필자는 시골-농촌(전남 담양군 수북면)에서 태어나 자랐습니다.
그런데 필자 마을에는 필자의 중-고등학교 시절까지, 전기가 들어오지 않았습니다. 밤이 되면, 어두움 그 자체였습니다. 전기(電氣)가 들어오는 곳은 밝은 곳이라는 의미가 있습니다.
요즘 서울은 그 어디를 가나, 뒷골목까지 가로등이 환하게 켜져 있습니다.

전기 소모량이 많은 국가들 순위를 챙겨보았습니다. 세계에서 총 전기 소모량이 가장 많은 국가 순위를 보았습니다. 미국 에너지정보청(EIA)의 데이터를 기반으로 한 가장 최신 공식 집계 순위를 보니 -1위 중국 : 연간 약 8,539 TWh (테라와트시) -2위 미국 : 연간 약 4,128 TWh -3위 인도 : 연간 약 1,462 TWh -4위 러시아 : 연간 약 1,025 TWh -5위 일본 : 연간 약 939 TWh-6위 대한민국 : 연간 약 586 TWh이었습니다.
