Chairman Chung Eui-sun, Reviewing Brazil's Future Growth, Says "Must Actively Pursue Powertrain Localization"

Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun visited the Hyundai Motor Brazil plant on the 27th (local time) to personally inspect local production and sales strategies and future growth engines.

Visiting the site as part of the Korean economic delegation's schedule linked to the President's state visit to Brazil, Chairman Chung envisions establishing Brazil as a key hub in Latin America to solidify leadership in eco-friendly and hydrogen mobility amidst the rapidly changing global automotive market.

Brazil is the world's sixth-largest automotive market with an annual volume of 2.5 million units and the world's eighth-largest automobile producer. As a resource-rich nation abundant in key minerals such as rare earth elements and graphite, it is considered a strategic location for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy supply chains.

Amidst these market conditions, Hyundai Motor sold 96,723 vehicles in the Brazilian market during the first half of this year, recording its highest first-half performance since 2019. With a market share of 7.1%, the company maintains its fifth-place ranking among brands. In particular, the locally strategic model HB20 and the compact SUV Creta are driving performance, with the Creta achieving the top spot in the SUV segment of total dealer sales in Brazil during the first half of this year. Production of the new strategic model, the i20, also began in earnest last June.

Chairman Chung first visited the Latin America Regional R&D Center located within the factory site and met with local researchers. Established in 2016, the Latin America Regional R&D Center has been strengthening its local R&D capabilities by gradually expanding its scope of work—which initially included local vehicle certification and regulatory compliance—and by increasing research personnel and enhancing development capabilities specialized for the Brazilian and Latin American markets.

At the meeting, Chairman Chung urged, “To secure sustainable mid-to-long-term business competitiveness, we must strengthen local R&D capabilities and more actively pursue the localization of powertrains.”

Subsequently, Chairman Chung moved inside the production plant and intensively inspected the production quality of the i20, which began production last June, and the Creta, the company’s flagship SUV. He also personally encouraged local employees who achieved the historic milestone of surpassing 2.5 million cumulative units in production this past March.

Chairman Chung stated, “The achievement of exceeding 2.5 million units in production in 13 years is the result of the dedication and teamwork of the employees at the Brazil plant,” adding, “Brazil is a very important market for Hyundai Motor’s global business, and I am deeply grateful for the achievements made so far.”

After touring the plant, Chairman Chung received business reports from executives and employees of the Brazil plant and the Latin America Regional Headquarters, and discussed mid-to-long-term development plans for production and sales.

Chairman Chung said, “While there are various challenges and tasks in the face of changes in Brazil’s industrial environment and a new competitive landscape, we must overcome this crisis to enable the next stage of growth and leap forward,” adding, “We will provide active support at the company-wide level to achieve even greater progress in Brazil.”

He further emphasized, “All members must value fundamentals and principles and create a culture of working together to further solidify our status as a brand trusted and loved by customers.” Hyundai Motor plans to accelerate its mid-to-long-term growth strategy to counter the low-cost offensive by Chinese manufacturers and the Brazilian government's strengthening of eco-friendly policies.

The company intends to continuously expand its SUV lineup, which is set to emerge as a core segment in the Brazilian market by 2030. Furthermore, it plans to spur the introduction of locally tailored eco-friendly vehicles by developing dedicated hybrid powertrains based on ethanol-gasoline blended fuel—Brazil's primary fuel ecosystem—and launching them early in popular vehicle segments.

In line with Brazil's National Hydrogen Program, the company plans to leverage the capabilities of its group affiliates to pioneer new mobility markets, such as hydrogen commercial vehicles and trams, identify new businesses in green hydrogen and renewable energy, and strengthen industry-academia cooperation with institutions like the University of São Paulo.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor's Brazil plant is solidifying its reputation as an outstanding corporate citizen through exemplary ESG and CSR activities in the region. It recently received certification as an Ethical Management Excellence Enterprise from the Brazilian Federal Auditorate, and has been selected as a "Great Place to Work" for nine consecutive years, as well as recording 15 consecutive years without wage negotiation disputes. In addition to this, it is contributing to sustainable social development by planting a cumulative total of 100,000 trees through the Ionic Forest campaign for the restoration of the Brazilian rainforest and operating Soriso Cidadau, a free dental care service for local children and public officials.
