충남 천안시와 아산시가 정부의 인공지능(AI) 특화 도시 조성 사업 대상지로 낙점되면서, 첨단 첨단기술과 미래 모빌리티가 융합된 자율형 미래도시로의 체질 개선에 나선다.
충남도는 국토교통부가 주관한 ‘AI 특화 시범도시’ 공모에 천안·아산 공동 제안 사업이 최종 선정되어 대한민국을 대표하는 ‘K-AI 도시’ 구축을 위한 본격적인 여정에 돌입했다고 18일 밝혔다.
AI 특화 시범도시는 인공지능 대전환(AX) 시류에 발맞춰 도시 운영 전반에 AI 기술을 녹여내는 사업이다.
교통체증, 환경오염, 안전사고 등 도민들의 삶과 직결된 각종 도시문제를 인공지능 기반으로 진단하고 해결하는 미래형 가상·실재 도시 모델을 지향한다. 이번 사업은 공공 부문이 인공지능 인프라의 뼈대를 구축하면, 민간 기업이 그 위에서 혁신 기술을 개발하고 실증하는 민관 협력 방식으로 전개된다.
이번 공모에서 천안·아산 역세권은 교통과 산업적 측면에서 최적의 입지 조건을 인정받았다. KTX와 SRT, 수도권 전철 등 촘촘한 광역 교통망을 갖춘 것은 물론 반도체,
디스플레이, 미래차 등 충남의 핵심 첨단 산업 벨트와 인접해 있다. 여기에 대학과 유관 연구기관, 스타트업 인프라가 유기적으로 얽혀 있어 AI 기술의 개발부터 실증, 시장 확산까지 원스톱으로 이어질 수 있는 생태계적 강점을 지녔다.
공간적 범위는 단계적으로 확장된다. 1단계 우선 사업 지구는 천안 불당동과 아산 배방읍·탕정면 일원을 중심으로 꾸려지며, 향후 추진될 2단계 확산 지구를 통해 천안역세권 혁신지구와 온양온천역세권까지 사업 반경을 넓혀갈 구상이다. 내년부터 오는 2030년까지 국비와 지방비, 민간 자본을 합쳐 총 6,109억 원의 대규모 재원이 단계적으로 투입된다.
프로젝트의 성패를 가를 핵심 인프라로는 ‘도시지능센터’와 ‘AI 빌리지’가 꼽힌다.
도시 운영의 두뇌가 될 ‘도시지능센터’는 도심 속 방대한 데이터를 실시간으로 수집·분석해 재난 위험이나 교통 혼잡, 인파 밀집 상황 등을 사전에 감지하는 역할을 맡는다. 가상 공간에 실제 도시를 구현하는 디지털트윈 기술을 매개로 모의 실험을 거쳐 최적의 행정 해법을 도출하게 된다.
‘AI 빌리지’는 연구자와 개발자, 일반 시민들이 함께 생활하며 신기술을 검증하는 리빙랩 공간이다. 이곳에서는 자율주행 배송 로봇, 지능형 주택 관리 및 에너지 세이빙, 차세대 스마트 보안 등 주민들이 일상에서 체감할 수 있는 AI 서비스를 실제 생활권 내부에서 시험하게 된다.
이번 컨소시엄에는 충남도와 천안·아산시를 비롯해 국내 유수의 인공지능 전문 기업, 대학, 공공 연구기관들이 대거 참여해 힘을 보탠다. 충남도는 천안·아산의 성공 모델을 도 자체 데이터허브와 연계해 고도화하는 한편, 향후 도내 다른 시·군으로 확산하는 방안도 적극 검토하고 있다.
