Blue House: "Requesting EU to Favorably Consider Securing Tariff-Free Steel Quotas... Expecting Positive Results"

The Blue House announced on the 11th (local time) that "at the Korea-EU summit on the 10th (local time), there was a request for favorable consideration of Korea, a strategic partner and FTA signatory, regarding the issue of securing a tariff-rate quota (TRQ) for iron ore."
Chief of Policy Kim Yong-bum conveyed this during a briefing at the Rome Press Center, stating, "The competitiveness of Korea's key industries, such as automobiles, shipbuilding, and construction, is underpinned by the steel industry."
He added, "If the steel industry falters, it is bound to have a chain reaction effect," and noted, "The government has been making an all-out effort to ensure fair treatment as an FTA signatory with the EU."
He further added, "Intensive negotiations regarding quota volumes took place between the Korean Minister for Trade and the EU Commissioner for Trade, and significant progress was made," noting, "While we cannot disclose details yet, we expect a favorable outcome compared to other countries." To protect its domestic steel industry, the EU will reduce the volume of tariff-free steel imports by approximately half from the current 35 million tons per year to 18.3 million tons starting July 1, while applying new tariff standards that double the current 25% tariff on excess imports to 50%.
Currently, major steel exporting countries, including South Korea, are in negotiations to secure as much tariff-free quota as possible.
