석유 수출 제한, 금융 거래 제한, 달러 결제 제한으로 사실상 ground out(sky diver가 결격 사유가 크면 비행장에서 쫒아냄)시켰다.

Since the situation is bound to draw criticism from either the U.S. or Iran anyway, I hope they dispatch an oil tanker escort fleet...

-= Writer Lee Rae-kwon

Amidst daily shifts in statements between the U.S. and Iran, a weighty resolution has been announced. The U.S. has changed its slogan, ending "Operation Grand Fury" and transitioning to "Operation Liberation." Iranian hardliner and de facto leader Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Parliament, once again shouted to both domestic and international audiences a will for desperate resistance reminiscent of the Japanese Emperor at the end of World War II, declaring, "The U.S. may not be able to wait, but we haven't even started."

One can discern the dual strategic objectives of Trump: to prevent defeat caused by high inflation and prices ahead of the November election resulting from large-scale destruction and war of slaughter, and to avoid criticism from the international community. The problem is that the so-called "Operation Liberation of the Hormuz Strait," a form of soft warfare, is in reality an economic starvation operation aimed at blocking ships bound for Iran, making a prolonged conflict inevitable. The strategy is to drive the entire Iranian population to starvation rather than simply beating them to death, thereby triggering a popular revolution or coup to induce a regime change and collapse. While young people are likely to survive until the end by starving or stealing, the cruel intention is to isolate and force Iran to surrender by turning it into a second Auschwitz, causing mass starvation among the sick, children, and the elderly.

Humanitarian food aid from Russia and coastal nations via the Caspian Sea, along with humanitarian supplies from neighboring Iraq, Turkey, and Pakistan, will essentially be providing Iran with an IV drip. The U.S. strategic shift to starve Iran to death by blocking the food, daily necessities, and medicine it needs will be difficult to achieve even after this winter.

This unfolding situation is like a broken amusement park that overlooked the fact that oil prices are skyrocketing as the supply of Middle Eastern crude oil is cut off or drastically reduced due to prolonged Iranian attacks. It will unleash the disappointment and tears of the children (oil-importing nations) riding the roller coaster everywhere.

If Iran hands over its nuclear materials, it will, in the long run, be reduced to a soft target that the U.S. strikes from time to time. The U.S. has become an energy export powerhouse through shale gas and oil. If Iran abandons its nuclear program, it is only a matter of time before its iron-fisted theocratic rule collapses due to democratization movements infiltrating by foreign powers. Iran is a resource-rich nation with the world's third or fourth-largest reserves of oil and gas. By selling these resources, it has maintained its hegemony by providing stable and massive funds to Shia forces in the Middle East—and to anti-Israel and anti-Western factions—much like the U.S. This war is a life-or-death battle for Iran, as it will result in either losing or maintaining all of this. It is a matter of mutual interests where war is unlikely to end even if it snows.

We were watching the fight, only to be branded as part of a gang and unjustly accused of mob violence when the engine room of an HMM ship was bombed the other day. Whether we strike once or a hundred times, having already been driven into a gang of lynchings by Iran, we must make a decision. The government urgently needs to make a decision regarding whether to secure maritime shipping routes together with the United States or to neglect the issue and allow oil tankers and container ships to once again be bombed by Iran. In my personal opinion, given that we have a Trump who is both favorable and fickle, and lack our own transportation capabilities, it is right for us to be in the same boat. Just as the Joseon Tongsinsa was dispatched to Kyoto following Tokugawa Ieyasu’s policy of friendship with Japan after the Imjin War, we should simply send an apology delegation after the US-Iran conflict ends. It is better than sitting idly by and being criticized by both sides. The lesser of two evils is better.

Oil is both the greatest gift and disaster discovered by humanity. Japan, which initiated the Pacific War, was defeated due to the oil export ban on Japan led by the United States and Great Britain. In desperation, Japan occupied Southeast Asian oil regions such as Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and the Malay Peninsula, but due to a lack of refining and transportation technology, it restricted the activities of military aircraft and warships. Ultimately, Japan cut down all the pine trees in Asia. Pine resin was requisitioned and sent to the front lines, but due to the woefully insufficient quality and quantity, the Japanese collapsed under the U.S. military's overwhelming supply offensive. The Emperor ordered Kamikaze attacks and a nationwide suicide, but after the atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima instantly killed over 300,000 people and caused many times that number of casualties, he declared surrender via radio. Samurai committed seppuku, and the cries of kneeling Japanese people shook the heavens and the earth in every street.

The first oil-producing nations lacked the technology and capital, so they operated as joint ventures with the West, sharing equity. Since Khomeini seized power following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Iran has nationalized oil—a gift from Muhammad—and the previous left-wing government nationalized oil facilities. More than 40% of the revenue generated from this went into the pockets of the Revolutionary Guard and the relatives of the theocratic leaders. Judging that money alone was insufficient to maintain a dictatorship that had sold out its eternal god, the Iranian theocratic leadership eventually... With less than three months remaining to complete its decades-long nuclear development, Iran suffered a carpet bombing by Israel and the U.S., severing its economic nerves. Although the Iranian leadership is said to have been torn apart by the war's predictable outcome, Iran will not kneel until it eliminates, through ground war, the leadership succession system that controls nationalized oil fields and finance, the religious beliefs of those who appoint them, and the 150,000 Revolutionary Guards who defend them to the death. Even after a victory, it is impossible for the descendants of Muhammad—who hold the supremacist view of pure blood and remember the glory of Persia among over 90 million Iranians—to transform their 1,600-year national identity into Christian Western civilization overnight. Even if the grandson of the Pahlavi family in the U.S. were brought in and installed as leader, the anger stemming from wounded pride would quickly vanish through terror attacks. Even if he were to die, there would be no great-grandsons or great-great-grandsons to act as his successors; even if such a successor existed, their ability to unite and persuade the 90 million Iranians, who live by the Quran as their daily religion, is no different from that of a baby in a bottle, making the installation of a U.S. dynasty impossible. The solution lies in guiding them toward long-term reform and openness through a combination of striking and cajoling. The best course of action is to shift Iran's direction of development from a theocracy to democracy by dividing its society.

For non-oil-producing nations, the nationalization of Iran's oil—the "big pie" of humanity—and its subsequent fall into the hands of Mustafa and his hounds is both a source of envy and a fear of oil price volatility. Although a Shia minority in neighboring Pakistan follows Iran, the majority is Sunni (mixed-race Muslim), so they have treated them like exiled cousins. Due to poverty traded for nuclear weapons, Pakistan has been living for decades with faces covered in coal ash, tearing up the world's tires and stuffing them into imported steel chambers to use miscellaneous oils like bunker fuel for industry and heating. Despite various diseases and starvation becoming their daily lives, Iran heartlessly turned a blind eye to the suffering of its brothers.

The West argues that a minority group, having turned its back on Muhammad's mercy through discrimination, neglect, abandonment, murder, and public executions under the guise of a theocracy, has inflicted evil upon 90 million people and the global economy through resource nationalism, dictatorship, and terror. They criticize in unison, either to the front or behind one's back.

Originally, Muslims were benevolent merchants who spread Eastern and Western civilizations to one another. On land, they were messengers who traded human goods by creating the Silk Road; on the sea, they were the primary contributors who enriched the flavors of potatoes and meat—staples of Westerners—by sailing ships to transport spices from Southeast Asia.

Disaster struck the East and West, who had been exchanging gifts along this Silk Road. Genghis Khan of the East launched wars of conquest as far as Finland with 300,000 cavalry, becoming the greatest mass murderer in human history. The West then retaliated. To obtain spices, which were more valuable than gold, Northern European maritime nations began conquering Southeast Asia, subjecting it to oppression, persecution, and exploitation until World War II.

Now, as the era of mass production and industry continues to increase speed, production volume, and quality day by day, the most critical element—oil and gas—needed to power motors and engines, stands at the forefront. Even ships carrying thousands of containers in the age of trade must run their engines using oil. Spaceships, missiles, and airplanes used for travel would be impossible without oil. It is merely junk. Even if you go to the market to pick out a few fruits to take home, you have to carry them on a back carrier without a plastic bag. There is no way to know why God chose to bury this precious oil specifically in the Muslim regions of the Middle East, which amplifies the doctrines of God's absence and atheism.

The reason why Imperial Japan launched the Pacific War through an oil embargo, why Venezuela's Maduro was captured by the U.S. military as a dictator and forced to stand trial in New York and The Hague, and why Khamenei was targeted for assassination and his son Mustafa was severely injured and forced to hide underground to escape U.S. decapitation bombings, is solely due to oil. When resources are weaponized through monopolies and nationalization, the United States—the largest oil producer and consumer—suffers a severe blow, leading to a regime change. On the surface, it is a simple demand to abandon nuclear weapons development and hand over 440 kg of 50% enriched uranium; however, as a citizen of a non-nuclear state, it is difficult to understand why they chose the "mole underground"—a desperate fight to the death to complete their nuclear program—that they are about to die.

Iran began developing medical nuclear materials in the 1950s. In the 2000s, the UN, the US, and the EU jointly resolved to impose sanctions. They faced measures such as the blocking of financial networks, restrictions on oil exports, and the freezing of overseas assets. With the signing of the nuclear agreement in 2015, they secured the lifting of some sanctions. The person who broke all these conflict resolutions was Trump. He withdrew from this agreement in 2018 and reinstated severe sanctions. By restricting oil exports, financial transactions, and dollar payments, they were effectively grounded out (similar to how a "sky diver" is expelled from an airport if they have significant grounds for disqualification). If they are deemed a threat to their peers despite their past efforts, the measure amounts to expulsion and forced return. Iran is now facing a situation where everything they prepared and practiced is being wiped clean, resulting in a cold expulsion from the global trade order and a ban on return.

Why did Iran, which could have simply sold oil and lived comfortably, choose to place its national capabilities at the forefront of everything and invest all its resources in nuclear development? Perhaps if they were to hold out without nuclear weapons and become the target of a war by the US military seeking pretexts—like in Afghanistan or Iraq—the Revolutionary Guard under Khamenei would turn into a paper tiger in the winter. The reason was likely an intuitive collective fear that they were destined to be thrown into a stove. In particular, the massacre of an estimated tens of thousands of resisting citizens under Khamenei’s new political system following Khomeini—framing simple demands for livelihood as criticism of the regime and subversion—constitutes a crime against humanity. The lesson from Hussein—that he is not the only leader to be dragged out of a tunnel, have a noose around his neck, and be thrown to his death by a judge appointed by the U.S. military—must have made them wet their pants. Conventional forces, already destroyed, cannot stop this. They have fallen into a collective delusion that if they can only extract the 440 kg of 50% uranium buried under the piles of rocks, Iran will become a nuclear power—a "sword of mutual suicide" that no one can touch—allowing the current hardline leadership to rule indefinitely.

The United States, having embarked on a strategy of starvation, is attempting to incite chaos and demonstrations in Iran to establish a moderate government through a civil revolution; however, this will inevitably require a tremendous amount of time and various tactical shifts. Dropping tactical nuclear weapons, which I argued for in my previous column, could also be an option for the U.S. Mass destruction is not an issue, but if accompanied by mass slaughter, Trump will also be reduced to a criminal against humanity. The plan is to block Iran's front door until the rich man's stomach is so full of peanuts that he begs for water, and oil-importing nations are suffering agonizing hardships.

It looks that anchovies and salted shrimp will be missing from this winter's kimchi-making. At Tongyeong Port in the South Sea, anchovy fishing boats are unable to set sail, and crew members are sitting in the harbor chain-smoking, pouring pointless soju into their sundae soup.

Factories, seas, fields, cargo trucks, and airplanes are all facing situations where crew members are resting due to fuel surcharges, or low-cost carriers have suspended operations entirely. There is no place in the world that has not been hit by the fragments of the Iran-U.S. war. They might hold out for a few months, but Iranian hardliners will never give up their nuclear weapons. In other words, there is a high probability that the war and negotiations will drag on into the next year. Huge mutual disagreements lie dormant between the demands to hand over the nuclear weapons and the refusal to do so. The moment the Iranian leadership gives up their nuclear weapons, the United States will proceed sequentially with its strategy to transplant democracy into Iran, even if it means launching another ground invasion.

For Iran, possessing nuclear weapons is a permanent deterrent—a sharp knife held to the carotid artery that can instantly neutralize the U.S.'s annual defense budget of $900 billion and its fleet of 11 aircraft carriers. It is an equivalent deterrent of "an eye for an eye," a suicidal "mutual destruction" where detonation leads to mutual annihilation. Iran will never let go of this.

The war is becoming prolonged, Europe is wary of Trump's "freedom of navigation," and our government, burdened by the North Korean nuclear issue, is merely agonizing over the situation. While it is unlikely that the 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea will be withdrawn, one must acknowledge that Trump is the President representing the United States and holds the authority to decide on immediate nuclear umbrella provision and retaliation in the event of a crisis. Furthermore, if oil tankers, which should be arriving at a rate of a couple daily, are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz for years, it would be a fatal blow to our economy. I understand that he is pursuing a moderate policy for the sake of peaceful coexistence with North Korea. The problem is that if oil—the primary contributor enabling the era of 1 trillion won in exports—is scarce, a decline in economic growth rates and a downturn across all industrial sectors seem inevitable.

Taking the lead by sending even destroyers and submarines would also be of great help in enhancing national prestige and exercising influence. We simply need to play a role by thoroughly erecting walls on both sides of the oil tankers to block Iranian jet ski-class attack vessels with all the so-called superior missiles, and intercepting and shooting down any remaining missiles in the air.

I do not know if the engine room of our merchant ship is that of the Iranian Navy or a missile, but this is akin to performing sophisticated surgery only on the brain of a giant elephant. If oil tankers carrying one to two million barrels were to launch a surgical attack a couple of times a day—intelligently targeting our navigation systems, compasses, and eyes—it would be a devastating blow and a helpless lament for the clamoring domestic oil consumers.

If the government, which is responsible for protecting the property and lives of its citizens, hesitates on participating in "freedom of navigation" operations with the distant future improvement of relations with Iran in mind, it constitutes a dereliction of duty. This would deal a serious blow to our past policy toward Iran and act as a source of future instability. In any case, we cannot resolve a conflict between the U.S. and Iran alone. If Japan and Europe participate, Iran will become an outcast due to international pressure. While Russia, India, and China will likely stand by, the long-awaited revival of pro-Western alliances increases the likelihood that strong pressure will strengthen the position of moderates within Iran. By shifting from the hardliners' wait-and-see stance to supporting moderates, we can once again stand as a friendly nation in the event of a future regime change in Iran.

There is a saying, "too little, too late." A winner will surely emerge between Iran and the United States. The Iranian nuclear issue could be postponed, and negotiations could take a sudden turn. The severity of the problem lies in the fact that everything is being delayed. Due to the imminent closure of the Strait of Hormuz, nations around the world are suffering from high oil prices and shortages of raw materials. This is not a situation where we can simply sit back and wait. We cannot avoid being blacklisted by Iran by trying to get involved later. Rather than being concerned with Trump’s freedom of navigation, the government must expedite a decision in the face of the economic crisis, rather than relying on diplomatic approaches such as saving face or formalities, given that production sites are coming to a complete shutdown the moment we wake up. Our ship was attacked, and a bomb struck the engine room where the crew was concentrated, narrowly avoiding mass casualties. Immediately dispatch warships to the Strait of Hormuz as part of naval live-defense training and to protect and escort oil tankers, which are the nation's lifeline.

If we act too quickly, we will be criticized by Iran; if we act too late, we will be held accountable by Trump. If we pander to both sides, we end up being criticized by both. With the national economy falling into a critical state in many places, why should we fear the temporary criticism we might face from Iran and the United States? I advise both the ruling and opposition parties—conservatives and progressives alike—to disregard the influence of the election and to trust the people, who will applaud from all sides, to promptly dispatch warships to escort oil tankers to the Strait of Hormuz. We are in an extraordinary situation where heads of households are wandering the streets in groups due to a lack of oil. samsohun@naver.com
