브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 중앙선거관리위원회가 제9회 전국동시지방선거 본투표 과정에서 발생한 투표용지 부족 사태와 관련해 공식 사과했다.
허철훈 중앙선관위 사무총장은 3일 오후 9시 경기 과천시 중앙선관위 청사에서 열린 대국민 사과 및 현장 브리핑에서 "소중한 주권을 행사하기 위해 투표소를 찾아주신 국민께 불편을 드리고, 공정한 선거 관리에 대한 국민의 신뢰를 훼손한 점에 대해 책임을 통감하며 깊이 사과드린다"고 밝혔다.
허 사무총장은 "선거일 투표 과정에서 일부 투표소의 투표용지 부족으로 국민 여러분께 큰 혼란과 심려를 끼쳐 드렸다"며 "해당 사실을 인지한 즉시 투표용지가 부족한 투표소로 투표용지를 긴급 이송했다"고 설명했다.
이어 "투표소에서 대기 중인 유권자들은 투표 마감 시각이 지나더라도 정상적으로 투표할 수 있도록 조치하고 안내했다"고 덧붙였다.

선관위는 이번 사태에 대한 원인 규명과 재발 방지 대책 마련에 나서겠다고 밝혔다.
허 사무총장은 "이번 사안을 엄중하게 인식하고 있다"며 "개표가 종료되는 즉시 일부 투표소에서 투표용지가 부족했던 원인과 문제점을 정확히 파악해 재발 방지 대책을 마련하겠다"고 말했다.
선관위에 따르면 서울 송파구와 강남구, 광진구 등 6개 동의 12개 투표소에서 투표용지 부족 현상이 발생했다.
현장에서 투표용지 부족 현상이 발생하자 선관위는 공지를 통해 "이번 지방선거 투표율이 지난 선거보다 높아지면서 송파구 일부 투표소에서 준비된 투표용지가 부족한 상황이 발생했다"며 "관할 선관위가 해당 투표소로 투표용지를 긴급 이송하고 있다"고 안내했다.
또 "대기 중인 유권자는 투표 마감 시각 이후에도 정상적으로 투표할 수 있으므로 투표용지 부족으로 인해 투표가 불가능하다는 오해는 없기를 바란다"고 설명했다.
한편, 용지부족 사태가 벌어진 지역이 전통적으로 보수표가 많은 지역이라는 점에서 국민의힘은 강하게 반발했다. 국민의힘은 이번 사태와 관련 "선거 공정성을 중대하게 훼손한 심각한 사안"이라며 "선거 개표를 즉시 중단하고 선거를 연기할 것을 정식 요구한다"고 밝혔다.
