[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 호아킨 니만이 부산 아시아드CC에서 열린 LIV 골프 코리아에서 연장 접전 끝에 테일러 구치를 제압하고 초대 개인전 챔피언에 올랐다.
최종합계 12언더파로 정규 라운드를 마친 니만은 연장전에서 완벽한 두 번째 샷과 버디 퍼트를 성공시키며 LIV 골프 통산 8번째 개인전 우승을 달성했다. 우승 직후 열린 공식 기자회견에서 니만은 올해 첫 우승 소감과 경기 내용, 연장전 결정적 샷에 대한 생각을 솔직하게 밝혔다.
Q) LIV 골프 코리아 개인전 챔피언에 올랐다. 올해 첫 승을 거둔 소감은 어떤가.
A) "매우 기뻤다. 이번 우승까지 시간이 좀 걸렸다. 다시 이런 상황에 놓이게 되어 좋았다. 지난 일요일 싱가포르에서도 챔피언조에서 경기했는데, 그때를 돌아보면 우승하고 싶은 마음이 너무 간절했던 것 같았다. 너무 우승을 원하다 보니 때로는 집중력이 흐려지기도 했다. 하지만 이번 주는 내 마음을 잘 유지하고 내 자신에게 집중할 수 있었다.
구치, 브라이슨과 함께 경기하면서 우승을 만들어낼 수 있었다. 그들은 좋은 경기를 보여주었다. 정말 아름다운 날이었고 아주 즐거웠으며 매우 행복했다."
Q) LIV 골프 역사상 가장 많은 개인전 우승 기록을 보유하게 됐다. 우승이 익숙해지는가, 아니면 매번 특별한가.
A) "항상 마지막 우승이 가장 감격스러웠다. 앞으로도 늘 그럴 것 같았고 갈수록 더 좋아지는 것 같았다. 2025년을 돌아보면 그때는 우승이 너무 쉽게 느껴졌다. 그냥 자연스럽게 우승이 일어나는 것 같았고 원래 그래야 하는 것처럼 느껴졌다. 하지만 최근에는 모든 것을 너무 억지로 쥐어짜내려고 했던 것 같았다. 이번에는 그냥 상황이 흘러가는 대로 내버려 두었다. 나 자신을 믿고 루틴을 지키며 그저 쇼의 일부가 되려고 했다. 필드 위에서 정말 재미있었다.
다시 우승하는 것이 정말 즐거웠다. 나는 이 게임을 사랑했다. 오늘 라운드, 특히 백나인을 돌아보면 골프에 대한 큰 열정을 느꼈다. 골프는 어떻게 발전해야 하는지 모든 것을 가르쳐주는 스포츠였다. 항상 계속 배우게 됐다. 어떤 홀에서는 위기에 처하더라도 다음 홀에서 영웅적인 샷을 날려 이글이나 버디를 잡을 수도 있었다. 늘 새롭고 다른 일이 일어났다.
앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지 모르는 상황에서 매 순간 100% 전념해야 한다는 도전이 골프를 최고의 게임으로 만들었다. 그래서 이 게임과 LIV, 그리고 내 주변 사람들에게 모두 감사했다. 아내와 가족들은 내가 하는 일을 계속 지원해줬다.

항상 더 나아지기 위해 최선을 다할 것이고 더 많은 것을 성취하고 대회에서 우승하며 골프를 발전시키고 싶었다. 나에게 모든 것을 준 고국 칠레에도 보답하고 싶었다. 고향 칠레에서 친구들과 처음 골프를 시작했고 이 게임을 하며 자라는 것이 정말 즐거웠다. 나중에 아이를 갖게 된다면 내가 즐기는 것처럼 내 아이들도 이 게임을 즐길 수 있기를 바랐다. 정말 멋진 게임이라고 생각했다."
Q) 최종 라운드 초반부터 좋은 흐름을 이어갔다. 오늘 경기를 전체적으로 돌아본다면.
A) "그렇게 좋았던 것만은 아니었다. 사실 첫 몇 개 홀에서는 고전했다. 하지만 결과적으로는 좋은 하루였다. 초반에 어렵게 시작한 것이 오히려 압박감을 덜어내는 데 도움이 됐다.
2번 홀에서 5피트짜리 파 퍼트와 7피트짜리 파 퍼트를 성공시켰고, 3번 홀에서는 그린을 놓치면서도 끈질기게 버텨냈다. 무너지지 않고 버틴 것이 주효했다. 그렇게 파 세이브를 해내면서 자신감이 생겼고 본격적인 승부를 펼칠 준비가 됐다. 이후 4번 홀에서 좋은 버디를 잡았고 6번, 7번, 8번 홀까지 아주 좋은 흐름을 이어갔다. 훌륭한 샷과 멋진 티샷을 날렸다고 생각했다.
오늘 구치 역시 엄청난 골프를 보여주었기에 좋은 하루였다. 구치는 정말 좋은 선수였다. 멕시코 나우칼판에서 열린 회원 초청 경기에서 구치가 우리를 이겼다고 계속 자랑을 했는데, 당시 구치의 파트너가 핸디캡이 엄청 높은 사람이었기 때문에 사실은 그 파트너가 이긴 것이라고 말해주었다. 아무튼 정말 좋은 친구였고 오늘 함께 즐겁게 플레이했다.
지난 이틀 동안 스콧 빈센트와 함께 경기한 것도 좋았다. 빈센트는 선수로서 엄청나게 성장했다. 연습하는 모습을 보면 항상 체육관이나 연습장, 퍼팅 그린에 가장 먼저 나타나고 가장 늦게 떠나는 선수였다. 그런 사람들과 함께 있으면 늘 좋았다.

이번 주 좋은 경기를 보여준 스콧에게도 축하를 전하고 싶었다. 그는 2024년 LIV를 떠나 아시안 투어를 거쳐 2026년 다시 LIV로 돌아왔는데 이제 완벽히 준비가 된 훌륭한 선수이자 좋은 친구였다."
Q) 백나인에서 가장 중요했던 장면은 무엇이었나.
A) "후반전은 모든 홀이 다 중요했다. 13번 홀에서의 파 세이브는 아주 훌륭했다. 아이언 샷이 마음에 들지 않았기 때문이다. 사실 9번 홀 이후로는 아이언 스윙이 좋지 않았다. 테이크어웨이를 할 때 리듬이 깨지면서 템포가 너무 빨라졌다. 그 결과 전체적으로 너무 급해졌다.
13번 홀 스윙은 좋지 않았지만 멋진 업앤다운으로 버텨냈다. 이어진 14번 홀에서는 아주 아름다운 티샷을 날렸다. 우리 세 명 모두에게 버디 기회가 있었다. 구치가 퍼트를 놓친 후 나에게 아주 좋은 기회가 왔다. 약간 오르막 라인의 어렵지 않은 퍼트였는데 힘 조절이 살짝 부족해서 공이 홀컵에 미치지 못했다.
15번 홀에서는 좋은 티샷이 필요했고 이번 주 통틀어 최고의 드라이버 샷을 쳤다. 핀 앞쪽에 맞추기 딱 좋은 거리를 남겨두고 핀 앞 3~5m 지점에 떨어뜨리려 했는데 런이 조금 길게 발생했다. 최고의 스윙은 아니었고 칩샷도 최상은 아니었지만 결국 파를 잡아냈다. 구치 역시 멋진 퍼트로 파를 지켜냈다.
16번 홀에서는 구치가 멋진 퍼트로 버디를 잡았다. 사실 내 티샷이 워낙 좋았기 때문에 16번 홀은 내 홀이 될 줄 알았다. 하지만 구치는 먼 거리에서 환상적인 퍼트를 성공시켰고 반대로 나는 버디를 놓쳤다.
그래서 정말 매 홀이 매치플레이 같았다. 스콧 빈센트도 치고 올라올 수 있다고 생각했는데 15번 홀 즈음 전광판을 보니 이미 17번 홀에서 11언더파로 경기를 마친 상태였다. 결국 우승 경쟁은 나와 구치의 싸움이라는 것을 알게 됐고 모든 샷이 매치플레이처럼 긴장감 넘쳤다."
Q) 연장전에서 보여준 두 번째 샷은 완벽에 가까웠다. 엄청난 압박감 속에서 어떻게 그런 샷을 할 수 있었나.
A) "그 상황에서 느끼는 감정을 완벽하게 설명하기는 어려웠다. 하지만 내 인생 최고의 기분 중 하나였다.
우리는 매일 아침 일찍 일어나 웨지샷과 드라이버샷, 퍼팅 연습을 반복했다. 더 나아지기 위해서였다. 그렇게 연습하는 이유는 연장전 같은 결정적인 순간이 왔을 때 스스로 해낼 수 있다는 믿음을 갖기 위해서였다.

우리가 연습했던 과정과 느꼈던 감각을 믿고 샷에 완전히 몰입했다. 이 압박감을 즐기는 것, 그리고 이 샷을 성공시키면 우승한다는 사실을 아는 것은 정말 짜릿했다. 어릴 때부터 늘 꿈꿔왔던 순간이었다.
마지막 샷을 날리고 우승 확정 퍼트를 성공시키는 장면은 정말 믿기지 않을 정도로 멋진 감정이었다. 비록 이 기분은 금방 지나가겠지만, 당장 다음 주에 또 한 번 이런 기회를 가질 수 있다는 상상만으로도 행복했다."

Joaquin Niemann defeated Taylor Gooch in a dramatic playoff at LIV Golf Korea held at Busan Asiad Country Club, claiming the inaugural individual championship title.
After finishing regulation tied at 12-under-par, Niemann sealed his eighth LIV Golf individual victory with a brilliant approach shot and a birdie putt in the playoff. Speaking at the official post-round press conference, Niemann reflected on his first win of the 2026 season, his performance throughout the tournament, and the decisive shot that secured the title.
Q) You are the LIV Golf Korea individual champion. How does it feel to earn your first victory of the season?
A) Joaquin Niemann: "I’m very happy. It took a little while to get this win, so it feels great to be back in this position.
I was in the final group last Sunday in Singapore, and looking back, I think I wanted to win too badly. When you want something that much, sometimes it can affect your focus. This week, though, I was able to keep my emotions under control and stay focused on myself.
Being able to compete alongside Gooch and Bryson and come away with the win was special. They played great golf. It was a beautiful day, a lot of fun, and I’m extremely happy."
Q) You now hold the record for the most individual victories in LIV Golf history. Do wins ever become routine, or is each one still special?
A)Joaquin Niemann: "The most recent win is always the most emotional one. I think it will always be that way, and somehow it keeps getting better.
When I look back at 2025, winning felt almost too easy at times. It seemed like victories just happened naturally and that was how things were supposed to be. Recently, though, I think I was trying too hard to force everything. This week, I simply let things happen. I trusted myself, stuck to my routine, and tried to be part of the show. I had a lot of fun out there.
Winning again feels incredible. I love this game. Looking back at today's round, especially the back nine, I felt a tremendous passion for golf. Golf teaches you everything about how to improve. You're always learning. One hole you might be in trouble, and the next you can hit a heroic shot and make an eagle or a birdie. Something different is always happening.
That challenge of being fully committed to every moment, never knowing what will happen next, is what makes golf the greatest game. I'm grateful for this game, for LIV, and for everyone around me. My wife and my family continue to support what I do.
I'll keep doing everything I can to get better. I want to achieve more, win more tournaments, and help grow the game. I also want to give back to Chile, the country that gave me everything. I started playing golf with my friends back home in Chile, and growing up with this game was incredibly enjoyable. If I have children one day, I hope they can enjoy this game as much as I do. It's truly a wonderful game."
Q) You got off to a strong start in the final round. How would you assess your overall performance today?
A) Joaquin Niemann: "It wasn't as smooth as it may have looked. I actually struggled during the first few holes. But in the end, it turned out to be a very good day. Starting off with some difficulties helped take some pressure off me.
I made a five-foot par putt and a seven-foot par putt on No. 2, and on No. 3 I missed the green but managed to hang in there. Not falling apart early was very important.
Making those par saves gave me confidence and helped me get ready for the real battle. Then I made a nice birdie on No. 4 and carried that momentum through Nos. 6, 7 and 8. I hit some excellent shots and drove the ball really well.
Gooch also played incredible golf today, so it made for a great day overall. He's a really good player. I was laughing earlier because he keeps reminding us that he beat us in a member-guest event in Naucalpan, Mexico. But his partner had an extremely high handicap, so I told him it was actually the partner who won, not him.
In any case, he's a great friend and it was a lot of fun playing with him today. I also enjoyed playing with Scott Vincent over the last two days. He has grown tremendously as a player. Whenever you see him, he's the first one at the gym, the practice range, or the putting green, and the last one to leave. It's always great being around people like that.
I want to congratulate Scott on the great week he had. He was with LIV in 2024, went back to the Asian Tour, and returned to LIV in 2026. Now he's completely ready. He's a fantastic player and a great friend, and it was nice spending time with him."
Q) Looking back at the back nine, was there a particular moment that proved most important?
A) Joaquin Niemann: "Every hole on the back nine felt important. The par save on No. 13 was huge because I didn't like the iron shot I hit there. In fact, after the ninth hole, my iron swing wasn't very good. My rhythm got out of sync during the takeaway, my tempo sped up too much, and everything started feeling rushed.
The swing on No. 13 wasn't good, but I managed to make a great up-and-down and save par. Then on No. 14, I hit a beautiful tee shot. All three of us had birdie opportunities. After Gooch missed his putt, I had a really good chance. It was a slightly uphill putt that wasn't overly difficult, but I left it just short of the hole.
On No. 15, I needed a good tee shot, and I hit the best driver swing of the entire week. I was trying to land the ball three to five meters short of the pin, but it released a little farther than expected. It wasn't my best swing afterward and the chip wasn't perfect either, but I still managed to make par. Gooch also made a great putt to save par and keep things going.
Then on No. 16, Gooch made an incredible birdie putt. I honestly thought that hole was mine because I had hit such a good tee shot. Gooch was a long way away, but he rolled in a fantastic putt, while I missed my birdie chance.
From that point on, every hole felt like match play. I thought Scott Vincent might still have a chance to make a run, but around the 15th hole I looked at the leaderboard and saw he had already finished at 11-under through 17 holes. At that point, I knew the tournament was going to come down to me and Gooch. Every shot felt like match play."
Q) Your approach shot in the playoff was nearly perfect. How were you able to execute under such intense pressure?
A) Joaquin Niemann: "It's hard to fully describe what that felt like, but it was one of the best feelings of my life. Every morning we wake up early and practice wedge shots, driver shots, and putting. We work hard every day to improve. The reason we put in all that work is so that when a decisive moment like a playoff arrives, we know we can rely on ourselves.
I trusted the work I had done, trusted the feelings I had developed through practice, and committed completely to the shot. Enjoying that pressure and knowing that if I pulled off the shot I could win the tournament was an incredible feeling. It's the kind of moment I've dreamed about since I was a kid.
Hitting the final shot and making the winning putt was an unbelievable experience. The feeling doesn't last very long, but just thinking that I could have another opportunity like that next week already makes me happy."
