정점식 위원장, “건전 재정이 왜 긴축인가? 대통령의 흑백논리 우려”

곽규택 공보단장 “피해자의 기억은 조작할 수 없다… 정원오, 결단 내려야”

In a statement, the committee noted, “According to media reports, court rulings, and the minutes of the Yangcheon District Council at the time, this incident was not an ideological dispute, but a case of drunken violence stemming from a ‘demand for a female employee to stay out overnight’ at an entertainment establishment.” The committee argues that the true nature of the incident is that Candidate Jeong, after drinking, made unreasonable demands; when refused, he harassed the establishment owner and citizens, and even assaulted the responding police officers.
In particular, the committee presented the victim’s voice recording, released by Assemblyman Joo Jin-woo the previous day, as decisive evidence. In the recording, the victim testified, “I have absolutely no recollection of arguing about the May 18 Uprising,” and expressed that his self-esteem was severely damaged by the assault. The committee criticized Candidate Jeong, stating, “Despite the victim’s vivid voice being heard, Candidate Jeong is dismissing this as a ‘political attack’ and running away.”
The committee put forward four demands directed at Candidate Jeong. The demand is to clearly clarify the following: ▲ whether the assault recorded in the Yangcheon District Council minutes actually occurred; ▲ the reason for distorting the essence of the incident into the May 18 Uprising; ▲ confirmation of the fact that a female employee was asked to stay out overnight; and ▲ an intention to apologize for the assault on the police officer. The committee emphasized that "using a symbol of the democratization movement as an indulgence to cover up one's own crimes is an act of desecrating history," and that Candidate Jeong must resign immediately if he has even a shred of conscience.
Chairman Jeong Jeom-sik: "Why is sound fiscal management considered austerity? Concerns over the President's black-and-white logic"
Joint Campaign Committee Chairman Jeong Jeom-sik stepped forward to refute President Lee Jae-myung's criticism that the opposition party's fiscal concerns were a "song of austerity," calling it a "dangerous perception that ignores the basic principles of national finance." On the 15th, Chairman Jeong criticized via social media, stating, "What is truly strange is not the opposition party offering common-sense advice, but the President's black-and-white logic of turning everything into an enemy." He further added, "The complacent perception that there is still room to borrow is ultimately the result of irresponsibility that will pass a mountain of debt onto future generations." Finally, he called for efficient fiscal management from the government, emphasizing that “true growth is possible not through indiscriminate money printing, but on a sound fiscal foundation.” Chairman Jeong urged President Lee, “Before dismissing the opposition’s earnest advice as nonsense, as a leader responsible for the nation’s treasury, you must first re-establish minimum fiscal principles.”
Kwak Kyu-taek, Head of Public Relations: “Victims’ memories cannot be fabricated… Jeong Won-oh must make a decision”
In a commentary released on the 15th, Kwak Kyu-taek, Spokesperson for the People Power Party’s Central Election Campaign Committee, pressured Democratic Party Seoul mayoral candidate Jeong Won-oh to resign regarding a past assault case, stating that the victim’s testimony completely contradicts Jeong’s explanations. Kwak assessed that the "May 18 controversy" shield put forward by Jeong had completely collapsed with a single spoken testimony from the victim.
"The perpetrator’s excuses may be elaborate, but the victim’s memory cannot be changed," Kwak said. "Although Jeong’s side has been raising their voices claiming it is smear campaigning, now that the memories of the perpetrator and the victim are colliding head-on, the public will quickly realize whose words are the truth." In particular, he characterized Jeong’s attempt to link the assault case to the democratization movement as "moral bankruptcy." He lashed out, stating, “Differences in political views cannot serve as a justifiable reason for assault, nor should the noble history of democratization become an indulgence to cover up an individual’s criminal record of drunken violence.” His point was that for Candidate Jeong to bring up historical sensitivity while the victim vividly recounts the pain from 31 years ago is tantamount to secondary victimization of the victim.
Director Kwak also held the Democratic Party accountable for the inappropriate nomination of a candidate. He demanded, “The Democratic Party must apologize to the ten million citizens for putting forward a candidate with such clear moral flaws as the candidate for Seoul Mayor.” Furthermore, he urged Candidate Jeong to resign immediately, stating, “Making the decision to take responsibility for one’s past, rather than hiding behind excuses any longer, is the least courtesy owed to the citizens of Seoul.”
Statement by Women, Youth, and Gender Equality Committees: “Jeong Won-oh, Suspected of Coercing Prostitution, Has Lost Qualification to Lead Seoul”
The People Power Party’s Central Women’s Committee, the National Assembly Gender Equality and Family Committee, and the youth group RED WING each issued statements launching a fierce offensive, focusing their attacks on Candidate Jeong Won-oh regarding allegations of “coercing prostitution and drunken violence.” They characterized Candidate Jeong’s case as a “comprehensive set of disqualifications” riddled with vulgar sexual attitudes and false explanations, going beyond mere assault. The Women’s Committee condemned the situation, stating, “The circumstances regarding the ‘demand for an overnight stay and assault on a female employee’ revealed in the Yangcheon District Council minutes are shocking,” and added, “We cannot entrust the safety of Seoul citizens and women to a candidate who resorted to violence after his attempt at prostitution was thwarted.”
The National Assembly Gender Equality and Family Committee (Chairperson Lee In-seon) also pointed out the Democratic Party’s attitude of obstructing a parliamentary-level investigation into the truth, criticizing them by saying, “The DNA of the Democratic Party, which referred to the former Mayor Park Won-soon case as a ‘person claiming to be a victim,’ remains intact.” Lee In-sun, Chairperson of the Committee on Gender Equality, along with members Seo Myeong-ok, Seo Beom-su, Lee Dal-hee, Cho Eun-hee, and Han Ji-a, held a press conference at the main building of the National Assembly following the committee meeting on this day and issued a statement saying, “Candidate Jeong hides behind his campaign camp and the spirit of May 18, refusing to answer even a single word.” In particular, the Committee on Gender Equality and Family raised suspicions of a “criminal swap.” Regarding the claim by a close aide of Candidate Jeong that “I committed the crime, but Jeong Won-oh received the punishment,” they raised suspicions of deception of the judicial system, asking, “If this is not an attempt to swap the principal offender with the accomplice, then what is it?” Additionally, the youth group RED WING criticized Candidate Jeong’s “smart mayor” image as a fabrication, stating, “A cowardly politician who disguises his own wrongdoings as the pain of the times (May 18) cannot be chosen by the youth.”

The committee called his decision a “dereliction of duty” and a “destroying of the judiciary.” Emphasizing that this ruling is a constitutional interpretation intended to maintain the KCC’s functions, the committee urged the Democratic Party to cease its political infighting. Citing a ruling by the Seoul Administrative Court, the Committee explained, “The term ‘members in attendance’ refers to those actually registered at the time of the resolution, and the adoption of a two-member system is a legitimate procedure to maintain the functions of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC).” It characterized the Democratic Party’s past behavior—refusing recommendations for KCC commissioners to force a two-member system, and then claiming that the resolution of that system was illegal—as a “political self-staged act where they create the cause themselves but shift the blame onto others.”
