Genius Leonardo da Vinci... Realizing "Humans Read, Therefore Exist"

[Interesting Book Stories] Countless Stories, Including the Mona Lisa's Mysterious Smile: 'The Artist's Challenge'

- Ha Bong-gyu, Professor Emeritus, Pukyong National University

It can be said that the beginning of modern history was initiated by a figure of Italian origin. He was eccentric with a personality that did not fit in with others; he even wrote with his left hand and remained a bachelor his entire life. Although he was abandoned by his city and country, he spent the rest of his life there at the invitation of the King of a neighboring country (France). He was a great artist (painter), scientist, and philosopher.

His name is Leonardo da Vinci, and recently, Italy's largest defense company adopted his name for its corporate name. His greatest work (the Mona Lisa) is housed in the Louvre, while his scientific notes are held in the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum (New York).

Books that trace Leonardo da Vinci's legacy can be summarized as *The Story of Art* (Gombrich), *The Intellectual Tradition of the West* (co-authored by Bronowski and Maslish), and *Primary Sources of Knowledge* (John Carey). In particular, the history of philosophy (*Intellectual Tradition*) and the history of science (*Primary Sources of Knowledge*) even explicitly list subtitles such as "From Da Vinci to Hegel" and "From Da Vinci to Feynman," respectively.

Da Vinci, illuminated by Gombrich, is said to have personally dissected over 20 corpses, claiming to be an anatomist for the sake of great art. His aim was to understand muscles and bones through the dissection of the human body. The mysterious smile of the Mona Lisa was the crystallization of an artistic spirit that sought to grasp the invisible beyond the visible, alongside countless stories and artistic challenges.

The numerous scientific notes left by Da Vinci serve as living proof of the natural philosophy emphasized by Bacon. Because the conveniences of modern civilization, such as airplanes and submarines, were presented in these notes, they eventually came to be realized through engines and new materials.

Leonardo da Vinci is recognized as the progenitor of modern philosophy because he re-imported ancient philosophy—specifically Hellenism—via Islam. However, philosophy, represented by Aristotle, was simultaneously a science and had to be replaced by modern science. His *Encyclopedia*, which claimed to be a follower of Bacon, served as a cornerstone in this context.

Ultimately, Da Vinci was both an elite and a social outlier, choosing to become an outsider. He laid the foundation in his master's studio, achieved innovation in the dissection room, learned ancient science and philosophy through Islam, and ultimately embarked on the path of a challenger through his scientific notes. For him, the challenge toward beauty and value extended beyond art to encompass science and philosophy.

Paradoxically, the Italian Renaissance initiated by Da Vinci was ruined by two Germans (Gutenberg, who invented printing, and Martin Luther, who led the Reformation), and the movement soon spread to the Netherlands and England.

Da Vinci's story also serves as a symbol for social scientists. Due to the nature of social science, perfect explanations are impossible within specific fields. This is because society itself is complex and multifaceted. Above all, without a foundation in the humanities—represented by history, philosophy, and literature—the limitations are clear.

The decline of Korea today can be attributed to a poverty of the humanities, particularly in the social sciences. Since reading is completely excluded from the Korean education curriculum, it is extremely difficult to find scientists equipped with a foundation in the humanities. Furthermore, the disappearance of proper leadership figures from all walks of life is also fatal.

Looking at Da Vinci, one realizes that "humans are reading animals," that they "must know themselves (through books)," and that "they read, therefore they exist."
