Running the Goodwill Women’s Club has made me realize

that volunteer work is much harder to sustain than one might think.

Each person has different circumstances and perspectives.

This time, our bazaar schedule had to be changed due to the Maltese government election.

The venue, originally booked for the 23rd, is a home care center,

and early voting was scheduled there. Although the main voting day is on the 30th,

we had no choice but to move the bazaar forward to the 16th.

After that, the real work began. Many people already knew the event as being

on the 23rd, so I had to visit shops and schools one by one to explain the change.

I also had to correct every poster,

even covering the original date with tape and replacing it with the 16th.

This process required far more time and effort than expected.

While it may seem easy to communicate through the internet or email,

many places such as language schools

and shops require in-person visits. In the end, I had to handle most of it alone.

The sudden change felt completely unexpected.

Everything we had prepared was disrupted at once,

and I had to start moving again accordingly.

Some people take volunteering lightly or see it only as something honorable.

But in reality, it is repetitive work that comes with real responsibility.

I find myself asking what volunteering truly means.

It takes both time and money, yet some people think it is a position of status

or that there must be some benefit. In my case,

there is not even a single cent of profit. On the contrary,

it costs me money, which makes the situation feel even more absurd at times.

In the beginning, two Japanese members believed that volunteer work should be paid.

A Chinese lady participant appeared briefly

with the intention of doing business and then disappeared.

When someone brought a friend, they often left together soon after.

One Canadian elderly woman insisted strongly on doing things her own way.

Over the past two years, many people have come and gone.

Only now do I fully realize how much time and effort volunteering requires.

Still, I feel responsible for what I started, so today again,

I am out alone putting up posters for the bazaar.
