[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 브라이슨 디섐보가 이끄는 크러셔스 GC가 폴 케이시의 부상 공백을 극복하고 LIV 골프 역사에 새로운 이정표를 세웠다.
크러셔스 GC는 31일 부산 기장군 아시아드 컨트리클럽에서 열린 LIV 골프 코리아 최종라운드에서 최종 합계 23언더파를 기록하며 OKGC를 3타 차로 따돌리고 우승 트로피를 들어 올렸다. 지난해 인천 대회에 이어 한국에서 열린 LIV 골프 대회에서 2년 연속 우승을 차지하며 타이틀 방어에 성공했다.
이번 우승으로 크러셔스 GC는 정규시즌 통산 10번째 팀 우승을 달성하며 리전 13 GC와 4에이시스 GC를 제치고 LIV 골프 역사상 가장 많은 팀 우승을 기록한 단독 선두 팀으로 올라섰다. 특히 핵심 멤버 폴 케이시가 손목 부상으로 결장한 상황에서 거둔 우승이라는 점에서 의미를 더했다.
우승팀 기자회견에는 브라이슨 디섐보, 찰스 하월 3세, 아니르반 라히리, 트래비스 스마이스가 참석해 우승 소감과 대회 뒷이야기를 전했다.
Q) 이번 우승으로 정규시즌 통산 10번째 팀 우승을 달성했다. LIV 골프 역사상 가장 많은 팀 우승 기록인데 약 20%의 우승률을 기록하고 있다는 사실을 어떻게 받아들이고 있나.
A) 브라이슨 디섐보 : 솔직히 어떻게 받아들여야 할지 잘 모르겠다. 우리가 처음으로 이런 기록을 세우고 있다는 것이 어떤 의미인지도 아직 실감이 나지 않는다. 다만 지금 이 자리에 있는 선수들에게 정말 감사할 뿐이다. 특히 이번 주 훌륭한 활약을 펼쳐준 트래비스에게도 고맙다. 또 손목 부상으로 함께하지 못한 폴 케이시도 생각난다. 그가 있었으면 좋았겠지만 트래비스가 완벽하게 그 역할을 해줬다. 결국 내가 느끼는 것은 감사함이다. 훌륭한 팀원들과 함께하고 있고 모두가 팀을 최고의 팀으로 만들기 위해 노력하고 있다.

Q) 아니르반, 팀에 합류했을 때 몇 년 뒤 10개의 우승 트로피를 들어 올릴 것으로 예상했나.
A) 아니르반 라히리 : 바라기는 했지만 기대한다고 해서 저절로 얻어지는 것은 아니다. 이곳에서는 모든 우승을 직접 쟁취해야 한다. 우리도 그동안 아쉬운 순간들을 많이 겪었다. 개인전이든 팀전이든 우승할 수 있었던 기회를 놓친 적도 많았다. 브라이슨 말처럼 한 주의 끝에 시상대 가장 높은 곳에 서게 되면 감사한 마음뿐이다. 그래서 우리는 매주 자신과 팀을 위해 최고의 모습을 보여주려고 노력한다.
Q) 찰스, 팀 우승 경험이 많아졌는데 세리머니도 발전했나.
A) 찰스 하월 3세 : 아니다. 처음이나 지금이나 비슷하다. 팀으로 우승하는 건 정말 특별하다. 경기 중에는 개인전과는 또 다른 압박감이 있다. 내 자신을 실망시키는 것은 괜찮지만 이 팀원들을 실망시키고 싶지는 않다. 그게 LIV 골프 팀 경기의 가장 멋진 부분 중 하나다. 이번 주 트래비스가 보여준 경기력도 대단했다. 팀을 위해 경기하는 부담감을 모두가 느끼지만 그 과정이 정말 특별하다.
Q) 트래비스, 리저브 선수로 출전해 우승 트로피를 들어 올린 두 번째 선수가 됐다. 이번 주는 어떤 느낌이었나.
A) 트래비스 스마이스 : 정말 정신없는 한 주였다. 주말에는 시드니에서 친구들과 시간을 보내고 있었는데 평소 잘 하지 않는 파티도 해서 숙취가 있었다. 일요일에 리저브 선수로 호출받고 바로 비행기를 탔다. 화요일에 도착했고 수요일에는 비 오는 가운데 프로암 9홀을 돌았다. 그때 브라이슨이 이번 주 너를 선택했다고 말했는데 나는 단순히 누군가 빠질 경우를 대비한 대기 선수인 줄 알았다.
당시에는 폴 케이시의 손목 부상 소식도 몰랐다. 그래서 브라이슨이 출전을 알려줬는데도 대수롭지 않게 지나쳤다. 한동안 내가 정말 출전하는 건지 몰라서 미안한 마음도 들었다. 정말 정신없는 한 주였고 엄청 긴장했다. 찰스도 긴장했다고 하는데 나는 얼마나 더 긴장했겠나.
팀에 피해를 주는 선수가 되고 싶지 않았다. 지금은 정말 행복하다. 나 자신도 자랑스럽고 팀원들도 자랑스럽다. 첫 주부터 이렇게 좋은 경험을 할 수 있어서 더할 나위 없이 좋았다. 사실 나는 LIV 출범 당시 크러셔스의 원년 멤버 중 한 명이었다. 그때는 피터 유라인이 주장이었고 팀은 준우승했는데 이번에는 우승했다. 뭔가 특별한 인연이 있는 것 같다.
Q) 이번 주 팀 분위기는 어땠나. 특히 트래비스의 헤어스타일이 화제가 됐는데.
트래비스 스마이스:감사합니다. (웃음)
브라이슨 디섐보:지금 머리 길이가 얼마나 되지?
트래비스 스마이스:거의 가슴까지 옵니다. (머리를 풀어 보이며)
브라이슨 디섐보:세상에, 완전 골디락스네.
A) 아니르반 라히리 : 질문에 답하자면 팀 분위기는 평소와 같았다. 이번 주처럼 어려운 코스가 우리에게는 오히려 도움이 된다고 생각한다. 길이만 긴 코스가 아니라 선수들을 시험하는 코스였고 우승 스코어도 20언더파 이상까지 내려가지 않았다. 우리 팀은 모두 끈질기게 버티는 스타일의 선수들이다. 트래비스도 이번 주 정확히 그런 모습을 보여줬다. 힘든 코스일수록 우리는 더 강해진다고 생각한다.
Q) 브라이슨, 첫날 10홀 동안 6언더파를 기록했지만 이후에는 다소 주춤했다. 이번 주를 어떻게 평가하나.
A) 브라이슨 디섐보 : 맞다. 완전히 다른 세상으로 가버린 느낌이었다. 첫 라운드 초반에는 스윙이 완벽하게 맞아떨어졌다. 그런데 이후에는 타이밍이 흐트러지기 시작했고 손이 너무 앞서 나가는 느낌이 들었다. 그 상태가 다음 두 라운드 동안 계속됐고 정말 답답했다. 연습장에서 오랜 시간을 보내며 해결책을 찾으려 했고 어젯밤에는 AI와도 많은 대화를 나눴다.
클럽이 자연스럽게 돌아가게 만드는 물리적 원리가 무엇인지, 그립 압력과 긴장도가 어떤 영향을 미치는지 계속 분석했다. 오늘은 손에 힘을 조금 빼고 나왔는데 훨씬 좋은 느낌이었다. 클럽 페이스를 더 자연스럽게 닫을 수 있었고 이후에는 공이 정말 잘 맞기 시작했다. 아직 웨지 샷이 오른쪽으로 밀리는 문제는 남아 있지만 전반적으로는 올바른 방향으로 가고 있다고 생각한다.

Q) 어젯밤 어두워진 뒤에도 연습장에 있었던 모습이 목격됐다. 그때 무슨 작업을 하고 있었나.
A) 브라이슨 디섐보 : 솔직히 말하면 클럽을 땅에 내리치면서 답을 찾으려고 했다. 정말 답답했다. 연습장에서는 결국 해결하지 못했고 숙소로 돌아가 Gemini와 대화를 나눴다. 왜 클럽이 자연스럽게 돌아가지 않는지, 어떻게 하면 힘을 빼고 스윙할 수 있는지 계속 분석했다. 결국 밤늦게 깨달은 건 그립 압력을 줄이고 클럽이 자연스럽게 움직이도록 놔둬야 한다는 것이었다. 아직도 완벽한 답을 찾은 것은 아니다. 계속 해결해 나가는 과정에 있다.

Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC overcame the absence of injured teammate Paul Casey to make LIV Golf history.
The Crushers captured the team title at LIV Golf Korea on Saturday at Asiad Country Club in Busan, South Korea, finishing at 23-under par and defeating Smash GC by three shots. The victory marked their second consecutive LIV Golf win in Korea after also winning last year’s event in Incheon.
With the win, Crushers GC secured their 10th regular-season team title, surpassing Legion XIII and 4Aces GC to become the winningest team in LIV Golf history. The achievement was especially meaningful given that key team member Paul Casey was sidelined with a wrist injury.
DeChambeau, Charles Howell III, Anirban Lahiri, and reserve player Travis Smyth spoke to the media following the victory.
Q: This is your 10th regular-season team victory, the most in LIV Golf history. How do you view the fact that you've won roughly 20% of all LIV team events?
Bryson DeChambeau: Honestly, I’m not really sure how to process it yet. I don’t even know what it means to be the first team to reach a milestone like this. More than anything, I’m just grateful for the guys sitting here with me. I’m especially thankful for Travis and the incredible job he did this week. I’m also thinking about Paul Casey. We obviously wish he could have been here, but Travis stepped in and filled that role perfectly.
At the end of the day, the feeling is simply gratitude. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by great teammates, and everyone on this team is committed to making us the best team we can possibly be.
Q: Anirban, when you joined the team, did you ever imagine you’d be holding 10 team trophies a few years later?
Anirban Lahiri: I hoped so, but hoping for something and actually achieving it are two very different things. Nothing comes easy out here. Every win has to be earned.
We’ve had our share of disappointments along the way. There have been tournaments—both individually and as a team—where we let opportunities slip away. Like Bryson said, when you find yourself standing on top of the podium at the end of the week, all you feel is gratitude. That’s why we show up every week determined to give our best for ourselves and for the team.
Q: Charles, after so many team victories, have the celebrations improved?
Charles Howell III: Not really. They’re pretty much the same as they’ve always been. Winning as a team is incredibly special. During the competition, there’s a different kind of pressure compared to individual golf. I can live with disappointing myself, but I don’t want to disappoint these guys. That’s one of the coolest aspects of LIV Golf’s team format.
What Travis accomplished this week was remarkable. We all feel the responsibility that comes with playing for the team, and that’s what makes these moments so meaningful.
Q: Travis, you became only the second reserve player to win a team trophy. What was this week like for you?
Travis Smyth: It was absolute chaos. Last weekend, I was back in Sydney hanging out with friends. I even went to a party, which isn’t really my thing, and I was dealing with a bit of a hangover. Then on Sunday, I got the call as a reserve player and immediately jumped on a flight.
I arrived on Tuesday and played nine holes in the rain during the pro-am on Wednesday. That’s when Bryson told me he’d selected me for the week. At first, I thought he just meant I was the standby player in case someone couldn’t go. I didn’t even know about Paul’s wrist injury at the time.
So when Bryson told me I was playing, I didn’t really think much of it. For a while, I honestly wasn’t sure whether I was actually in the lineup. Looking back, I almost feel bad for not realizing it sooner.
It was a crazy week, and I was incredibly nervous. Charles said he felt pressure—well, imagine how I felt. The last thing I wanted was to be the guy who let the team down.
Right now, I’m just incredibly happy. I’m proud of myself, proud of the team, and grateful to have had such an amazing experience in my very first week.
Interestingly, I was actually one of the original Crushers members when LIV first launched. Back then, Peter Uihlein was the captain, and we finished second. This time, we won. It feels like there’s some kind of special connection there.
Q: What was the atmosphere like within the team this week? Also, Travis’ hair seemed to attract a lot of attention.
Travis Smyth: Thank you. (Laughs)
Bryson DeChambeau: How long is it now?
Travis Smyth: Almost down to my chest. (Lets his hair down.)
Bryson DeChambeau: Good grief. You look like Goldilocks.
Anirban Lahiri: To answer the question, the team atmosphere was pretty much the same as always. I actually think difficult golf courses suit us. This wasn’t just a long golf course—it was a course that truly tested players. Even the winning score didn’t get much beyond 20-under.
All of us on this team are grinders. We embrace difficult conditions, and Travis embodied that perfectly this week. The tougher the challenge, the stronger we seem to become.
Q: Bryson, you were six under through your first 10 holes on Thursday, but things slowed down after that. How would you evaluate your week?
Bryson DeChambeau: Yeah, it felt like I entered a completely different world after that start.
Early in the first round, my swing was perfectly synchronized. Then the timing gradually got off, and it felt like my hands were getting too far ahead. That issue lingered throughout the next two rounds, and it was incredibly frustrating.
I spent a lot of time on the range trying to solve it, and last night I even had several conversations with AI. I was analyzing the physics behind how the club naturally rotates through impact, how grip pressure affects clubface control, and how tension influences movement.
Today, I loosened my grip pressure a bit, and everything felt much better. The clubface was able to close more naturally, and I started striking the ball really well again. I still have some wedge shots leaking to the right, but overall I feel like I’m moving in the right direction.
Q: People saw you practicing after dark last night. What were you working on?
Bryson DeChambeau: Honestly, I was beating balls into the ground trying to find answers. I was really frustrated.
I never fully figured it out on the range, so I went back to my hotel room and started talking with Gemini. We discussed why the club wasn’t naturally rotating, what might be causing the issue, and how I could swing with less tension.
Eventually, late in the evening, I realized I needed to reduce my grip pressure and allow the club to move more freely. I’m still searching for the perfect solution, and I haven’t completely solved it yet. It’s an ongoing process, but I feel like I’m getting closer.
