코미디가 아닐 수 없다. 야구 경기에서 상대 타선이 우리 편 투수를 응원하다고 생각해보자. 그것도 조롱 섞인 박수와 함께 말이다. 황당하지만 현실이다. 지금 장동혁을 향한 정청래와 김어준의 반응이 딱 그렇다. 장동혁이 “민주당의 전략자산” 이라고 한다. 희대의 코미디다.
원래 당대표는 상대 진영이 가장 두려워해야 정상이다. 그런데 상대편 핵심 인사들이 “잘 버텨달라”고 공개 응원을 한다? 이쯤 되면 전투가 아니라 예능이다. 생각해보라. 투수가 얼마나 무능하면 상대 타선이 그 투수를 응원할까? 웃고 보는 예능은 그렇다 치자.
하지만 정치는 그게 아닐 테다. 정치 공학적으로 보면 이는 일종의 ‘묵시적 협력’ 관계를 보여준다. 공개적 동맹은 아니지만 결과적으로 서로에게 유리한 행동을 반복하는 상태인 것이다. 민주당은 굳이 보수를 공격할 필요조차 없다. 장동혁이 스스로 보수 내부의 분열과 혼선을 확대해주고 있기 때문이다.
결정적 장면은 장동혁의 “승리 자체가 목적은 아니다”라는 발언이었다. 선거전을 앞둔 당대표가 승리가 목적이라고 말하지 못한다면, 대체 무엇을 위해 선거를 치르는가. 마치 축구 감독이 “공을 넣는 게 목적은 아니다”라고 말하는 격이다. 물론 가치와 명분도 중요하다. 하지만 선거전의 목표는 승리다.
정청래의 “야당 복이 있다”는 말이 더 잔인하게 들린다. 김어준의 “잘 버텨주길 바란다”는 말도 마찬가지다. 적장이 오래 버텨주길 바란다는 건, 그 적장이 계속 그 자리에 있어야 자기들에게 가장 유리하다는 뜻이다. 이게 정상일까?
이른바 ‘정치9단’으로 불리는 박지원의 발언은 더욱 의미심장하다. 그는 한동훈이 당선(국회의원 보궐선거)되면 민주당이 힘들어진다며 “무조건 막아야 한다”고 했다. 아마 진심일 것이다. 그는 정치공학에 도가 튼 인물이다. 냉정하게 말해 박민식은 종속변수다. 그가 낙선하건 말건 국민의힘이 근본적으로 달라질 건 별로 없다. 하정우도 마찬가지다. 그의 당락이 가져올 변화가 크지 않다.
하지만 한동훈은 다르다는 게 박지원의 지적인 것이다. 그의 당선 여부는 부산 북갑 한 지역구의 승패를 넘어, 한국의 '보수재건' 문제와 연결되고 심지어 민주당의 전략에도 직접적 영향을 미친다. 그래서 모든 언론이 부산 북갑을 주목하고 있는 것이다. 이 선거가 향후 정치지형의 변곡점이 될 가능성이 크기 때문이다.
정치적 호불호를 떠나서 말할 필요가 있다. 한동훈이 국회에 들어간다는 건, 기득권 정치에 익숙한 여의도 한복판에 호랑이 한 마리가 투입되는 것과 비슷하다. 적대적 공생관계에 길들여진 거대 양당 정치인들 입장에서는 불편할 수밖에 없다. 늘 하던 방식으로 싸우고, 늘 하던 방식으로 공생하는 구조를 흔들 가능성이 있기 때문이다.
그렇기에 역설적이게도 민주당 강경파와 국힘 당권파의 이해관계가 일치하는 것이다. 정치의 변화가 싫다는 점에서다. 서로 열심히 싸우는 척하지만, 판 자체를 바꾸는 변수는 함께 경계하고 같이 저지하는 것이다. 이것이야말로 진짜 ‘묵시적 협력’이다.
상대가 누구를 가장 두려워하는지를 보면 답이 나온다. 지금 민주당이 가장 경계하는 인물이 누구인가. 또 누가 민주당으로부터 “전략자산”이라는 조롱 섞인 칭찬을 듣고 있는가. 이 두 질문의 답을 나란히 놓고 보면, 부산 북갑 선거의 본질이 보인다. yslee1992@hotmail.com

However, politics is not like that. The Democratic Party doesn’t even need to go out of its way to attack the conservatives. It is necessary to speak regardless of political likes or dislikes. Han Dong-hoon entering the National Assembly is akin to a tiger being introduced into the heart of Yeouido, where vested-interest politics are accustomed. It is bound to be uncomfortable for politicians of the two major parties, who are accustomed to a hostile symbiotic relationship. This is because there is a possibility that it could shake the structure of fighting and coexisting in the usual ways.
That is why, paradoxically, the interests of the Democratic Party's hardliners and the People Power Party's leadership faction align. It stems from a dislike for political change. While they pretend to fight fiercely against each other, they are actually jointly wary of and block any variables that could alter the very landscape. The answer lies in observing who the opponent fears the most. Who is the figure the Democratic Party is currently most wary of?
