1. Jangsu, A Region Where Waterways Meet History

True to its name, Jangsu is a "region where water flows for a long time." Situated in a mountainous basin surrounded by the Baekdudaegan and Geumnam-Honam Jeongmaek mountain ranges, Jangsu serves as the watershed where the waterways of the Geumgang and Seomjin Rivers diverge. Centered around Subunjae Pass, the Geumgang River flows north toward the West Sea, while a tributary of the Seomjin River flows south toward the South Sea. Amidst a unique topography where mountains and water harmonize, Jangsu has long been a gateway for the movement of people and goods.

In particular, Tteunbongsaem Spring on Mt. Sinmu is known as the source of the Geumgang River. Just as a stream originating from a small spring winds its way to form the great rivers of the Korean Peninsula, Jangsu is a land that has embraced history and culture for centuries, starting from a small mountain village.

Historically, Jangsu was a border region where Gaya, Baekje, and Silla met. Although it was long perceived as a frontier region of Baekje, the excavation of Samgori in Cheoncheon-myeon in 1995 served as a significant turning point in changing this perception. Excavations confirmed the existence of an ancient Gaya power in the Jangsu region. Subsequent investigations uncovered approximately 240 large ancient tombs, 22 beacon sites, 4 ancient mountain fortresses, and as many as 70 iron production sites.

In particular, the iron production sites distributed along the Baekdudaegan mountain range demonstrate that Jangsu played a crucial role in the production and distribution of iron by the ancient Gaya power. Furthermore, Gaya relics, including the Dongchon-ri Tomb Cluster, served as important evidence revealing the existence of an independent Gaya force in the Jangsu region. Recognizing this historical and academic value, the Jangsu Dongchon-ri Tomb Cluster was designated as Historic Site No. 552 on October 1, 2019, marking the first National Designated Cultural Heritage site in Jangsu County.

The roots of the name Jangsu were also formed within the flow of a long history. During the Three Kingdoms period, Baekje’s Upyeong-hyeon and Baekhae-gun were located here. After passing through Silla’s local administrative system, Upyeong-hyeon was reorganized into Jangsu-hyeon and the Baekhae-gun region into Janggye-hyeon in 1018 during the Goryeo Dynasty. These place names have become the foundation of Jangsu's historical identity today.

Composed of high mountains and deep valleys, Jangsu was also a gateway where people and cultures traveled. Major mountain passes such as Yuksimnyeong, Bangajae, Chijae, and Jipjae served as passages connecting the Yeongnam and Honam regions; they were also the routes of exchange for the ancient Gaya kingdom and the historical paths used by Yi Seong-gye during the late Goryeo dynasty for the Battle of Hwangsan. Ancient memories remain in mountain fortresses, beacon towers, and iron production sites, while stories of people who upheld loyalty and righteousness throughout the Joseon and modern eras have been added to the landscape.

The bus departing from Jeonju passes through Jinan and enters Jangsu. Passing the village of Bongdeok-ri in Cheoncheon-myeon, home to a zelkova tree, and traversing Janggye-myeon, it encounters roads winding through mountain valleys. Jangsu is part of the region known as "Mujinjang," along with Muju and Jinan. Although these three regions were geographically confined by mountains, they have long formed a single living sphere, maintaining a continuous connection of people and culture. Even today, based on their transportation networks and shared identity, they remain regions with significant potential for cooperation. Among the figures remembered by Jangsu, Prime Minister Hwang Hui and Nongae are the most widely known. Hwang Hui is remembered as a symbol of integrity and principle, while Nongae is remembered as a righteous figure who sacrificed her life for the country during the Imjin War. However, to understand the spirit of Jangsu, it is necessary to examine the values of ‘Virtue, Integrity, and Righteousness’ that this region has long cherished, rather than focusing solely on a few specific individuals.

Jangsu remembers these values under the names ‘Two Virtues, Three Integrity, and Five Righteousness.’ The Two Virtues refer to Bangchon Hwang Hui and the loyal subject Baek Jang. Hwang Hui was exiled to Wolgang-ri, Janggye-myeon, Jangsu-gun for opposing the dethronement of Grand Prince Yangnyeong, while Baek Jang, who served as Grand Academician during the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo, maintained his integrity in Jangsu after the fall of Goryeo, refusing to serve in the Joseon dynasty.

The Three Integrity refers to three individuals who demonstrated unwavering loyalty. The protagonist of the Tarubi, Lady Baek of Sunui-ri, took her own life, believing it to be her fault, when the horse carrying the magistrate was involved in an accident caused by a pheasant flying up in surprise at the sound of horse hooves. The loyal servant Jeong Gyeong-son defended the Jangsu Hyanggyo against the Japanese army during the Imjin War, and Nongae remains in our history as a righteous woman who embraced a Japanese general and sacrificed her life at the Chokseok Pavilion in Jinju.

The Five Righteousnesses refer to figures who dedicated themselves to their country and people, despite living in different eras. They include righteous army commanders Mun Tae-seo, Park Chun-sil, and Jeon Hae-san; the Korean language scholar Dr. Jeong In-seung; and the patriot Baek Yong-seong, who devoted himself to the independence movement. They all share the commonality of prioritizing the values of the community and the nation over their own safety.

Initially, I thought this was my first visit to Jangsu, but upon reflection, I realized that Jukrimjeongsa Temple in Beonam-myeon was a place I had already visited twice due to my connection with Venerable Beomnyun. Jukrimjeongsa is not merely a temple, but a historical space imbued with the spirit of the independence movement. Venerable Baek Yong-seong participated in the March 1st Movement as a representative of the Buddhist community and played a significant role in supporting the independence movement. Among his disciples were Patriot Yun Bong-gil and Patriot Im Cheol-ho. It is said within the Buddhist community that Venerable Yong-seong emphasized the path of action for the nation to Patriot Yun Bong-gil, and conveyed to Patriot Im Cheol-ho his intention to continue the Dharma lineage after inheriting the family line. Since then, that lineage has passed through Venerable Domun and continues to the present day with Venerable Beomnyun.

After liberation, Chairman Kim Gu paid his respects at the memorial of Venerable Yong-seong upon his return to Korea. Recalling the fact that Venerable Yong-seong consistently supported the independence movement, he expressed deep gratitude for the role played by the Buddhist community in dedicating itself to the nation's independence.

Venerable Yong-seong was a figure who, while a practitioner, did not turn a blind eye to the suffering of the country and acted for the independence and future of the nation. Furthermore, there is a view that interprets the "Beloved" mentioned in Manhae Han Yong-un's *The Silence of the Beloved* as Venerable Yong-seong. This interpretation is meaningful in that the two men lived in the same era and contemplated the nation's hardships and the task of independence together. In Jangsu, which stretches from the source of the Geum River to the traces of iron production in ancient Gaya and the spirit of the modern independence movement, I go to meet the stories of the mountains, waters, and people of Jangsu, following the traces left by those who practiced virtue, upheld integrity, and chose the righteous path.
