souls of countless retail investors. An astronomical amount of market capitalization evaporated over the past few months. This is not merely an unrealized loss. It is the result of the future of the youth and the retirement funds of the elderly being sacrificed like offerings in a high-risk financial environment. It is a tragedy in which short-sighted government policies have left the financially vulnerable with harsh debt.

The paradox currently displayed by the stock market is painful. While the index rose enough to hit the 9,000 mark at one point, the assets of all investors did not increase in the process. On the contrary, the landscape of households groaning in agony within presents the exact opposite picture. Investors who took on excessive debt while trapped in the torturous hope of "buying low" are already driven to the brink of loan delinquency.

The most tragic aspect of this crisis lies with the individual investors who missed their selling opportunities during the market crash. Unable to repay their loans, their overdrafts reached their limits, and they collapsed helplessly before the harsh fate of forced liquidation by brokerage firms. Despite creating an institutional environment that allowed for the expansion of high-risk investments, the government appears eager to shift the blame for the consequences onto the "market."

What is the true nature of this terrible paradox currently looming over our stock market? First is the "trap of averages." This bizarre imbalance—where the accounts of the majority of retail investors are collapsing helplessly at the very center of high-risk financial products and volatile markets that the government supposedly encouraged as "expanding investment options"—is the naked truth behind the numbers game currently facing the Korean stock market. Second is the asymmetric graveyard created by leveraged ETFs. Single-stock 2x leverage products, which are institutionally permitted by financial authorities, track the daily return of the underlying asset at double the rate. The problem is that as losses accumulate, the principal itself diminishes; therefore, even if the underlying asset rebounds later, the losses are not recovered at the same rate. Furthermore, if high volatility persists, losses can become even greater due to the compounding effect.

In other words, unlike large investors who can rapidly shift the market's direction during every gap as the index plummets from the 9,000s to the 6,000s, individual investors using leverage are inevitably forced out of the market without even the time or leeway to absorb their losses. The current figures of the 6,000-point index alone cannot explain the shock to the assets and lives of individuals lost during this process.

Third is the "paradox of time." There were quite a few individual investors who, trusting the administration's message to boost the stock market, engaged in "debt-fueled investing" by borrowing not only their own assets but also loans. However, amidst the stormy market downturn, retail investors lacking the strength to endure were swept up in "forced liquidation" by brokerage firms due to insufficient collateral ratios, forcibly expelled from the market. They faced an economic death sentence of "irrecoverable" status.

Even if the KOSPI were to rise in the future, it would hold no meaning for the retail investors who had already suffered massive losses during the downturn and been forced out. The common formula that "rising indices make you rich" has become a complete fallacy in a market exposed to the extreme volatility of the Lee Jae-myung administration. Yet, it is still difficult to find any clear explanation regarding the policy errors associated with this.

Although the state should be the last line of defense protecting the assets of its citizens, the Lee Jae-myung administration has invited criticism for its "leading-style governance," placing stock market stimulation at the forefront of its national achievements. Even in this situation of massive contradiction, where the flashy stock market indicators used for external embellishment are destroying the real wealth of the people, the administration is merely scrambling to evade responsibility by blaming "market conditions."

The achievement that was so highly praised when the stock market surpassed the 9,000-point mark has now returned as a boomerang, holding the administration back. With consumption frozen and household debt exceeding critical limits, the failure of economic policy is eroding even the dynamism of the entire nation. The stock market was exploited for the sake of the administration's achievements, ultimately leading to a tragic situation where the people are shackled by chains of debt.

Moreover, the sense of loss is even deeper for the generation that poured their retirement funds into the stock market. Under the name of "investment freedom" encouraged by the government, they were completely shattered by "margin insufficient notices" and "forced liquidation" notices that flew in whenever the index plummeted. They suffered the pain of watching their remaining retirement melt away within the stock market graph. The economic foundation that was supposed to sustain the future has sunk in an instant.

This is the wreckage of a distorted asset structure left behind by the government's reckless stock market stimulus policies, as well as a deep scar left on individual investors who jumped into high-risk investments driven by optimistic expectations of a market rally. We are now vividly witnessing how policy failures, hidden behind the illusion of government stock market boosting, can devastate the lives of the people.

What the public is demanding now is not the government's excuses or a look that seems to be merely waiting for a market rebound. The priority is to thoroughly investigate whether there were any problems with policy judgments during the introduction of high-risk financial products and the stock market stimulus process, and to hold those responsible accountable if necessary. Without accountability and explanation, it will be difficult to restore trust in the collapsed financial market.

The government's duty does not lie in raising stock prices. It lies in protecting the market and investors from risks that are unbearable for the public, and in improving the people's actual lives, not merely the numbers of the stock index. No matter how high the stock market records, if the people's assets and futures are collapsing behind those numbers, it is difficult to call it a true economic achievement. This is because the glamour of numbers cannot replace the lives of the people. * Author: Jung Sung-tae (Poet/Columnist)
