사천시에 따르면 정성수 씨는 지난 8일 사천시인재육성장학재단에 장학금 1억 원을 기탁했다.
정 씨는 어린 나이에 부모를 여의고 어려운 생활 여건 속에서 야학을 다니며 학업을 이어갔다. 그는 제때 공부하지 못한 아쉬움을 오랫동안 간직해 왔으며, 경제적 어려움으로 배움의 기회를 놓치는 학생들이 없기를 바라는 마음으로 평생 모은 재산 일부를 장학금으로 내놓았다.
정 씨는 “배우고 싶어도 배우지 못하는 설움을 누구보다 잘 안다”며 “어려운 환경에 있는 학생들이 마음껏 공부하며 훌륭한 인재로 성장하길 바라는 마음으로 기부를 결심했다”고 말했다.
박동식 이사장은 “정성수 씨의 뜻깊은 나눔에 깊이 감사드린다”며 “소중한 기탁금이 학생들의 꿈과 미래를 키우는 장학사업에 의미 있게 사용될 수 있도록 하겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편, 사천시인재육성장학재단은 지역 인재 육성과 교육 지원을 위한 장학기금을 상시 접수하고 있으며, 다양한 장학사업을 통해 지역 학생들의 학업을 지원하고 있다.
