포스코는 지난달 22일 해양환경공단과 ‘민간과 함께하는 무인도서 해양환경 개선을 위한 업무협약(MOU)’을 체결하고, 민관 협력을 통한 지속가능한 해양생태계 보호 체계 구축에 나섰다고 밝혔다.
이번 협약에 따라 양 기관은 무인도서 및 인근 해역 정기 정화 활동을 비롯해 민·관 합동 해양정화 캠페인, 해양환경 개선을 위한 대국민 인식 제고 활동 등을 공동 추진할 계획이다.
특히 포스코 클린오션봉사단은 이번 협약을 계기로 기존 포항·광양 사업장 중심의 활동 범위를 경상·전라권 무인도서까지 확대한다. 첫 활동으로 오는 5월 31일 ‘바다의 날’을 앞두고 포항 구만리 인근 무인도와 전남 고흥 삼도 일대에서 대규모 해양정화 활동을 펼칠 예정이다.
2009년 출범한 포스코 클린오션봉사단은 포스코 임직원 재능봉사단으로, 현재까지 2만4천여 명이 참여해 총 2,468톤의 해양쓰레기를 수거했다. 특히 다이버 자격증을 보유한 180여 명의 봉사자들이 수중 폐기물과 해적생물을 제거하며 해양 생물다양성 보전과 어업환경 개선에 기여하고 있다.
국내 유일의 해양환경 전문 공공기관인 해양환경공단은 2023년부터 무인도서 해양쓰레기 수거 사업을 추진해 왔다. 이번 협업은 공공 중심의 정화 활동을 민간 참여형 협력 모델로 확장했다는 점에서 의미가 크다는 평가다.
포스코는 해양정화 활동과 함께 바다 사막화 방지를 위한 생태복원 사업도 지속적으로 추진하고 있다. 포스코와 포항산업과학연구원(RIST)이 철강 생산공정 부산물인 철강슬래그를 활용해 개발한 인공어초 ‘트리톤(Triton)’을 통해 해조류 성장을 촉진하고 해양 생태계 복원에 힘쓰고 있다.
지난해 11월에는 해양수산부와 함께 포항 구평1리·모포리 해역에 0.5ha 규모의 바다숲을 조성했으며, 광양만 일대에는 탄소 흡수 능력이 뛰어난 블루카본 핵심 자원인 잘피림 조성 사업을 진행 중이다. 지난해 11월 잘피 1천 주를 이식한 데 이어 지난 4월 광양시 및 지역사회와 함께 장내포구 일원에 1만 주를 추가 이식했다.
아울러 포스코는 철강슬래그를 활용한 ‘바다비료’ 보급 확대를 위해 해양수산부 및 지방자치단체와 협력을 강화할 방침이다.
포스코 관계자는 “민관 협력 구조가 일회성에 그치지 않도록 제도적·기술적 협력을 더욱 강화하겠다”며 “해양환경 보호와 탄소 저감에 실질적으로 기여하는 장기적 상생 모델을 구축해 나가겠다”고 말했다.

POSCO is joining hands with the Korea Marine Environment Corporation (KOMEC) to launch full-scale cleanup activities aimed at improving the marine environment on uninhabited islands.
POSCO announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KOMEC on the 22nd of last month regarding "Improving the Marine Environment on Uninhabited Islands with the Private Sector," and has set out to establish a sustainable marine ecosystem protection system through public-private cooperation.
Under this agreement, the two organizations plan to jointly carry out regular cleanup activities on uninhabited islands and nearby waters, joint public-private marine cleanup campaigns, and public awareness campaigns to improve the marine environment.
In particular, taking advantage of this agreement, the POSCO Clean Ocean Volunteer Corps will expand its scope of activities from its existing focus on the Pohang and Gwangyang plants to include uninhabited islands in the Gyeongsang and Jeolla regions. As its first activity, the group plans to conduct a large-scale marine cleanup operation ahead of Ocean Day on May 31st in the uninhabited islands near Guman-ri, Pohang, and the Samdo area in Goheung, South Jeolla Province.
Launched in 2009, the POSCO Clean Ocean Volunteer Corps is a talent-based volunteer group comprised of POSCO employees; to date, over 24,000 individuals have participated, collecting a total of 2,468 tons of marine debris. In particular, approximately 180 volunteers holding diving certifications are contributing to the conservation of marine biodiversity and the improvement of the fishing environment by removing underwater waste and predatory marine life.
The Korea Marine Environment Corporation, the nation's only public institution specializing in marine environments, has been carrying out a marine debris collection project on uninhabited islands since 2023. This collaboration is considered highly significant as it expands public-led cleanup activities into a cooperative model involving private sector participation.
Along with marine cleanup activities, POSCO is also continuously pursuing ecological restoration projects to prevent ocean desertification. POSCO and the Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST) are working to promote seaweed growth and restore marine ecosystems through "Triton," an artificial reef developed using steel slag, a byproduct of the steel production process.
Last November, in collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, they established a 0.5-hectare underwater forest in the waters off Gupyeong 1-ri and Mopo-ri in Pohang. Additionally, they are currently conducting a project to create seagrass forests in the Gwangyang Bay area, utilizing seagrass as a key blue carbon resource with excellent carbon absorption capabilities. Following the transplantation of 1,000 seagrass plants last November, an additional 10,000 plants were transplanted in the Jangnae Port area this past April in partnership with Gwangyang City and the local community.
Furthermore, POSCO plans to strengthen cooperation with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and local governments to expand the distribution of "sea fertilizers" utilizing steel slag. A POSCO official stated, “We will further strengthen institutional and technical cooperation to ensure that the public-private partnership structure does not remain a one-off event,” adding, “We will build a long-term win-win model that makes a substantial contribution to marine environmental protection and carbon reduction.”
