민주주의의 본질은 권력의 점유가 아니라 분점과 상호 견제에 있다. 승자독식의 양당 정치 구조 속에서 야당은 단순한 반대자가 아니다. 국정 운영의 독주를 막고 민주적 정당성을 완성하는 핵심적인 ‘제어 장치’다. 그러나 지금의 대한민국 정치는 거대 여당의 일방적인 독주와 그 앞에서 무기력하게 침몰한 야당의 모습만 남았다.
선거의 승리는 국정 운영의 권한을 위임받은 것이지, 반대 세력을 배제할 전권을 부여받은 것이 아니다. 하지만 거대 여당은 압도적인 의석수를 앞세워 입법과 정책 결정 과정에서 마땅히 거쳐야 할 협치와 토론을 생략하고 있다. 견제받지 않는 권력은 필연적으로 자신들만의 정의에 매몰되는 ‘독선’에 빠지기 마련이다.
이러한 일방 독주는 국민 전체가 아닌 특정 진영만을 위한 정치로 귀결된다. 이는 곧 현대적 의미의 ‘연성 독재’로 진입하는 위험한 신호탄이다. 야당의 무기력 또한 심각하다. 현재 야당의 한계는 단순한 의석수 부족이 아니라 ‘전략과 비전의 부재’에 있다. 여당의 실책을 비난하는 데만 매몰되어 국민이 신뢰할 수 있는 실무적 대안을 제시하지 못하고 있다. 건강한 비판이 사라진 자리는 비효율적인 행정과 권력 오남용이 채우게 된다.
이제는 거대 양당 정치 체제의 구조적 한계를 냉정하게 직시해야 한다. 서로를 ‘절대 악’으로 규정하며 상대의 실패를 자양분 삼아 연명하는 양당 체제는 현대 사회의 복잡다단한 갈등을 해결하기보다 오히려 증폭시킨다. 흑백논리로 무장한 두 거대 정당 사이에서 민생을 위한 실용적인 타협안은 설 자리를 잃었다.

The void left by the absence of healthy criticism is being filled by inefficient administration and the abuse of power.
We must now coolly face the structural limitations of the two-party political system. A two-party system that defines each other as "absolute evil" and survives by feeding on the other's failures amplifies, rather than resolves, the complex and multifaceted conflicts of modern society. And those alternatives begin with the revitalization of a multi-party system that dismantles the solid fortress of vested interests of the two major parties.
What is urgently needed in our politics today is not merely the revival of the opposition party, but the restoration of a political ecosystem capable of representing the diverse voices of the people. Only when diverse political parties check and monitor power can democracy finally resist the temptation of self-righteousness and advance toward its true path toward the people.
I look forward to ending the hostile symbiosis of the two major parties and seeing multi-party democracy flourish. Ultimately, it is the wise judgment and determination of the people that decide the future of the nation. Without the normalization of party politics, there is no future for the country.
