Mokpo National University Lifelong Education Center ‘Smartphone Photography Art’ 1st Class Exhibition

Instructed by World-renowned Smartphone Photographer Hong Deok-hee

Mokpo National University Lifelong Education Center will hold the exhibition for the 1st class of the ‘Smartphone Photography Art’ on May 7. Under the guidance of world-renowned smartphone photographer Hong Deok-hee, participants ranging from seniors in their 80s to retirees will showcase their ‘masterpieces of a lifetime.’

In a press release, the Mokpo National University Lifelong Education Center stated, “The ‘Smartphone Photography Art’ course is garnering attention as a new model of public art education that transforms the lives of citizens. This exhibition features works by students of the ‘1st Smartphone Photography Art’ class, conducted under the guidance of world-class smartphone photographer Hong Deok-hee, and is the fruit of a project to foster citizen artists who practice the ‘democratization of art.’ By presenting the possibility that any citizen can become an artist through the everyday tool of the smartphone, the exhibition embodies the meaning of a public art movement that expands art from being the exclusive property of a specific class into everyone’s lives.”

He continued, “This course was a journey that went beyond simply acquiring photography skills to awakening a sense of looking at one’s own life in a new light. Behind the exhibited works lie the dramatic transformations of the students. From the student who shyly submitted a shadow photo instead of their face because they felt burdened by the selfie assignment during the first class, to the student who brought in a picture of a neighborhood stream for homework saying, ‘There is nothing special to photograph,’ to those who filled the emptiness of retirement with photography, to the student who mustered the courage to find new connections in an unfamiliar area, and even the oldest student in their 80s who hesitated to even present. Through photography, they began to rediscover their daily lives.” He emphasized, “Now, the students have been reborn as ‘citizen artists’ who confidently share their own stories while explaining their creative perspectives in front of their works. The students unanimously say, ‘I look forward to class every week,’ and ‘This serious hobby, the first of its kind in my life, has become a source of vitality.’” In a statement released by the Lifelong Education Center of Mokpo National University, it was revealed that “this class went beyond a simple lecture to become a venue for an open community where participants shared their perspectives and found comfort. Students formed a sense of empathy by listening attentively to the stories within each other’s photographs, which led to the positive function of public art in strengthening the bonds of the local community. At the exhibition venue, not only will the individual artistic worlds constructed by the students themselves through their selection and interpretation of photographs be showcased, but a special video documenting their evolutionary process will also be screened to add to the emotional impact.” The statement further noted, “Artist Hong Deok-hee stated, ‘Art is not just for the privileged, but a sensation that blossoms within the lives of all citizens,’ adding that ‘this exhibition proves that anyone can sublimate their lives into art through the most universal tool: the smartphone.’”
