웅진 백제의 부흥을 이끈 무령왕의 찬란한 대서사시가 감각적인 창작 뮤지컬로 재탄생해 관객들을 찾아온다.
올해 2월 문을 연 공주 백제문화전당은 오는 5월 22일부터 6월 28일까지 전당 내 고마홀에서 창작 뮤지컬 ‘더킹: 무령(THE KING MURYEONG)’을 개최한다고 밝혔다.
이번 공연은 앞서 선보인 댄스컬 ‘비트인더미러빔’과 가족극 ‘왕관을 찾아서’에 이어 백제문화전당이 야심 차게 준비한 세 번째 백제 역사 기반 콘텐츠다.
세계문화유산의 도시 공주에서 펼쳐지는 이번 무대는 혼란과 위기를 극복하고 강성한 백제를 건설했던 무령왕의 삶을 입체적으로 조명하며 현대인들에게 시대를 초월한 깊은 감동을 전할 것으로 보인다.
이번 공연에서 가장 눈길을 끄는 대목은 첨단 무대 기술의 도입이다. 충남 지역 최초로 도입되는 ‘360도 회전 객석’과 무대 3면을 가득 채우는 ‘입체 영상 맵핑’ 기술이 결합해 관객들에게 이색적인 경험을 선사한다.
작품의 전개와 무령왕의 역동적인 서사에 맞춰 객석이 유기적으로 회전하고, 3면 영상이 연동되면서 관객들은 마치 웅진 백제 시대의 역사적 현장 한가운데에 서 있는 듯한 압도적인 몰입감과 생생한 현장감을 만끽할 수 있다.
제작진과 배우들의 라인업도 탄탄하다. 공연 제작사 에이치제이컬쳐(HJ Culture)의 한승원 예술감독과 정찬수 연출가가 의기투합해 작품의 완성도를 높였다.
백제의 중흥기 중심에 선 주인공 '무령왕' 역에는 이현재 배우가 낙점됐으며, 그의 든든한 동반자인 '무령왕비' 역은 장유정 배우가 맡아 호흡을 맞춘다.
극의 전개를 돕고 활력을 불어넣을 감초 캐릭터 '진묘수' 역에는 박두희 배우가 출연해 극을 이끌 예정이다. 여기에 청룡·백호·주작·현무 등 사신(四神) 캐릭터가 무령왕의 부활과 백제 재건을 돕는 조력자로 등장해 극에 극적인 판타지적 재미를 더한다.
개관 이후 지역의 역사와 문화 자산을 적극적으로 활용한 다채로운 콘텐츠를 연속해서 선보이고 있는 백제문화전당은 복합문화공간을 넘어 지역의 핵심 문화예술 거점으로 급부상하고 있다.
김지광 공주문화관광재단 대표이사는 “백제문화전당은 역사를 단순히 박제된 전시로만 관람하는 곳이 아니라, 공연과 예술을 통해 과거가 오늘날에 살아 숨 쉬게 하는 창작의 산실이 되어야 한다”며 “앞으로도 백제의 역사적 가치를 담아낸 독창적인 공연과 전시를 지속해서 기획하고 확산해 나가겠다”고 전했다.
